St. Athanasius Parish Outreach Saint Athanasius Parish Linens Drive for Mission of Deeds
We are expanding our outreach efforts so that we may better assist those in our community who may need a helping hand in a variety of ways. We are looking for volunteers who would be willing to assist in the following ways:
Hem your blessings with thankfulness so they don’t unravel!
♦ ♦ ♦
Drive parishioners to church Prepare meals Visit parishioners who may be unable to attend church ♦ Bake desserts for the Sawtelle Hospice House
Mission of Deeds is so blessed by the extraordinary generosity of the parishioners at the recent linens drive. Many, many needy individuals and families will benefit greatly from this wonderful spirit of giving. Mission of Deeds received so many much needed items such as blankets, bedspreads, twin sheets, towels and the list goes on.
Please let us know if you can provide any of these important services. If you are already on the Hospice House dessert list, you do not need to volunteer for that effort again since we already have your contact information. Please contact Ellen Terry at
[email protected] or 781-944-5431 to volunteer for any of these programs. THANK YOU!
We would love to have you stop by anytime for a tour and see your generosity in action. We are open Monday- Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
On this past Saturday many volunteers helped sort bottles and cans for the CAB drive. It is a great way to get community service hours, help the parish, and make new friends!!
God bless you, Bruce Murison

F ROM THE PASTOR
Cremation This week’s entry is from an edited Pilot article by Father Kenneth Doyle)
I receive many letters and questions that reflect people's continuing fascination with the disposition of bodily remains. That interest was heightened in October 2016 when the Vatican issued an instruction regarding burial practices for Catholics. That document was issued at the request of bishops in several nations in response to the growing practice of cremation and the lack of specific church guidelines on the disposition of cremains. The instruction reiterates that the church, while not opposed to the practice of cremation, continues to recommend a traditional burial. The document specifies that either the body or the ashes of the deceased should be buried in sacred ground and that cremains should not be kept in private homes or scattered on land or at sea, nor "preserved in mementoes, pieces of jewelry or other objects." Burial in sacred ground, said the Vatican, prevents the deceased from being forgotten and encourages family members and the wider Christian community to pray for them. As the Vatican's 2016 instruction says, "Burial is above all the most fitting way to express faith and hope in the resurrection of the body" and shows "the great dignity of the human body as an integral part of the human person, whose body forms part of their identity." Historically, cremation was linked to the burial practices of pagans, whose religious beliefs did not include the expectation of eventual resurrection and viewed death as the definitive obliteration of the human person. That same instruction does note, though, that "cremation of the deceased's body does not affect his or her soul, nor does it prevent God in his omnipotence from raising up the deceased body to new life." We don't know mechanically how the eventual reunion of body and soul will occur and leave that -- as the Vatican does -- to the wisdom of the Lord. 5
