Fixing the Logitech HD Skype Camera with the $15 TL-WR702N mini router https://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-WR702N-Wireless-Repeater-150Mbps/dp/B007PTCFFW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1466462244&sr=8-1&keywords=tl-wr702n
1.
In a command prompt or shell (on Windows, win+r then cmd), ping www.skype.com
2.
Observe and record the IP address that ping is trying to use (Skype IP)
3.
Plug in the mini router power (you can use USB port of set up PC)
4.
Connect PC to mini router WIFI network (see bottom of device for SSID and password)
5.
In a web browser, open http://tplinklogin.net/ and log in with username admin, password admin
6. 7.
Click Network, then LAN. For Address Type, select Static IP For IP Address, enter the Skype IP recorded in step 2, then click save. You will get a notice that this will cause a router reboot, choose OK.
8. Wait a couple minutes, and then type the Skype IP address saved earlier into the address bar. If you have problems connecting, try another browser (or clear cache). You will get the router login screen again. 9. Login with username ‘admin’ and password ‘admin’ again.
NOTE: If you see a man-in-the-middle warning, your WIFI may have reverted to your original network. If so, reconnect to the mini router’s wifi network.
10. Select System Tools, then Password. Change the admin user name and password to something more secure, then click save. You will be prompted for you new username and password. It’s probably ok to still use admin as the username, but something else would be a bit more secure. You will be prompted to login with the new credentials. NOTE: If you haven’t done this on your main router, you really should.
12.
Select ‘Quick Setup’, then click next
13.
Select ‘Router Mode’, then click next
14.
Enter wireless settings for a new WIFI network, for the Skype camera to use, then click next. Your original network will remain in tact.
15.
Set you WAN (internet) connection type. In all likelihood this is Dynamic IP (DHCP). Click Next.
16. Select whether you are using a cable modem. Likely this setting won’t matter much, since the mini router is really just a client of your existing network.
17.
Observe the confirmation screen that your router is set up. Click Reboot. Wait a few minutes.
18. Finally, connect the mini router to your original router via Ethernet, and provide power to the mini router. In my case, I placed the mini router near the Logitech camera, and took the wired connection from the camera to provide to the mini router instead. On the Logitech HD Skype camera perform a wireless network setup and connect it to your new wireless network. You should now be able to connect to your new wireless network, access the internet and ping www.skype.com, and your camera should now work properly.
NOTE: If you need to set up a 2nd mini router to ship to someone less technically inclined (say grandparents, etc), it may be usefull to back up this configuration in the router menu (System Tools then Backup and Restore), then restore it to the 2nd router as a starting point. All you may need to change after the restoration is the WIFI SSID and password for the other party’s preferences.
