The 2017-2018 school year promises to be both exciting and busy for the art department. On November 2, fourth graders will have the opportunity to attend Le Papillon—an original performance featuring a marvelous mixture of art, folk ballet, ballet, original and live music provided by The Has Beans, along with bilingual narration by adult and child actors, and projections of iconic drawings of Floyd Sonnier. \ December is going to be a very busy month as visiting artists and our very own students will perform for students and parents. First, first and second grade students will get to experience “Traditions of Chinese Acrobatics.” In this one-woman performance, Li Liu performs hand balancing, plate spinning, ribbon dancing, diabolos and foot juggling. Li explains some of the rituals of Chinese New Year, teaches the students some basic Chinese phrases, and encourages them to think about what it might have been like to grow up in a different time and place. Third grade art students will present their quarterly showcase featuring band, dance, drama, visual art, strings, piano and vocal music performances on December 14 in the cafetorium. The art department has already begun rehearsing for our first production, The Story of the Nutcracker, which combines fifth grade band, dance, drama, piano, strings, visual art, fine arts and vocal music students. This musical collaboration will take place on Thursday, December 21 in the J. Wallace James cafetorium. Over 150 students have been working very hard rehearsing and are excited to spread Christmas cheer through The Story of the Nutcracker.
