Our school is named Lycée Polyvalent Européen Stéphane Hessel. It is in Epernay, a town with 25, 000 inhabitants in the vineyard of Champagne (150 kms away from downtown Paris). It is a comprehensive secondary school with pupils from a wide social background. There are about 1800 pupils in our school: 1352 in secondary school and 448 in vocational school. Pupils are aged from 15 to 22, as we have 134 students in higher education sections (BTS NRC, CGO, MUC). At least 10% of the pupils are from ethnic minorities of North Africa as well as Turkey, most of them in vocational teaching. 20% of our pupils get grants from the department of education to study. The practice a foreign language is a problem for many pupils who never leave their national area. The development of international relations and pupil mobility is part of the school project. The “European section” started in 2010, we already have a British partner school but we are looking for an American partnership involving regular trips and long-term links between the two schools to widen our pupils’ horizons as they are particularly motivated by English and ready to discover new countries and customs.
