OIT’s Five-Year IT Roadmaps Aligning business goals with technology forecasts
Why the Roadmaps Were Created
The agency Five-Year IT Roadmaps were created by OIT at the request of the Joint Technology Committee (JTC) to highlight IT funding needs of the state executive branch. The documents align technologies across agencies by: • Establishing a five-year planning horizon • Providing insight into IT funding gaps • Showing an enterprise IT initiative timeline • Serving as the first cohesive executive branch IT strategy
How the Roadmaps Add Value
The agency Five-Year IT Roadmaps are multipurpose plans that will add value by: • Aligning strategic direction across state technologies • Reducing technology debt (deferred maintenance, equipment and software refreshes that are known to create risk in an IT system) and complexity in meeting compliance • Allowing business goals and initiatives to drive technology solutions • Creating awareness of technology trends and changes, which will allow OIT to mitigate instability in long-term planning
What to Expect in the Future
The agency Five-Year IT Roadmaps are intended to be an ongoing source of information for the JTC, the agencies and OIT. This will be achieved by: • Updating the IT roadmaps twice per year • Considering the IT roadmaps as living documents • Improving how OIT supports agency long-term strategies by better understanding business priorities and budgets • Understanding that as state IT strategies mature, these roadmaps will become more sophisticated and accurate
