Introduction The Deschutes National Forest will soon begin filling multiple temporary biological technician positions for the 2015 field season. Openings are available at the GS-6, GS-5, and GS-4 levels.
Position Announcement Number Duty Station Bological Technican (Wildlife) GS-6wildlife technician positions with a maximum Bend, Sisters, These are TEMPORARY SEASONAL six month tourCrescent, schedule Oregon Bological (NTE 1039 Technican hrs.). The anticipated (Wildlife)start GS-5 date varies by district, generally early March for Bend, Bend, Sisters, and April Crescent, for Sisters Oregon and Crescent with tours available through September and October. The GS 4 position will beginSisters, mid-JuneCrescent, and end midBological Technican (Wildlife) GS-4 Bend, Oregon September. The duty station for the GS 6 positions are located in Bend, OR; for the GS 5, Bend, Crescent, and Sisters, OR; and the GS 4 position is only available at Crescent, OR. Housing may be available at the Crescent and Sisters Districts. Applicants for positions in Bend will be responsible for their own housing and transportation to and from the District office located on Deschutes Market Rd. Positions will be full-time (40+ hours/week)
Summary of Position Primary responsibilities include: Conducting day and night-time spotted owl surveys Documentation and report writing Driving, snowmobiling and snowshoeing or hiking to field locations Performing miscellaneous wildlife related tasks as needed including fence repair, clearing roads, etc. Conducting additional surveys for various wildlife species and habitats If selected, candidates will be expected to work a flex schedule that may include night, day or split shifts up to 11.5 hours. Selected individuals should be prepared and will be expected to work in inclement weather and other adverse conditions. Candidates must be capable of walking or snowshoeing over 10 miles per shift on steep terrain at high elevations. Candidates must also have excellent hearing ability with or without assistive devices.

Bachelor’s degree with 24 semester/36 quarter hours of relevant science courses, or one-year of GS-4 experience; or a combination of the two Previous field experience with raptor surveys or other wildlife surveys preferable Capable of working in rugged outdoor settings, self-motivated under minimal supervision Snowmobile and winter backcountry experience beneficial Team player with an excellent work ethic Valid driver’s license is required Desire for a career in wildlife biology

Six months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience or 2 years of College or technical education of relevant science courses, or one-year of GS-3 experience; or a combination of the two. Previous field experience preferable Capable of working in rugged outdoor settings and self-motivated. Backcountry experience not required but beneficial. Team player with an excellent work ethic Valid driver’s license is required Desire for a career in wildlife biology
