FAQs for Students and Parents
★ What are class schedules like at Bunker Hill?
Bunker Hill operates on a traditional 4-Block Schedule as a high school. This means that students will have four (4) traditional classes each day that are no less than 90 minutes in length. The third period class may be longer than 90 minutes to accommodate the lunch schedule for students. Students are expected to arrive in class prior to the bell ringing and be ready for instruction. Students have approximately five (5) minutes for class changes with the exception of a 10 minute period between 1st and 2nd periods. Five minutes is more than adequate as long as students do not spend too much time socializing or wasting time going from one location on the campus to another. School begins each day at 8:05 am and ends at 3:15 pm.
★ What are students expected to bring on the first day of school? On the first day of school every student will get a syllabus for their classes. Various syllabi will provide guidance to students and parents on the items and materials that will be needed in each class. Students should bring paper and/or a notebook, pens/pencils, or folder to keep up with information and handouts. Students will be expected to take notes, collect information, and show up prepared to begin school for success. We will begin the first day by showing a video that discusses school expectations and procedures. This information can be found on the school website for easy access for students and parents.
★ What is GPA and why is it important? GPA stands for Grade Point Average and is a number representing the average value of the accumulated final grades earned in courses over time. A student's grade point average is calculated by adding up all accumulated final grades and dividing that figure by the number of grades awarded. The most common form of GPA is based on a 0 to 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, and F = 0), with a 4.0 representing a “perfect” GPA—or a student having earned straight As in every course. In some schools, weighted-grade systems are used in GPA calculations, and they give students a numerical advantage for grades earned in higher-level courses, such as honors courses or Advanced Placement courses, or for completing more challenging learning experiences. A student’s GPA is often used to determine academic honors, such as honor roll, class rank, or Latin honors. GPAs have been one of several major factors
used by colleges, postsecondary programs, and employers to assess a student’s overall academic record.
