FIREARM-RELATED CRIME AND ARREST ACTIVITY Issue Date: February 4, 2016
The GIVE initiative targets 20 jurisdictions within 17 counties upstate and on Long Island. The GIVE totals include data from: Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, Hempstead, Jamestown, Kingston, Middletown, Mount Vernon, Nassau County, Newburgh, Niagara Falls, Poughkeepsie, Rochester, Schenectady, Spring Valley, Suffolk County, Syracuse, Troy, Utica and Yonkers.
FIREARM-RELATED VIOLENT CRIMES REPORTED WITHIN JURISDICTIONS WERE DOWN (-6%) WITH 3,462 REPORTED IN 2015. This was also significantly below the five year average (-10%). GIVE JURISDICTIONS REPORTED 855 SHOOTING INCIDENTS INVOLVING INJURY IN 2015, UP (+5%) COMPARED TO 2014. Shooting incidents were also up (+6%) as compared to the five year average. Six jurisdictions reported significant increases in shootings during 2015: Mount Vernon (22 vs. 16), Rochester (191 vs. 168), Schenectady (24 vs. 15), Suffolk (74 vs. 65), Syracuse (113 vs. 94) and Yonkers (34 vs. 27). SHOOTING INCIDENTS DECREASED IN DECEMBER. GIVE sites reported significant increases in July through September and November, but reported a decrease in December. There were 77 shooting incidents reported in December 2015 as compared to 85 reported in December 2014. SHOOTING HOMICIDES WERE DOWN (-8%) IN 2015 WITH 125 REPORTED, COMPARED TO 136 REPORTED IN 2014. THERE WERE 7 SHOOTING HOMICIDES IN DECEMBER 2015, FEWER THAN RECENT MONTHS, AND LESS THAN THE NUMBER REPORTED IN RECENT YEARS FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER. December 2015 (7) was below both the five year average for December (15) and December 2014 (24). The 7 shooting homicides in December 2015 were reported within four jurisdictions: Buffalo (2), Suffolk (3), Syracuse (1), and Utica (1).

DATA DEFINITIONS Crime Data Violent Crime – Sum total of reported murders, rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults. Firearm-Related Violent Crime - Number of reported violent crimes where a firearm was believed to be present or used during the commission of the crime. Firearm Activity Data Shooting Incidents Involving Injury – Number of shooting incidents during the month where one or more persons were injured or killed as a result of the shooting. Shooting Victims (Persons Hit) – Number of victims shot or killed in the shooting incidents reported. Individuals Killed by Gun Violence – Number of murders resulting from firearm-related injuries. Guns Recovered/Traced Through the ATF – The number of crime gun traces submitted by GIVE agencies to the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). Submissions include information on firearms that have been seized, recovered, and found by the local law enforcement agencies. Data is reported each month by GIVE jurisdictions.
How to Interpret the Data: The jurisdiction specific data pages can be used as a guide to monitor firearm-related crime trends in the GIVE jurisdictions. The graphs and data tables present 12 months of data for the previous year (2013), the 5 Year Average (2009-2013) for the months indicated, and monthly data for the current year-to-date (2014). The 2014 data is auto-populated, and months outside the reporting period will display zeros which should be interpreted as N/A.

Interpretation: In the above example, the 2014 year-to-date reporting period for Sample City is JanuaryFebruary. Since the reporting period for 2014 is limited to January-February, the 2014 months of MarchDecember are populated with zeros.
