EURAXESS North America Science Slam 2017 (part of European Research Day 2017) Introduction I. What is a science slam? A science slam is a scientific talk where scientists present their own scientific research work in a given time frame – usually 6 minutes or less - in front of a non-expert audience. The focus lies on teaching current science to a diverse audience in an entertaining way. The presentation is judged by the audience [and if applicable a jury]. A science slam is a form of science communication. (Source: Wikipedia) II. What is EURAXESS Worldwide? EURAXESS Worldwide is a networking tool for European researchers working outside Europe and non-European ones wishing to collaborate and/or pursue a research career in Europe. It has thus far been launched in North America (Canada and the USA), Japan, China, India, the ASEAN hub (encompassing Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam), and Brazil. EURAXESS Brazil also covers Latin American and Caribbean countries (CELAC). EURAXESS Worldwide provides information about research in Europe, job vacancies, European research policy, as well as opportunities for research funding, international collaboration and trans-national mobility. III. What is EURAXESS North America? EURAXESS North America links researchers in North America with the European Research Area. We provide free information and events on research funding, research careers and collaboration opportunities with Europe.

Terms and Conditions I. Who is eligible to participate? 1. The competition is open to participants from all nationalities in all Information and Communications Technologies’ (ICT) fields. Only one entry per person. Examples of ICT entries include, but are not limited to: E-Health, E-Governance, Cyber Security, Digital Inclusion, Artificial Intelligence...etc. 2. Upon submission, participants should be: 
 a) 18 years or older AND
 b) enrolled in a Masters or PhD programme or working as a professor or researcher at a recognized university, research institute/centre or private research company in North America. 
 3. Participants must be willing and able to participate in the EURAXESS Science Slam North America that will be held in Google offices in Washington DC on 21 September 2017, as part of European Research Day (#ERD17) in partnership with DISCOVERY & Google.
 4. The finalists will be evaluated by an audience of non-experts and an expert jury consisting of Google, DISCOVERY and Embassy of Estonia representatives. II. How to participate? 1. Get creative and develop an original idea to present your research project to the world: Old-school presentation, tap dancing, singing, live experiment, etc. FINAL Presentations can be supported by video and audio material, Power point slides and any other kind of media available, as well as by scientific equipment, in accordance with the venue's capacity and security measures. 
 2. Submit a ‘promo’ video: 90 seconds (pre-recorded), 120 seconds (livestream) and a tweet tagging us with the presentation title of your final presentation. 3. All Science Slam presentations must be in English. 4. Upload your video: a. sending the video or its link via email to [email protected] b. upload it on any other platform (such as YouTube) and post a link to any/all our social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn).

III. Assessment and Short-listing: Five finalists will be selected from all submissions received by the deadline. Entries will be assessed based on the following criteria scaled 1-10: Accessibility for non-experts 
 Conceptualisation of slam 
 Presentation style 
 Originality & Creativity 
 Trans-platform social media entries automatically receive 5 points. IV. Deadline Deadline for submissions is 13 September 2017. EURAXESS North America accepts no responsibility for entries that are defective, lost or delayed, or which are not received for any reason. A notification email confirming receipt will be sent within 3 working days. 
 V. Prize to be awarded to finalists  The 5 finalists will be entitled to participate in a panel on scientific communication to be held at EURAXESS North America’s European Scientific Diasporas Third Annual Meeting on 11 December 2017 at the Embassy of France, Washington D.C.  The winner of the LIVE finals will be awarded the following prize: The winner will be invited to participate in the DISCOVERY Transatlantic ICT Forum to be held in Brussels on 30 November 2017, in the European Parliament, co-located with the European Innovation Week. DISCOVERY will cover the flight (economy class) and 2 nights of accommodation in Brussels. VI. Intellectual property rights and disqualification By participating in this competition all participants declare that they hold the intellectual property rights to the research presented. Abusive and derogatory entries will be disqualified.
