Dear Ian Comfort and Rupert Gather, I recently read with interest about the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant that the AET signed in 2013 in this document on the UK Government website: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/ attachment_data/file/253765/Academies_Enterprise_Trust_Corporate_Covenant.pdf.
My name is Owen Everett. I'm the Education Worker at ForcesWatch, a small not-for-profit organisation based in London that conducts research into the UK military's recruitment practice and influence in the education system, raises concerns and encouraging debate where we see necessary. I would be very grateful if you could clarify a few things for me regarding your Armed Forces Corporate Covenant: - Did you develop a national framework for realising the Corporate Covenant in your academies, or are individual academies given flexibility to meet the AET's commitments in whatever way they see feasible and appropriate? In either case can you provide details? - You outlined your plan to have your academies publish your support for all aspects of the Military Ethos in Schools programme on their websites; has this happened? I cannot find any reference to it on the AET's central google site. - Please can you send me a copy of the document of the AET Board's formal resolution on supporting the development of cadet forces in your academies (mentioned in the above-mentioned document)? - How many of your academies have set up - or partnered with an existing - Combined Cadet Force since you signed the Corporate Covenant? And how many more do you hope will follow suite by 2020? - Have students' parents/guardians been consulted before academies have set up/partnered with CCFs? - Are CCF participation and academies' Armed Forces Day activities be compulsory for students? If so, how do your academies deal with students who don't want to participate for ethical/political reasons? ‐ Is the lengthy absence of potentially numerous teachers (if you succeed in recruiting reservists and encouraging current staff to join the Reserves) not detrimental to students’ studies? And what provisions would you put in place to deal with possible mental injury among teachers' returning from war zones?
