Feminism Today: Are We Really In a Post-Feminist Era?

Vol. IV, No. 2 Photo Taken By: Diana Shprekher

DIANA SHPREKHER Why is it in today’s society that the first idea that comes along with feminism is an angry man-hater? Feminists by definition are not a bunch of angry man-hating women. Feminists are women who are seeking equality and changes to ensure such gender equality. The real question to be asked today is: are we in a post-feminist world today? Post-feminism is the idea that women have achieved the opportunities and equality that they have strived for in politics, employment, education, etc. However, that is sadly not a fact. We are in what feminists today like to call the third wave of feminism. Whereas the first wave was all about gaining the right to vote and the second wave was all about gaining education and career opportunities, the third wave is all about the breaking down of the stereotypes that are connected to the “feminist” woman. The third wave of feminism is a chance to continuing fighting for opportunities especially in politics. There is still a huge under representation of women in politics today. We have made huge progress but the statistics are still overwhelmingly against women. What is even sadder is the fact that women between the ages of 18 and 32 have the lowest representation in the voting booths as well. Today’s modern women are not as interested (save the 2008 Presidential Election) in voting. Is it because we are apathetic? No, it’s because politicians today have stopped caring about our rights and issues that we want addressed. We choose not to participate in almost a rebellion of sorts because certain people and politicians believe that we are in post-feminism and have as a result decided to ignore the issues that are so pressing to women. It is not surprising that our issues range from employment, education, sexual rights, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), etc. We are focused on these Continued on Page 5

What’s the Deal with Reality Television?

GREGORY LICO

There seems to be no end to the trash that network television executives create to crowd their channels. Broadcast cable, especially Fox has put some really awful programming up over the years. Shows like “Who wants to Marry a Millionaire,” “Man vs. Beast,” and “Skating with Celebrities” bring a whole new meaning to the word crap. Even now, reality shows still crowd the airwaves despite the fact that many of us are either bored by them or disgusted by its content. The king of trash reality TV these days is MTV. The casting directors are very good with who they put in their shows. They don’t ask average Americans like you or me to be on these programs, of good intelligence and breeding. No, instead, they go for women dressed as strippers with the IQ of a banana, young adult men with chauvinistic ideals and obsessed with asserting their manliness. It seems obvious that they do this mainly to get ratings, and who can blame them? But I think this hurts Continued on Page 8

EVERY OPINION IS RIGHT

Manhattanville’s Right World View exists for a purpose: to promote the ideals that make the United States of America the greatest country in the world. Those principles tend to be Conservative in nature. As such, the Right World View is a fierce non-partisan publication. Included among the ideals are a strong and free economy, security both domestic and abroad, and the reestablishment of values in our degrading society. We will expose hypocrisy and corruption wherever we may find it, while praising the unsung heroes that too often go overlooked. We can not, should not, must not, and will not back down. We owe it to our ideology to win. Ideas alone do not have consequences. Actions have consequences, and we will put our ideals into action. Come join the movement to make our country an even better place. Everything starts locally, but when done right can have a national, even global, effect.

Think on This:

Dear Manhattanville Students, Faculty, and Staff, Here we are with the second issue of the year. We are always happy to note that we are still going strong after four years. We strive to always bring Right World View to the Manhattanville campus no matter what. If you feel that a certain voice or issue is underrepresented by us, please feel free to write for Right World View by emailing Mville@ RightWorldView.com to better share your voices to the rest of our community. There is nothing more important than having the ability to express yourself and being on a liberal arts campus should enable all voices to be heard no matter the opinion. As always, we’re here for that open exchange of ideas. So, let’s keep exchanging our opinions and let’s keep striving to make Right World View bigger and better. So, look for our next issue in three weeks and keep looking at our issues online at Mville.RightWorldView.com. Also, join our fan page on Facebook and our Twitter page! Sincerely,

To Arms, To Arms

Your Mission: Plant a Tree, Take Public Transportation, Recycle! Do something for nature! Most people today do not realize how our environment is so heavily impacted by our everyday choices. What we don’t realize is that all the natural sources that we overuse today are not renewable and will run out. Not to mention, there is ozone depletion that we should still be worried about with the amount of gas that we release into our atmosphere. We should help Mother Nature out by going out and planting trees. And if you don’t have a garden to be as hands on, there are other ways to help our environment. You can recycle. Recycling paper, cans, bottles, etc is a great way to re-use what we have so that we don’t have to cut more trees or other resources just to get what we need. Also, if you have a car, you might want to save yourself money and save the environment and use public transportation or car pool. The less cars there are on the road, the less pollution getting into our atmosphere. To get more involved in environmental issues, you can visit the Enviromental Protection Agency’s website: http://www.epa.gov/ or join ACT on our very own campus!

Continued from Page 1 (Feminism Today: Are We Really in a Post-Feminist Era?) concerns because there is still not a stable medium of equality. Not only is there still a pressing concern in politics, education, and employment, there is always the overarching concern of being a modern feminist woman versus the traditional woman or being a hybrid of sorts. In the “good old days” as our parents and grandparents like to remind us, men were the breadwinners and women stayed at home and tended to the home and children. With the three waves of feminism, this model has dynamically changed. Now, there are hardly many stay at home mothers because in today’s market and economy, you need two incomes to sustain a typical middle class or lower class family. However, there is a negative to the empowered workingwoman ideal. It’s worse trying to be a modern feminist woman while trying to be a wife and mother. You’re considered a bad mom if you work too much and maintain a life outside of your family yet jobs do not make provisions such as daycare to help. Plus, you’re considered a “bad” independent, modern woman if you stick to traditional roles such as a housewife/stay-at-home mom. Once again, there is no happy medium in these situations. Before women were concerned about birth control and trying to promote their sexuality but now, women seem to be more concerned about how to juggle between being a workingwoman and wife/mother. The only positive is that today’s modern women may not feel the stigma of marriage breathing down their necks like back in the day since the age criteria for when you “should” be married is not as visible in today’s society. However, there is a lot of stigma behind trying to be the “independent feminist” while in a relationship or marriage. Most people seem to have the idea that a feminist is a single woman because she’s supposed to be able to survive without a man. However, just because a woman enters a relationship or a marriage does not mean she is giving up her autonomy to be taken care of. Why can’t people see that marriage can be an equal partnership as opposed to one or the other being the one “in charge”? Oh well, maybe the third wave or the fourth wave or whatever other waves can accomplish the goals of equality that have yet to be accomplished.

POETRY SECTION That Which Is Love DIANA SHPREKHER There’s a word that’s often spoken. We challenge the definition. We change the circumstances. We choose to become it. We do not know what makes this word. We do not know the challenges it possesses. We do not know where it exists. We dare to venture to find the word. We search each caress, look, kiss for the word. We stay believing we’ll find the magic in the word. But alas, this a difficult word to hold. We cannot possess it in our hands. The word possesses us in every fashion that we live. It eats away us when we lose it till we go mad. It devours our consciousness to the very periphery of our bones. We believe we beat on for this word. We have built life, society, religion, and government. From this tiny often spoken name. We say it over and over and over again, Repeating like a ferris wheel that turns round and round. We say it but how often do we really understand or mean it? We can only understand by precedence, But we are blinded by experience. Such wonder how we are so affected by this one tiny, little word.

Is the Fight Worth It? DIANA SHPREKHER Never shown me the path Always let me go To find the stars on my own I am wind flowing steadily Letting my pulse be my guide All the shadows before me now Don’t scare me much But I still wonder If the fight is worth it Never shown me the path Always making my own All the dreams I’m searching for all the hope I need All the wisdom that I have Everything I do and will possess Doesn’t tell me much And I still wonder If the fight is worth it The light in my face Breaks me from wanderlust Now I can see a path in stone The light is my guide To the stars that shine forevermore I must listen to voices in the air And I won’t have to wonder If the fight is worth it I will know that it is

Universal Health Care vs. Private Health Care Left View

Right View

DIANA SHPREKHER

ANONYMOUS

The issue we keep hearing on the news lately is all about health reform. Health reform has interested to be a bigger concern with the recent unemployment rate rising continuously. More people are losing their jobs and losing their insurances as a result. When a person loses their job, not only do they find themselves in a bind economically but also, they are faced with the fact that they have paid for insurance coverage that they cannot be paid back for even if they never used their coverage. There are public insurances available but often, they are not substantial enough to cover every expense and they do not cover pre-existing conditions. It’s a sad fact for many Americans today. However, President Barack Obama is offering a possible solution and that is Universal Health Care. A lot of countries including France and Canada Photo Taken By: have already established UniDiana Shprekher versal Health Care in their countries. The idea of Universal Health Care is that everyone is covered under a governmentbased insurance even if you have a pre-existing condition. Obama hopes to put forth this plan to help every American receive the coverage and benefits that it needs to live a long and healthy life. Now, I know what people might be saying: what’s the catch? Yes, it’s going to cost some money to implement this plan. However, sometimes you have to spend a little money to reap the benefits. This health care could help a lot of people that really need medical coverage. One of the issues addressed was the idea of the government taking over yet another thing but Obama combated that with the idea that this coverage is optional. You can choose to stay with the private health insurance but if you lose your job or become unhappy with your current coverage at any point, you have the option of this Universal Health Insurance. It can act as a nice safety net in a way. Now, do not think that this is going to be easy or a situation that the country will transition to easily or right away but it could definitely be a viable solution to the health care dilemma as a result of unemployment. In fact, if this idea had been implemented before then maybe a lot of the Americans that are unemployed and sick now would be getting the coverage they so desperately need at their hour of crisis now. We’re talking about people’s lives and their health. Everyone deserves to right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness as it states in the Constitution. If that’s really the case, then Americans deserve the right to better and healthier lives that Universal Health Care can provide!

Today, the great debate in America is health care. President Obama has talked a lot about health care and the urgency to create better health care policies with this Universal Health Care idea. Can we say wishful thinking? I think so. As nice and peachy the idea of Universal Health Care seems with the promise to provide coverage for all, it’s not a very well thought out plan as of now. Obama seems to have all the answers when it comes to what the benefits entail but where is the concrete plan that shows us the actual money that will be invested versus the return on that investment. We are already in the multitude of trillions of dollars in debt. Do we really need more debt to pile up? Aren’t there more important issues to be concerned with like the unemployment rate? We should be concentrating on saving money not spending it. Remember, if the government needs money, they’re going to tax us for it. So, you might have just gotten health coverage but you’re still paying more in the end with the taxes you will have to pay to front the government for these benefits and to sustain such benefits. If the fact that money is a major issue is not enough of a negative for Universal Health Care, how about the fact that this will be yet another thing that the central government will have control over? Do you really think that the government will let you use private insurances when it can regulate health care itself? Private insurances will be put out of business and so will all those public insurance services that have been created with the idea of helping provide insurance to those who need it most. After that, we will all be in an autonomized state of government-run health care. This is yet another way of the government limiting our choices and using our money to do so. There are Americans who are perfectly happy with their insurance companies yet the government will subject them to a universal health plan that might not cover every condition that the current insurance covers. Not to mention, hospitals and clinics are already overrun with long waiting periods and people with severe issues. Can you imagine what Universal Health Care will do to these hospitals and clinics? The waiting period to treat people can be exponentially worse than ever. Is it not enough that we pay taxes for government subsidized Social Security, Retirement benefits, the Police forces, the Firefighter departments, the Postal Service, other government agencies but must health insurance also be a government-operated thing that we pay money for with possibly limited benefits?

Reviews Galore Continued from Page 1 (What’s the Deal With Reality Television?) their image rather than helps it. With fewer airings of music videos, MTV is having less to do with music and more to do with creating “entertaining” programming. And of course, “The Hills” epitomizes what I am addressing about on reality television. The people on this show, Lauren Conrad, Audrina Patridge, and of course, Spencer and Heidi Pratt live out their lives in sunny LA with some help from the script the producers give them. If many have not heard, “The Hills” is in fact scripted reality. I watched only five minutes of this and began thinking: what do these people contribute to society? I think Al Roker was right in saying that Spencer and Heidi symbolize what is wrong with America today. I recently picked up an issue of New York magazine, where they mentioned in a short article that Spencer handed out copies of Playboy with his wife on the cover to passengers on their airplane back from the Caribbean. How narcissistic is that? VHI’s programming is not better. Trash shows like “Rock of Love” just make one want to gag. It’s so disgusting. I’ve always thought that the producers went driving along some road in Las Vegas, screen tested a bunch of hookers and cast them on the show. “Daisy of Love” is no better. One prostitute looking for her one true love, among a group of creeps and freeloaders. I make a call out to all the men reading this article: How many of you would want to bring home this woman to meet your parents? Any takers? I wrote this article in an attempt to open people’s minds to how television has changed its content over the years. Nowadays, just about anyone will get their own show on television, despite how unqualified or untalented they are. These people are not idols and celebrities to be admired and imitated. I know my language might seem harsh, but this is a subject that I feel very strong about. And all of you reading this, please do the sensible thing and do something better with your time than watching any of this programming!

Tyler Perry Makes Gold

MATTHEW GARR Last weekend my friend and I went to see Tyler Perry’s latest triumph, “I Can Do Bad All By Myself.” This movie is a total emotional roller coaster, combining the element of intense drama with small tidbits of comedy. In this movie, Tyler Perry plays three roles, Madea, the grandfather, and the priest. There is one scene close to the end were the priest sings a wonderfully powerful song filled with hope. Most of the people in the theater, men, women and children, were balling in their seats. Being that it is a drama, the only funny parts in it are the parts with Madea. The funniest part was when she was trying to explain the bible to a little girl. But she blends all the stories together like Jonah and the Whale, and Noah’s Ark. It is hilarious!! But the laugher abruptly stops as we are introduced to a drunken club singer with an abusive boyfriend. Her niece and nephews show up at her door and tell her that their grandmother has abandoned them. At first she does not want to take them in because she is selfish and does not want the responsibility of looking after them. However, her priorities change as the movie progresses and she learns to love them; they are family after all. An incredibly talented woman by the name of Taraji P. Henson plays this club singer. She bursts onto the screen with such intensity, and throughout the movie displays a mix of anger, hatred, compassion, self-loathing, and self-discovery. A word to the wise, if anyone goes to see this movie, as they defiantly should, prepare to experience all the emotions portrayed in cinema; yeah, it is that good! Additionally, Mary J. Blige gives a fiery performance and sings a riveting song apply named “I Can Do Bad All By Myself.” Tyler Perry’s “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” is a definite success as a movie and I urge all of you to see it!
