Oakland Food Policy Council worked with the HOPE Collaborative to create and pilot a Food Justice Curriculum. We are now making this curriculum available for your use. Topic 1: Community Values and Food Systems Overview Create and share values that contribute to a healthy working atmosphere while learning basic concepts about food systems. Changing the narrative of our food culture as a crucial step to changing the practices and policies that drive a broken food system. We learn to tell our own story so the truth of who we are is represented and our knowledge base and cultural tools can be accurately reflected in our systems and policies. Topic 2: Food as Part of our Identify Create awareness of the food and beverage industry’s influences on food choices, its targeting of low income communities of color, and the role of government in encouraging or restricting these practices. Topic 3: We Are What We Eat Get participants thinking about how food production affects both our individual health as consumers, the health of workers and their families, and the health of our ecosystem. Topic 4: Food Miles Participants will compare and contrast conventional distribution systems and alternative methods. Topic 5: Food Labor Raise participants’ awareness and understanding about the working conditions of food system workers, wages, salaries, labor and isolate some of the reasons why food system workers continue to be one of the most economically disadvantaged groups in the United States.
Topic 6: Food Desert to Food Justice Create awareness of how city planning, local economy, race and class play a crucial role in food access. We specifically look to the history of red lining to understand the human geography and proximity to food in Oakland, CA.
