Yes We Can In 1795, the French military offered a 12,000 franc prize for a new method to preserve food. Not until 1810 did confectioner Nicolas Appert’s method of placing food in glass jars, sealing them with cork and wax and placing them in boiling water win him both the prize and the title “Father of Canning.” As a publicity stunt, Appert once preserved an entire sheep. Also, in 1810, British inventor Peter Durand patented the tin can, but because it required hammer and chisel to open, it remained unpopular for the nearly half century it took for another Englishman, Robert Yeates, to invent the can opener. Jill Mitchell is not a direct descendant of either Appert or Durand. Sharon Feinblatt likely never heard of Yeates. But they both love canning and want to provide you an intro to the art of preservation. Pickles, antipasti, and jams can all be simply, safely, and elegantly canned in a single afternoon. The events includes light snacks and samples of Jill and Sharon’s amazing goods, as well as the cooking and processing of 3 recipes with 3 jars to take home. Spring Fling Family Party As spring blooms, so do friendships. Join preschool parents Larry and Kelly Lewis and David and Tiffany Goldwyn as they host a fun-filled event for young families on April 7th, from12:30-3:30 pm at the Lewis home.
