rom the impact of the 2016 election on gaming to casinos’ opportunity to invest in eSports to appealing to the next generation of customers, this year’s Global Gaming Expo (G2E) will feature robust conversation on the industry’s hottest topics to prepare attendees for the rapidly growing casino gaming landscape. Presented by the American Gaming Association (AGA), the world’s premier international gaming trade show and conference returns to Las Vegas September 27–29 at the Sands Expo and Convention Center. Through a superior gaming floor and extended, comprehensive seminar tracks, attendees will experience firsthand the future of the casino gaming industry, as well as explore a variety of ways to increase their bottom line. Additionally, for the first time, AGA is offering a discount—50 percent off of registration fees—to its members. In another first for the trade show, AGA will partner with the National Indian Gaming Association (NIGA) for a keynote opening session on Tuesday morning with Chairman Ernie Stevens to discuss the further unification of the casino industry’s two key sectors— tribal and commercial. In addition, attendees will be treated to dynamic keynote speeches all three days by marquee personalities representing business, sports and gaming. Further, due to popular demand, G2E 2016 will bring back its seminar tracks for Tuesday and Wednesday allowing attendees to explore multiple categories in-depth, including tribal interests, gaming policy, emerging gaming methods, career development and casino property products. We introduced the topic of eSports at last year’s show, and the industry is growing at lightning speed. This year, gaming professionals will gain an understanding of the structure of this potentially lucrative business opportunity for casinos through sessions on eSports professional leagues, key demographics and the challenges involved with compliance and responsible gaming. In one seminar, we will take a deeper dive into the largest segment in the market today—millennials. The seminar will explore 4 | G2E Preview 2016

the different ways to attract this lucrative market—which has surpassed baby boomers in size and shows a lower propensity for gambling than past generations—by examining the group’s spending and behavioral habits. Additionally, with G2E taking place just three weeks before the first-ever presidential debate in Las Vegas and a little more than a month before Election Day, attendees will receive an inside look into how the election will play a crucial role in the future of the casino gaming industry. During a special speed session discussion, experts will explore the potential post-election scenarios and gaming-specific legislation proprieties. Other notable seminars will dig into topics including the latest innovations in gaming methods and products with iGaming, table games and slots. While walking the show floor, attendees will experience a new Integrated Resort Experience. Broken into four major segments—Hospitality Concepts, Technology Solutions, Food and Beverage and Entertainment—the Integrated Resort Experience, which will now be anchored on one end of the main show floor, will feature non-gaming exhibitors focused on how to attract casino guests for longer and more engaged hotel stays. As part of the Integrated Resort Experience, a one-day spa association workshop will showcase how spas can boost a company’s brand with their ability to capture and retain guests. With these features, AGA is focused on the evolution of G2E to ensure it keeps up with the constantly evolving industry. Casino gaming is entering an exciting era with new trends, technology and opportunities that will power the $240 billion sector into the future. G2E 2016 will deliver a platform for all gaming-related businesses to equip themselves with the tools that will allow them to thrive for years to come. Thank you for your support, and I look forward to seeing you in Las Vegas. Geoff Freeman is president and CEO of the American Gaming Association. Follow him on Twitter: @GeoffFreemanAGA.

Ed Several,

Senior Vice President and General Manager, Reed Exhibitions

2E makes some dramatic changes both in floor space and content in 2016. Ed Several, in his second year at the helm of G2E, is senior vice president and general manager of Reed Exhibitions, with responsibility for several other large trade shows besides G2E. Since the beginning, Several has taken a personal interest in G2E and introduced some unique ideas, most importantly the Integrated Resort Experience, an offshoot of the G2E show floor that concentrates on nongaming amenities, and this year will be joined with G2E on the same exhibit floor. Together with the team at the American Gaming Association, Several promises to take G2E to the next level and provide the gaming industry with the most cuttingedge conference and trade show in years.

G2E PREVIEW: This is your second

year at G2E, and you have truly made a huge impact on the success of the show. Tell us how you expect the show to grow this year.

ED SEVERAL: Together with the American Gaming Association, the G2E team has worked hard to bring more exhibitions across every gaming category, offering even more selection and variety for attendees. This year’s event will also feature enhanced seminars focused on addressing the key issues that casino operators wrestle with every day. Together, more education focused on improving business outcomes, along with an expanded variety of exhibitors, will make this year’s G2E the most valuable ever.

You recently saw a nice increase in exhibit space and attendance at G2E Asia in Macau, which Reed also operates. Will G2E have a similar increase in 2016? With more exhibiting companies and more exhibit space sold, G2E 2016 is already larger than it was in 2015. Our attendance is running ahead of last year, and we are pleased to be attracting key decision-makers from every significant casino in North America at our event. 6 | G2E Preview 2016

Last year, the establishment of the Integrated Resort Experience brought lots of non-gaming elements into the show. Tell us how this will be different and better this year.

have the opportunity to discuss what types of wagering have generated the largest consumer demand, review its current impact and explore what the future holds for this growing market.

We’ve listened to our customers and moved the Integrated Resort Experience directly onto the show floor. This will further combine non-gaming with traditional gaming, and offer attendees new ways of driving revenue from alternate sources. Gaming will always be at the heart of our event, and Integrated Resort Experience, now located as part of the show floor, further reinforces how gaming and non-gaming can work together to grow a casino’s total revenue.

eSports is also an important element of the casinos in 2016. Will G2E address this growing segment?

Sports betting seems to be a central theme in the show this year. Your partner, the AGA, has made it a central part of its goals. What can we expect out of G2E in this regard? We applaud the effort the American Gaming Association has put forth to progress legalized sports betting in the United States. Our education sessions will cover this topic, and we will have several networking sessions for the industry to discuss this very important initiative. Education session attendees will

eSports may be the next big business opportunity for casinos. With it opens channels for new customers and revenue streams as well as challenges with compliance and responsible gaming. Education attendees will learn how to stay ahead of this new wave by understanding the structure of eSports professional leagues, the demographics of players and spectators and insights into regulatory challenges. This is an exciting and growing area, and to provide the G2E audience with an up-close and personal experience, we will not only have education sessions covering eSports, but an actual, live competition featuring some of the best eSports players in the world right on the show floor. This means attendees will not only be able to learn in classrooms, but experience it live with the ability to ask questions and meet the players. continued on pg. 8

Better Players,

Better Rewards?

How skill games could transform the way slot games are played By Dave Bontempo

E

xpand the skill-games debate. Make it white hot.

The subject that caught traction at G2E 2015, with several companies displaying products to emphasize game skill and player interaction, breathes new fire. Regulatory trends in Nevada and New Jersey formally bless this niche of new-world slot revenue via old-school game themes. State agencies outlined rules by which companies must operate it, stoking the flames of millennial mystique. “Whenever there are new regs and standards, there is a lot of hype around it,” says Kent Young, the founder of Reno-based Spin Games. “You hear about this from all segments of the market. There is obviously a huge push to come up with a millennial product, and a lot of people see skill-based games as the Holy Grail to that assessment.” The assessment has origins in technology fundamentals. Blaine Graboyes, the CEO of New York-based GameCo, labels an eSports-led internet video game audience of about 70 million as the seeds of a brick-and-mortar windfall. Video game events sell out major sports arenas. Even a small crossover of that group into the casino realm would produce significant revenue. “This was one of the hot topics at G2E last year, and I think it will be the topic this year, whether you want to call this eSports or video games,” Graboyes predicts. “Many operators have told me that if you could bring the eSports experience into a casino, that would be phenomenal. Right now, it’s the greatest thing you’ve never heard of.” And that will change. The age of interactive, ego-centric video game play, replete with leaderboards and bonus rounds, finds a market ripe for game infusion. Slot machine wagering in Nevada has declined by nearly 25 percent in the last 10 years. That’s a seismic plunge for a sector that had overtaken table games, particularly craps, as the gaming 10 | G2E Preview 2016

industry bellwether. A void has emerged. An aging population, the influx of online alternatives and the generational jockeying of boomers, millennials and Gen Xers form a melting pot for the slot-type dollar. Will the group that grew up on arcades find a home inside a casino that emphasizes their favorite game? Companies approach the question from different vantage points.

The Dream

GAMECO, BASED IN NEW YORK, was founded by video game, casino gaming, technology and live-event veterans. It hopes to parlay that talent blend into a major product rollout before G2E. The company has applied for approval in New Jersey, as well as GLI elsewhere. GameCo wants to unveil a new game title every month starting in 2017 and expand to several states each year. The video gaming machine (VGM) is the product targeted for casino floors. VGM incorporates the elements of arcade games into the look and feel of slot machines. It will have a bill validator, TITO printer and a chair or stool, but may also take on the standing configuration linked to arcade machines. Games will be familiar titles from top publishers, featuring first-person action, sports, racing and fighting games in a 30-second to 90-second time span. While state regulations require minimum payback percentages, usually 85 percent or higher, the GameCo VGM will likely contain a hold of about 10 percent, with the typical action lasting 45 seconds. The initial game, Danger Arena, will be random in its display of about 5,000 maps, denoting a course of play. The skill element involves players trying to kill up to 10 robots, with a performance of five or above constituting a payout. There will be seven pay denominations ranging from 50 cents to $25, Graboyes indicates.

p10-13 g2e16_skillgames.qxp_Layout 1 7/12/16 1:23 PM Page 11

This was one of the hot topics at G2E last year, and I think it will be the topic this year. Many operators have told me that if you could bring the eSports experience into a casino, that would be phenomenal. Right now, it’s the greatest thing you’ve never heard of.

GameCo CEO Blaine Graboyes

The demographics for this action are widespread. “If you do a four-part test and ask people first if they are over 21, second if they are in the top household income, third if they play video games and fourth if they visit casinos at least once a year, you come to a total of approximately 23 million Americans,” Graboyes asserts. “When you break that down, you have about 9 million millennials, 8 million Gen Xers and believe it or not, about 6 million boomers. So much of the discussion in the casino world is millennials, millennials, millennials. Granted, that group is a big segment. But there are many people who grew up playing video games who are not slot players. You want to find a home for the player, regardless of that person’s age.” Will patrons embrace the game time? Slots produce quick outcomes, while classic arcade-style games award longer time to a skilled player. “I’m in awe of how optimized the slot machines have become,” Graboyes says. “The pace of gambling is tremendous. You often have an outcome every eight or nine seconds. We won’t match that on day one, but I’m confident we can at least

much else at a casino because they don’t want the random, passive experience of the slot machine. We’re bringing the video-game experience to the casino floor, or perhaps the eSports experience.”

AGEM’s Interested Eye

“THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR GAME DEVELOPERS working to solve this new puzzle is just how much to reward the better skill players without someone penalizing the less skilled,” says Marcus Prater, executive director of the Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers, whose member companies deliver the machines many skill-based games will be played on. AGEM works to further the interests of gaming equipment suppliers through political action, regulatory influence and trade show partnerships. “At the end of the day, the game companies and machine companies have to certify both to regulators and their customers a payback percentage that can be counted on,” Prater adds. The group will closely monitor developments. The AGEM roster includes several industry kingpins, from IGT to Scientific Games, Konami, Gaming Partners International and Aristocrat Technologies, just to name a few. Prater believes it may soon be time to place theories of skill, payback percentage and time on device into practice. Focus groups and mathematicians can run only so many probabilities in their labs. Bring the games to the floor and tweak the payout percentages if necessary, he concludes. Prater cites Frogger as an ideal skill-based casino game, and says Konami is working on one. (The company released an RNG-based slot version of the game last year.) Set to music and sound effects, the frog tries to cross the road and the river to reach a home base, with bonuses based upon speed. “It’s a perfect game for this time,” he says. “The first few levels are fairly easily attainable and then, as you know, the highway speeds up, the Gamblit’s Grab Poker, which was featured at G2E waterway speeds up and the game becomes harder last year, combines both skill and social interaction and harder. It’s just like the arcade experience.” Prater suggests that baby boomers don’t neceshit the floor averages (to justify their presence.)” sarily have to yield the floor to millennials. He also believes operaGameCo plans to unveil core, mid-core and casual brands, to tors can tailor this innovation to specific needs. entice an array of new customers, Graboyes says. “A sound casino marketing implementation, I think, is to pro“From a game perspective, this provides a level of entertainmote the hell out of it,” he says. “Give it its own environment, its ment for our audience that does not exist,” he says. “From a casiown area, its own signage. You want to tell the world that these no perspective, we are bringing a new audience of gamers onto are groundbreaking new games, available only here, and if you the casino floor. You hear about this from all segments of the market. There is obviously a huge push to come up with a millennial product, and a lot of people see skill-based games as the Holy Grail.

The Calculated Spin

SPIN GAMES PROVIDES HIGH-PERFORMING, turn-key technology, premium slot content, and “out of the box” innovations. It has a strong intellectual property portfolio including patents for the Roc Robust Online Client and MIG (Multiplayer Interactive Gaming), among other brands. Young acknowledges the potential for skill-based games, but tempers his enthusiasm. “The way we have designed this in the past is as a base game and a bonus component that is skill-based,” he says. “It’s always going to be, say, 85 percent return just on the slot-based game and the player has the opportunity to get perhaps 8 percent more, or zero, depending upon what happens in a given bonus round.” Young says the right-place, right-time adage of luck pertaining to slots can be altered and lead to bigger payouts via skill—but how big is that dynamic? “I think the skill-based players are going to represent a relatively small segment of the market,” he says. “Contrary to what a lot of other people think, I believe these will be niche products initially, and then they may grow depending upon their success. This is an idea in which you will have to crawl before you walk.” Young addresses the millennial market from a different perspective than many others. “We are bullish on the interactive side of gaming, like changing the platform the millennials play on,” he says. “You can play bingo on your own phone on property.” Its Rapid Products line, which will be showcased at G2E, addresses that.

The Contrarian View

MIKE FIELDS RESPECTS THE SKILL-GAME MANIA, but he’s associated with video poker, which enjoys a head start of perhaps four decades on today’s products. “Video poker is the original skill-based game,” says Fields, executive vice president of Las-Vegas based Action Gaming/Video Poker.com. “It is the only game on the casino floor where the price of the game is shown and the player knows whether he is getting a good gamble or not. It’s a challenge to make the decisions on what to throw away, what to hold, whether to go for four of a kind, etc. “It has a proven following and has cracked the code of how you make a skill game fun, entertaining and still profitable enough for casinos to be willing to put on the floor.” Action Gaming is a game designer and is associated with approximately 70 products on Video Poker.com Fields has enjoyed an interesting journey with the game. He joined the video poker division at IGT in 2001, and left four years later to help direct a company that invents games IGT distributes around the world. One of the company’s major success stories has been Ultimate X. It developed a cult following both on the company website and by way of a training tool, he indicates. Website members can practice the game at home with the help of a device that educates them about playing the game. They can apply those pointers in real-life action. 12 | G2E Preview 2016

Spin Games Founder Kent Young

“Anything in which you can put the gambler into a decisionmaking role is smart,” he asserts, “yet the code has not yet been cracked on how to blend the gambling element with the skill element, from the games I have seen. “Take Pac Man, for example, a game I have loved for a long time. The route to get through the first level is one thing. When the skill component comes in, like a wheel spin, it’s a different rhythm from the rest of the game. For me, it’s like having a song in which countryand-western is the verse and the opera is the chorus. It’s jarring. “The gaming experience has to be fluid, not require a lot of stops and starts. The players need to feel they can get in a groove, like the guy in the bar playing video poker. He is mesmerized seeing the five cards, making his decision and seeing how his knowledge of the game impacted the outcome.” Fields believes two major challenges for the skill-game movement concern whether the games generate enough money to remain on floors and whether they can avoid being trendy.

Hope for Hybrids

CALIFORNIA-BASED GAMBLIT GAMING OFFERS developers a chance to set up a new game on its platform or simply insert gambling mechanics into an existing video game. It also can provide game titles to operators. The skill-games discussion centers not only on their comparison to random-percentage payouts. It encapsulates a gaming version of the generation gap. Gamblit CEO Eric Meyerhofer expects more products to address the needs of players in their mid 40s. He believes that Gamblit, which has progressed from think-tank stage to presenting games in recent years, is well positioned to serve it. “We provide a platform construct that allows any video games to plug into a regulated back end in the system,” he says. “This involves adding some kind of wagering element to the game, that is clearly understood, but does not distort the fundamental game mechanic that people already love.” Meyerhofer says balancing the interests of skilled players and the interest of the casino, while still complying with payout regulations, comes down to one key concept. “In a nutshell, it’s hybrid games,” he says. “Hybrid games blend skill and chance, so even though skilled players can have an edge, you can’t always guarantee you will be the best at something. Poker is a hybrid game, because skill definitely is a major factor if not the dominant factor in that game, but you have to have the cards to consistently win at that game, and those are randomized.” Meyerhofer predicts strong industry support for a couple of Gamblit’s upcoming electronic card games, Gamblit Poker and Cannonbeard’s Treasure, expected to be rolled out later this year. “We believe that these games will find their place on a certain percentage of the floor as this will provide the needed drive for the industry to grow, because you can’t expect the younger players to just start liking things they have no context for, and people aren’t getting any younger,” Meyerhofer asserts. “The internet and digital age has irrevocably changed every industry it has touched, and now it is affecting casinos.”

t was a seminal moment in the move toward legal sports betting in the United States when NBA Commissioner Adam Silver published an op-ed in the New York Times last year arguing that it was time to consider legalization. But Silver’s predecessor David Stern, had begun thinking about sports betting and its consequences to professional and amateur sports. Stern was a truly transformative figure in sports, building the NBA into a major brand, expanding into new 16 | G2E Preview 2016

jurisdictions that broadened the NBA’s appeal, and involving the players in decisions that affected the future of the league. Stern appears for the first time at a gaming conference at this year’s G2E to explain his thought process in his NBA tenure, the attitude of the owners of professional sports franchises toward the league and possible sports betting, and how to structure a legalization campaign that would have the best chance of success. More than a transaction. A connection. The real moment of truth on the casino floor is when a player gives you his money. Only he doesn’t actually hand it to you. He hands it to us. From the moment that currency touches our bill validator, we are responsible for providing an effortless, accurate transfer of cash into play. We accept your customer’s wager with reliable grace and efficiency, just the way you would personally. We are your representative on your casino floor. This philosophy has earned JCM its position as the industry leader, with more bill validators and printers in play than all other brands combined. And now we will show you how a simple buy-in can lead to a level of player engagement that goes beyond the transaction. We’ll help you make connections.

ristocrat has developed a new video gaming category specifically designed to engage the baccarat player. “Games of Fortune” includes two game titles in its initial release. The first, Multiline Baccarat, has a stronger slot-type feel; while the second, Baccarat 88, has a more traditional baccarat feel. Transitioning a table game into the slot world, Aristocrat employed baccarat and slot experts to ensure the important features of both types of games were incorporated. The development team worked to introduce new features that would appeal to more traditional slot players. Bringing baccarat into the slot space adds speed of play and more excitement for players. Games of Fortune Multiline Baccarat and Baccarat 88 gives the player many exciting features, including banker and player progressives, and a large mystery jackpot. 20 | G2E Preview 2016

The Multiline Baccarat title offers a lower volatility than most slot games, but it is more volatile than live baccarat. Baccarat 88 has a more volatile style of play. Multiline Baccarat allows the player to play 239 hands of baccarat at the same time, while giving them the fun and excitement of being able to enter two different bonus pay tables. Within one of the bonus pay tables, the player can be awarded wheel spins where they receive either credit prizes or a progressive jackpot. Baccarat 88 provides the player the opportunity to play three hands of baccarat at the same time while having the opportunity to earn multipliers up to 88X on their winning hands. Games of Fortune titles are housed in Aristocrat’s Arc Single cabinet, which incorporates industry-leading ergonomic design, upgraded graphics capabilities and 5.1 stereo surround sound to provide a comfortable and engaging gaming experience.

Easitrax Web and its new Maintenance Alerts feature. Easitrax Web is a recent software extension of Easitrax Soft Count, an RFID-based cash management system that is now installed in more than 200,000 games worldwide. Like Easitrax Soft Count, Easitrax Web works by gathering data from multiple SC note acceptors and funneling that information into a secure remote database that can be accessed to track revenues and analyze slot performance. And because cash boxes are no longer tied to specific machines, operators can save 20-30 seconds per cashbox on every drop—routinely resulting in a return on investment in less than one year. What differentiates Easitrax Web from the standard Soft Count package is that it provides even more flexibility and control to operators, leading to a quick payback. The data it collects can still be used to streamline the drop process, facilitate asset evaluations and conduct

Kai Relate

ACRES 4.0 • BOOTH 2030 AT G2E, ACRES WILL INTRODUCE RELATE, an expansion of Kai’s capabilities that drives profitable real-time interactions between employees and players. Kai can now dispatch employees to welcome new arrivals, deliver a favorite drink even before the customer asks, celebrate achievements and stay in touch with player needs and emotions. Kai automatically senses, through existing player tracking systems, which players should be challenged to step up to a new tier level and when a player’s interest is flagging. Kai prioritizes, according to potential worth and player preference, the order and manner in which players are served during busy times. Kai even measures labor utilization on each hour of each shift, to recommend more efficient future staffing levels. Kai also understands individual player worth, personality, history and desire. Kai learns, without human intervention, exactly how to serve each player to maximum benefit. Kai creates an electronic bridge between employees and customers, allowing instant communication through text or voice conversations. Kai does all this without burdening customers with app downloads or learning. Customers simply text or talk, exactly as they do now with friends and family. Kai isolates hosts and service personnel from actual customer contact details. Employees simply click on a customer name to call, text or communicate, without ever seeing the customer’s true contact details. Managers have full access to each conversation. Customers communicate through a single dedicated phone number, and Kai automatically routes the call to the most appropriate employee. Kai eliminates radios and works with any system and across all machines, requires minimal IT support and usually installs in less than a dozen hours. Training is accomplished in minutes. Kai operates on the casino’s virtual server or through the cloud.

preventative maintenance programs. Easitrax Web simply makes it easier to import that data, and convert it into customizable reports, from anywhere in the world with secure intranet access. It also has the functionality to grant security levels. Now, CPI has released a new Maintenance Alerts feature for Easitrax Web that allows operators to set performance thresholds and receive automated notifications based upon these critical metrics. This will help operators save time and interpret data so problems can be identified and prevented before they even occur. By continually expanding the functionality of Easitrax, CPI continues to empower its customers with new ways to become more profitable and efficient. To learn more, visit CranePI.com or speak with a CPI representative at booth 1850 at G2E.

Orion Cabinet AGS • BOOTH 1253

A premium, competitive hardware with its unique, eye-catching Orion

GS introduces its first foray into

game cabinet. Orion features a first-ofits-kind emotive lighting design that captures the attention of players like no other before. At the heart of Orion is a 42-inch HD monitor set in portrait mode, but what truly sets it apart is the solid ring of LCD lights that surround the monitor. This emotive lighting “ring” resembles a visually stunning eclipse, and when placed side-by-side creates a billboard that leads players into AGS’ topperforming, dynamic game content. The ring of lights encompasses the main cabinet and reflects against the clean, chrome material, making the cabinets appear larger. Coupled with Orion’s low-profile design, casino operators can offer compelling sightlines across their casino floors. Options for a flushmount or low-profile, LCD button deck and the latest HD audio with a self-contained subwoofer amplify the cabinet’s submersing design and further entice players into AGS’ engaging game content. Black glass on the button deck draws players in, and its ergonomic features and large, easy-to-use player interface keep

players comfortable for longer time on device. The sleek LCD button deck also allows for incredibly flexible bet configurations to match each operator’s unique needs. Orion is a design of the future that resembles one solid piece when placed in banks for an unforgettable, monolithic presence. Stealthily engineered with an upper and lower door, easily accessible switches and internal lighting, Orion was built for exceptionally easy servicing. Its self-contained logic and use of a common platform also eliminate the need for multiple servers. Three new titles debuted on Orion will expose players to AGS’ game content—Fire Wolf II, Fu Nan Fu Nu and Wolf Queen. Built with the core gambler in mind, these games feature AGS’ popular PowerXStream pay evaluation method in a three-by-five reel configuration within the base game.

restaurant, F&B and retail environments, is a progressive soluA tion that enables organizations to reach guests virtually anywhere on gilysys InfoGenesis Flex, a mobile POS for service staff in

property. Not your ordinary consumer tablets, these are the first commercial-grade tablets certified for use in hospitality, offering unprecedented reliability and performance over the previous generation’s mobile POS. Meeting military standards for extreme situations, Agilysys InfoGenesis Flex offers the first drop-resistant and shock-resistant POS tablet with a longer battery life and broader temperature tolerances. These progressive POS devices simplify guest service, delivering an experience that’s ideal for poolside, conventions, kiosks, beverage carts, treatment rooms and much more. As the industry’s only POS tablet that is drop- and shock-resistant, InfoGenesis Flex reduces the potential for catastrophic damage, keeping devices in service longer and making for a quick return on investment. These portables include an ultra-long battery life to keep transactions flowing throughout an entire six- or eight-hour shift rather than switching to a different device mid-shift. Broad temperature tolerances provide tremendous flexibility to use in a wide range of outdoor environments, continuing to capture guest wallet share where other tablets may shut down.

In point of fact, recent studies of the InfoGenesis Flex mobile POS tablet found that it not only performs reliably in more challenging environments, but it also improves operational efficiency and guest service: • Servers support 30-50 percent more guests in the same time period than they would without InfoGenesis Flex tablets. • Increased guest spending of 25-60 percent. Guests place orders more frequently as a result of servers being more accessible. • Increased pool F&B revenue by 76 percent as a result of reduced order cycle times and increased attention to guests. • Reduced credit card losses as a result of card problems experienced without the InfoGenesis Flex offline capabilities and electronic payment acceptance.

Everi Cares Giving Module EVERI HOLDINGS • BOOTH 1116

Everi Cares Giving T heModule makes social

consciousness a priority with meaningful gaming voucher redemption. Convenient and easy to use, Everi Cares Giving Module creates a unique opportunity for patrons to make charitable donations while also reducing coin-handling on the casino floor. When a gaming voucher is inserted and accepted into an Everi full-service kiosk on the company’s UXC/UIM platform, patrons are then prompted through a series of screens to donate to select charities from a fully vetted list made available to casinos. The casino operator will decide on up to four selected charities to be displayed on the kiosk interface, and casinos can change the displayed charities at predetermined intervals. Players can learn more about the charitable organizations by simply touching the appropriate button on the screen for a brief description of the charity’s mission. Once patrons select a charity, they are presented with a screen where they can select how much of the gaming voucher amount they would like to donate. Once determined, patrons will confirm the donation and are presented with a receipt of the transaction to keep for their records. Receipts are only printed when a donation meets or exceeds the donation receipt threshold set by the casino. The patron receipt will include the charity’s name and EIN, as well as the donation amount. With the Everi Cares Giving Module, casinos can significantly reduce coin-handling expenses and escheatment of abandoned gaming vouchers. The module also helps casinos enhance corporate responsibility programs and provides a seamless method to give back to their communities. In addition, a mutually beneficial relationship that promotes social awareness and encourages patron interaction is instantly created between the casinos and the charities. The Everi Cares Giving Module is an innovative way to allow casino patrons to make charitable donations through an intuitive interface that walks them step-by-step through the process. Gaming, Inc. is placing K onami a focus on new player reward

methods and real-time dashboard analytics during this year’s G2E. Its award-winning Synkros casino management system is introducing a number of leading advancements to empower casino operators with the latest systems tools to benefit their business and their customers. One of the newest enhancements is the industry’s top systems dashboard analytics interface available—Synkros Dashboards. Capturing a wealth of data across complex gaming and non-gaming operations, Synkros Dashboards provide a visual breakdown of guest activity from macro trends to the smallest details of individual spend in order to power actionable intelligence across all areas of business, and will be available to Synkros customers in late 2016. Konami’s SYNKdot mobile application similarly leverages Synkros’ ecosystem of data and delivers it as an expectation-based mobile interface directly to permissioned administrators’ smartphones. It provides a simple visual interface for operators to view realtime data on how the casino is performing based on customizable parameters (KPIs) for the property as a whole and broken down into differing specialty segments. In a single glance, SYNKdot gives a breakdown of the casino’s current status through back-end performance indicators and metrics without requiring desktop access. In terms of the powerful

Synkros marketing suite, Synkros Offers Management will now allow players to select from multiple available bonus awards—such as comp vouchers, free play, drawing tickets, tournament entries, and extra point prizes—and receive personalized notification across a variety of touch points including kiosk machines, SMS, email, direct mail and EGM displays. This latest update gives operators the flexibility and control to maximize marketing promotions, with seamless, real-time tracking across their player base. Another marketing enhancement viewable at G2E is player ondemand multi-game tournaments. Synkros’ system-delivered TrueTime Tournaments has long given players the benefit of accessing ondemand tournament entries at any enabled video slot machine, and now they also have the opportunity to select from multiple available game themes. Any Synkros property with True-Time Tournaments has full access to Konami’s suite of on-demand tournament themes.

GT’s Cardless Connect mobile technology enables players to connect to an electronic gaming machine (EGM) with their smartphone and seamlessly transfer funds from a mobile gaming wallet to and from the machine. The unique application features a revolutionary player tracking solution that modernizes the casino floor, and offers operators a solution that reduces cash and paper transactions while offering players a seamless experience. Cardless Connect highlights IGT’s most recent milestone in innovation. Designed to deliver a convenient and user-friendly experience, the Cardless Connect technology is embedded into the casino’s mobile application. By leveraging Cardless Connect, players no longer need to carry a physical card or spend time replacing lost or forgotten loyalty cards. Instead of inserting a card into the card reader, players can access Cardless Connect on the casino’s mobile app by tapping their smartphone on the EGM card reader. In addition, the technology enables cashless gaming by providing access to a gaming wallet, associated with an operator. The secure, third-party audited solution allows players to select

how much credit they wish to transfer from their player account. Player funds are hosted in IGT’s EZ Pay, a complete ticketing and scalable cashless systems solution. When credit is transferred using the casino mobile app, it immediately appears on the select EGM for game play. When game play is complete, the player’s new credit balance is displayed in real time, and can be transfered back into the player’s account. Players can add funds to their account with Cardless Connect by inserting cash or tickets into any EGM. Cardless Connect is compatible with iOS and Android, and can be used in approved jurisdictions. The innovative mobile technology serves as a cashless solution that is developed to engage a wide player demographic. The unique application is also designed to cater to a younger demographic, who use their smartphones for a wide range of activities including payment and gaming. In terms of operators, the mobile solution can help further solidify relationships with existing customers while providing the opportunity to establish relationships with new guests. In addition, Cardless Connect is designed to increase player interaction, enrich the value of the property’s brand and extend usability of its mobile application.

changed the landscape of promotional kiosk software, is no different. Being that MGT already interfaces to all major player tacking systems, they will now begin providing an open API to third parties to access account information, available promotions, club tier status and contest status, and to award prizes and send personal notifications of promotion eligibility with expiration dates. A distinction to make when comparing MGT’s open API to other competing developers is that the MGT open API will help casino operators by allowing them to continue to use their existing technolo30 | G2E Preview 2016

gies and work with their favorite mobile app, web and email/SMS provider. Eventually, this service will also include the ability to play a promotional game on a mobile device and claim the prize at a casino in one of three ways: at the kiosk; on the casino website by logging into the casino’s public Wi-Fi; and a casino mobile app using a geo-fence. The Electronic Drawings module has been a key advantage for casino operators using the MGT software to eliminate paper drawing tickets. Moving forward, MGT is adding more convenience for the casino guest by allowing them to see entry balances and check into these electronic drawings from their mobile devices when located in the casino. big data

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The Golden Rule HOW DATA CAN IMPROVE THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE AT SPORTING EVENTS by Andrew Cardno

T

he casino industry presents complex operational business challenges, but they are not unique to gaming. Big data challenges from gaming, and the operational intelligence solutions to address them, are directly applicable in other industries. In this article, we apply our gaming knowledge to the sports entertainment industry.

All the Data From All the Places n gaming, the central problem is that data is siloed across too many separate systems—slot machine data, player activity, machine and player performance, guest contact information, etc. It turns out this problem is neither unique nor the hardest to solve. In gaming, the first task is to combine slot data with player data—a powerful combination that yields enormous amounts of information. Coupled with analytics, this information generates insights into how to optimize the gaming floor to increase profitability. In casinos attached to hotels and resorts, operators may want to ingest reservation and stay information and additional pointof-sale data to better identify their guests’ activity across the entire property. Solutions exist for that as well, to increase the level of customer service these properties can deliver with an accurate view of what their guests are doing at any given time. The same idea can be applied to the entertainment complex business—think stadiums and arenas. The problems are more complex in some ways, primarily because venue operators don’t own the third-party ticketing systems—they need to know who buys tickets to fill seats. Further, those ticketing systems (we won’t even touch third-party resellers) don’t provide seat-holder profiles, making available only the email address and other basic information captured during checkout. And given that entertainment is a social experience, we can’t say with certainty whether the wife bought concert tickets for date night with her spouse or for her teenage daughters, if the season ticket holder will

I

32 | G2E Preview 2016

invite his dad or his best friend, or who will occupy each seat in a large group sale. For sports and entertainment venues, identifying the real fans (and subsequently, knowing who to target with promotions) is a massive undertaking. Fans are the ones who visit the website, watch the games on TV, subscribe to the YouTube channel, follow players on Twitter, and like the team’s Facebook page. Properly identifying them and linking the data with what what they do once they’re at the game—buying team merchandise at the gift shop or beer at the concessions stand—and putting the pieces together to provide an accurate 360-degree view of each fan is a complex and costly task. A Golden Customer Record he golden record isn’t a new concept in data management, yet it is a largely unsolved one. And as the sports industry adds more systems to run their businesses, their silos multiply, creating a moving target for the golden record build. Traditional data warehouse projects are failing as they struggle to keep up with the constantly evolving data universe. In many ways, watching operators see their data in one (golden) place is like watching people after the lights go on in a dark room. This firsthand experience makes it easy to see how they can dramatically improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their sales and marketing process by accurately targeting the right people to fill their seats. The golden record is the data glue that holds the organization together without impacting the source systems required for operations. It eliminates multiple records that actually turn out to be one fan by linking data from disparate systems, eliminating duplication and intelligently matching to build a single, accurate record. Creating a golden record requires extremely complex computer methods that apply artificial intelligence to solve an AI-complete problem. The solution figures out what data fit together, deducing what is and what is not a good match,

T

and then tying all the good data together. The operative word here is “good,” because without good, clean data, analytics simply can’t deliver the operational intelligence that big data aims to. Optimize, Optimize, Optimize hat are the implications, then, for stadiums, teams, or any other business that successfully implements a golden record database? Again, we look to what casinos do daily, and identify the tools that have enabled their sales and marketing teams to understand data and optimize profits. With a view into consolidated data from disparate systems (multiple CRM records, all purchase transactions, all emails tied to purchases) and a layer of analytics and reporting, sports teams and stadiums would know who their real fans are. With accurate data and well-defined audiences, they gain informed insights they can use to engage and monetize their fans. The marketers who run promotions to drive fan engagement and ticket sales can easily segment as casino marketers have been doing for years. And using marketing intelligence and automation solutions, they can test campaigns in advance to guarantee the highest ROI, launch them quickly, monitor audience response in real time (did they buy the ticket, take advantage of discounted group pricing, upgrade to a season pass?), and then measure the return on marketing spend (how many tickets were sold, and at what price?). In gaming, the stakes have always been high. With more entertainment options, and new ways to watch the game without buying a ticket, comes increased pressure for sports teams to fill seats. By applying the expertise learned from gaming, software and technology vendors who customize their gaming solutions for sports will be positioned to serve this lucrative market.

The Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers provides services to all members—large and small

by Roger Gros

Most associations get their starts when confronted with an issue that threatens the entire group. That was certainly true of the Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers (AGEM). In 2000, there was talk that the Nevada legislature was considering a tax on gaming devices, so the big boys at the time—IGT, Bally, WMS and Aristocrat—joined forces. The proposal never materialized, but AGEM had been born. At that point, associations can go either way, reverting to a loose alliance that monitors possible problems, or growing to become a true service organization to their particular industry. AGEM chose the latter path. But even then, the first few years produced spotty success, mostly centered on the confusion of two major trade shows. The established World Gaming Congress was

usurped by the upstart Global Gaming Expo, supported by both the American Gaming Association and AGEM. But then, seven years ago, Tom Jingoli, then a senior vice president with Konami, was elected president. Jingoli’s election roughly coincided with the arrival of Marcus Prater, a former marketing executive at Bally, who became executive director. Together, the two have grown AGEM impressively over the years. Jingoli characteristically rejects that praise. “It really is a collective organization; it’s a group effort,” he says. “You’re only as good as your membership and your constituents.” Jingoli, now chief administrative officer at Konami, says he only intended to stay on for a full term (after filling a one-year vacancy left by the previous president), but decided to stay on due to industry volatility. “With all the consolidations that were going on in the industry, a lot of the board members retired,” he says, “so, I just felt at the time, it was probably not the right time for me to step down.” Under Jingoli’s term, AGEM has grown from 32 members, mostly in the U.S., to 154 located in all corners of the world, 22 countries in all. Jingoli says AGEM is anchored by the founding large slot manufacturers, but the strength of the organization is its diversity.

“We’ve always believed to be a true trade association, you have to have representation from the entire sector,” he says. “So, when you look at our business, it’s the chair company. It’s the sign company. It’s the harness company. So, we have a lot of those companies that are a part of our constituency. And when we talk about a trade show, we’re not just talking about Sci Games, or IGT, or Konami. We’re talking about some of the other companies that provide a lot of the other equipment that goes into the machines, or associated equipment that surrounds them. We’ve done a really, really good job of getting everybody involved in the segment.” Jingoli says that even though the large slot companies steer the ship, there is much agreement among the members on the direction of AGEM. “It’s interesting to see, because in most cases, what’s good for the large slot manufacturers has trickle-down effect throughout and resonates through our association,” he says. “So, I can’t think of a time where we really haven’t been aligned on certain things. It’s a rarity. And I really give Marcus credit for that.”

UP SCOPE nternational expansion was so important to AGEM that it hired another director, Tracy Cohen, the marketing VP for TCSJohnHuxley. “When we started, we had ‘American’ as our description,” he says, “but it quickly became evident there were international issues that we needed to address.” AGEM has played a role in the legalization of gaming and machines in several countries, including Mexico, where the association has had a big impact. And the scope of the company has changed, as well, due to the recent consolidation. Both IGT and Scientific Games are major players in the lottery business, and Jingoli says that is a true growth area. “(Major lottery supplier) Intralot is also a member, so we really have that ground covered,” he says. “And that brings up another benefit of the association. Certainly, if something comes up in the lottery space, or table game space—if you take Konami, for example, we don’t have lottery or table games—it affects our other members. It’s not what’s good for Konami, or what’s good for Scientific Games; it’s what’s good for the whole industry. “Several years ago, Marcus developed an associate member group. And there are certain things that might affect them that don’t occur to us in the slot world. So they have a voice now, and they can escalate issues up to us, and ask us to take some kind of action.

I

And if it’s something we can get behind and help, we’re happy to do that.”

AMERICAN ALLIANCE

A

GEM has normally had a cooperative relationship with the American Gaming Association, which, along with Reed Exhibitions, owns Global Gaming Expo. “(AGA President) Geoff Freeman has done a really good job since he’s come in; we have a very good working relationship with them,” Jingoli says. “We talk to them regularly. We invite Geoff at least once a year to speak to our group at our board meeting to explain things that are going on with the AGA. “And we’ve tried to tackle some things that clearly affect both of our memberships. Obviously, they have a different charter than we do, but there have been some things—daily fantasy sports, internet gaming and some other things—where we’ve had common ground. The biggest thing is obviously legal gambling, and some of the proliferation of that is certainly something that affects not only slot manufacturers, but in fact our customers and operators as well that are members of the AGA. “So, we’re constantly looking at things where Connie Jones, Director of the two organizations can work together. Responsible Gaming, AGEM Because, as you know, if you take the big slot companies, CEOs like Steve Sutherland, Gavin Isaacs, Jamie Odell and others are on the board. They don’t come to the AGEM meetings, but they have representatives that sit on our board.” But there are important differences, says Jingoli. “We’re centered more on state issues,” he says. “Not saying that the AGA doesn’t, but they’re looking more on a federal level. For example, we’ve had issues that came up in Kansas years ago. We met with the gaming regulators there, on a registration issue where some Marcus Prater, Executive of our members were required to get a gaming Director, AGEM license by doing less than a half percent of their business there, where in most cases it’s 5 percent or above. “So, we try and drill down more on the stateby-state level, and how it affects that. As an organization, we’ve been very successful at that. Massachusetts is a good example—a new state that came online, when the commonwealth had all kinds of questions, and they reached out to us. We hired educated legal representatives and lobbyists, explained how our organization works and who we are. It helped speed the process.” Sometimes, however, the interests of the two Tracy Cohen, Director, organizations diverge. For example, the introInternational, AGEM, and duction of slots/VLTs at bars and restaurants in Vice President Marketing, TCSJohnHuxley

Casino Entertainment Awards Event Returns During G2E

The 2016 Casino Entertainment Awards, the only awards honoring outstanding artists, executives and venues in the casino entertainment industry, will be held on Wednesday, September 28 at Vinyl, the award-winning nightclub at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas. The CEA is a don’tmiss event at G2E, a rollicking time with surprises all night. Sponsored by the Global Gaming Expo (G2E) and the American Gaming Association (AGA), the Casino Entertainment Awards are the ultimate honor for anyone involved with entertainment in the gaming industry. Last year, the legendary Jerry Lewis received the Lifetime Achievement Award. This year, songstress Brenda Lee takes the top award. Lee has been a superstar since childhood, releasing her first single when she was only 11 years old, sharing the stage of the Grand Ole Opry with Elvis Presley at 12, and watching the Beatles open for her on tour in Europe before she turned 20. But few remember her connection to the casino industry. She celebrated her 12th birthday at the Flamingo in 1956 when she was part of the Christmasthemed revue. The 70-year-old Lee only does about 20 shows a year now, but Las Vegas is still one of her major stops. Just recently she appeared at the Golden Nugget, and she will return next year to perform at the kitschy Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend. Tom Cantone is a legendary entertainment director who broke all the rules in Atlantic City, booking such acts as Eddie Murphy, Cher and George Carlin, transforming the casino entertainment business. In the last 20 years at Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, he has brought almost every superstar to southeastern Connecticut. Cantone, the author of Book ‘Em: The Man Who Revolutionized Casino Entertainment, will receive the “Entertainment Executive of the Year” award. Other award categories include: • Independent Casino Talent Buyer of the Year • Casino Booking Agent of the Year • Casino Showroom/Theater of the Year • Casino Arena/Amphitheater of the Year • Casino Entertainment Executive of the Year • Casino Comedian of the Year • Casino Musical Artist of the Year • Casino Entertainer of the Year

several states like South Dakota and Illinois is good for slot manufacturers but bad for existing casinos. In that case, Jingoli says AGEM does not take an active role. “If it’s a legal market, where slot machines, gaming devices or VLTs are allowed, at the end of the day, we’re going to take that phone call if somebody calls to buy a machine,” he says. He references California, where the Nevada gaming industry actively opposed the expansion of tribal gaming. “Slot manufacturers took a back seat on that, and just let it play out, and when it became legal, we started selling to the tribes. We try to let the process play out. We’re not going to hire lobbyists to make it happen, but we’re also not going to oppose it.”

“When we started, we had ‘American’ as our description. but it quickly became evident there were international issues that we needed to address.” —AGEM President Tom Jingoli RAISING THE PROFILE ne of the purposes of AGEM is to raise the visibility of and respect for the industry of gaming suppliers. One of the ways AGEM has done this was to hire Connie Jones as director of responsible gaming. Jones had previously worked in a similar position for IGT, focused on how gaming is entertainment and not a harmful activity for those who take part. Jingoli says Jones was a logical addition a couple of years ago. “We’ve been a main organizer of the AGEM/JCM golf tournament for the past dozen years, which is a major contributor to the National Center for Responsible Gaming,” he says. “So our commitment to responsible gaming is longstanding. When Connie became available, it made absolute sense. We sponsor lots of conferences and events connected to responsible gaming, and often we don’t have representation there. And obviously, she’s one of the foremost authorities in that space.” Jingoli says the growth of AGEM might have reached its peak. “I don’t know how much more growth we have left out there,” he says. “If there’s somebody who’s not a member, Marcus will find them. “But we’re set up financially—we don’t have millions and millions of dollars, but we have a good membership dues structure. Obviously, we’re involved with the AGA and Reed, with the G2E shows, which gives us some funding for our organization. But I think as an organization, we’re set up and structured well to handle anything that’s on our home soil or foreign soil. “And I think, as a trade association, that’s something to be proud of.”

GLOBAL GAMING WOMEN TAKES NEXT STEP AT G2E 2016

T

Kick Up Your Heels, the charity event for Global Gaming Women, will be held on Wednesday, September 28

he reorganization of Global Gaming Women into its own self-sustaining organization occurred earlier this year, and G2E will be something of a coming-out party for the group. And if there’s one word that could describe the GGW sessions at G2E 2016, it would have to be “power.” Under the leadership of Virginia McDowell, the former CEO of Isle of Capri, and a powerful board of directors, GGW is poised to become a transformative organization for the gaming industry. But McDowell believes that can only happen when GGW broadens its membership and impact beyond just women. “We’ve got the message out pretty well to women, now we have to get the buy in from male executives at all levels and disciplines in the industry,” she says. To start that process, the GGW program at G2E is dynamic and all-inclusive, going far beyond the “glass ceiling” discussions of the past. It starts with the keynote speaker on Monday, September 26. In “The Power of Being Fearless,” Frances Townsend, executive vice president for worldwide government, legal and business affairs at MacAndrews and Forbes Incorporated, will explain how attitude is everything. Townsend was former assistant to President George W. Bush for homeland 48 | G2E Preview 2016

security and counterterrorism and chairwoman of the Homeland Security Council. She also served as deputy national security advisor for combating terrorism from May 2003 to May 2004. Townsend spent 13 years at the U.S. Department of Justice under the administrations of President George H. W. Bush, President Bill Clinton and President George W. Bush. The “Power” sessions launch at 10 a.m. on Monday, with dynamic presentations by many movers and shakers in the gaming industry and beyond. Ann Simmons Nicholson, the presenter that had one of the highest-ranking feedback scores at G2E 2015, will kick it off with the “Power of Your Brand.” Nicholson asks the question “How good are you?” When asked that question, many women downplay or dismiss their exceptional traits. Statistically, three out of four thoughts a woman has about herself are negative. The awareness of this internal dialogue and how to switch it to a positive, not

ego-driven, thought will be an outcome of this session. “The Power of Presentation” features Jennifer Ehlen, CEO of Prosper Institute, and managing partner of PWE Startup Accelerator, along with Julia Carcamo, of J Carcamo & Associates, a senior marketing leader, blogger and speaker. “The Power of Resiliency” features a presentation by Kim Sinatra, executive vice president, general counsel and secretary for Wynn Resorts, who will explain how to “power” through obstacles. Jane Bokunewicz, an instructor and assistant professor at Richard Stockton College, will present “The Power of Persuasion,” which will provide an overview of current research regarding gender differences in persuasion and communication styles. The “Power Panel: Up Close and Personal” brings together McDowell with panelists Staci Columbo Alonso, senior VP and chief marketing officer, Stations Casino; Claudia Winkler, president, G.H.I. Solutions, Inc.; Susan Cartwright, VP, marketing and corporate communications, Scientific Games; and Karla ParezLarragoite, national director of gaming, Cintas, to talk about the power of philanthropy, the power of technology, the power of negotiating, and the power of dressing for success. And at the end of the day on Monday, Christie Eickelman, vice president of marketing, Gaming Laboratories International, and Tina Kilmer, vice president, product compliance, Scientific Games, will conduct a wide-open session to discuss the positive outcomes and takeaways from the day, and the best ways to move forward with all the valuable things learned during the day. But that’s not all for GGW. The annual “Kick Up Your Heels” fundraiser will be held on Wednesday, September 28, at 6 p.m. at a venue to be announced. And on Thursday morning, the annual GGW Lean In Breakfast with rapid-fire moderators and small networking groups will be held in the Casanova Ballroom at the Sands Expo Center. To learn more about any GGW program at G2E and to register, visit the GGW website at globalgamingwomen.org.

g2e igaming congress

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Expanding iGaming THIS YEAR’S iGAMING CONGRESS AT G2E SHOWS HOW DIVERSE AND BROAD THE FIELD HAS BECOME

F

or the past seven years, G2E has presented the iGaming Congress, one of the leading sources of information about online gaming in the U.S. In that time, iGaming has become legal in three U.S. states, with the market growing slowly but surely. At this year’s G2E iGaming Congress, you will surely hear about this expansion and possible legalization of iGaming in other U.S. states and jurisdictions. But you’ll also hear about the daily fantasy sports (DFS) controversies across the country, and also about the introduction of eSports into the gaming landscape and what it could mean for casino resorts. But first, the iGaming Congress on Monday, September 26, will present a litany of sessions that will examine the state of the industry. Gathering Storm: Future of iGaming in the U.S. 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Review the activity of iGaming in the states where it’s legal or where legislation is pending, and explore what the future may hold. • Understand how identity, payment and geolocation technologies have improved; • Learn how to capitalize on this growing segment; and, • Discuss potential paths to advance legalization. Global Evolution in iGaming Regulation 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Experts will address the evolving regulatory 50 | G2E Preview 2016

models for iGaming in Europe, Australia, Latin America and more. • Discover the latest developments in iGaming regulation; • Learn about penalty boxes and gray-area operations; and, • Explore why regulations are changing worldwide. Making the Market: Players, Participation, Promotions, Part 1 1:45 p.m. - 2:45 p.m. The first of this two-part session will explore the intersection of iGaming with brick-and-mortar casinos, marketing opportunities and intelligence about iGaming customers to make the most of the available market. • Understand the intersection of iGaming with brick-and-mortar casinos; • Discuss iGaming player demographics, how they’re being acquired and at what cost; and, • Explore the status of affiliates and what that means to online casinos. Making the Market: Players, Participation, Promotions, Part 2 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The second of this two-part session will dive more deeply into iGaming marketing,

promotions and player behaviors. • Explore what advertising method is most effective; • Discover what promotions deliver the strongest ROI; and, • Consider the digital devices players use and their impacts—with particular emphasis on the role of mobile. Mobile Sports Betting: U.S. and Around the World 4:15 p.m. - 5:15 p.m. A significant portion of iGaming revenue around the world comes from sports betting. Review its current impact and what the future holds for this growing market. • Understand the market and growth opportunity for mobile sports betting; • Learn the differentiating aspects of mobile’s success; and, • Discuss what types of wagering have generated the largest consumer demand. During the main conference at G2E, eSports will take center stage when experts gather to discuss what it means when “eSports and Casinos: The Coming Collision” convenes on Wednesday, September 28 at 1:30 p.m. Learn about the size of the industry, its demographics and how casinos can take advantage of this fast-growing segment, whether through events, tournaments or actual betting on eSports teams. Hear about the experience of casinos that have already dipped their toes into the eSports water, and what the potential of this growing market could be. For DFS, the controversy has shed positive light on the drive for legal sports betting by demonstrating the popularity of the activity and the difficulty in determining who is playing and winning. And of course, there is the debate about whether eSports is gambling or not. Don’t miss this session. And finally, another offshoot of iGaming is the social casino boom. If your casino hasn’t set up a social casino and used it to market your land-based facilities, you may have already missed the boat. But when “Legislation Through Launch: Developing a Social Casino” is held on Tuesday, September 27 at 3:15 p.m., the movement will become clear. The iGaming Congress at G2E will continue to become a very important part of the G2E Education program, and it will expand and grow as the sector expands and grows in the various kinds of online interaction with players.

niforms are more than just ways to dress your employees. Uniforms create a brand, communicate a vibe and give your employees confidence to create the best level of customer service possible. Cintas has long been the go-to uniform company in the gaming industry, but its visibility is front and center each year at G2E when they present the Cintas UltraLounge Fashion Show.

This year center stage at the Integrated Resort Experience adjacent to the main G2E show floor, the UltraLounge Fashion Show will bring that 54 | G2E Preview 2016

much more excitement to the floor with lights, music and the flashy wardrobes that complement the classy casinos around the world. Two shows will be presented on Wednesday, September 28 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Joanna Cordero, director of design for Cintas, explains how the company approaches all relationships with casino resorts as a partnership: “We need to understand what the goals are of each of our clients,” she says. “To do that, we sit down with them to talk about their brand, their target market and their needs. Some of them want high-end uniforms that covey a

sophisticated style, others want an industrial look so their employees are seen as part of their brand.” This year, says Cordero, the Cintas collection will present a variety of uniforms that would be appropriate for many different kinds of resorts. “We’ll have several outfits in a resort nautical theme,” she says. “But they will all have powerful, brilliant colors—raspberries, peach, citron, cobalt blues—that will convey excitement and anticipation.” Some of the styles will be “retro,” recalling the ’60s era, pin-up girls and top hats. “We’re focusing a bit on the food-andbeverage area,” says Cordero. “These outfits will be appropriate for noodle houses, Irish pubs and breweries. We like to call it ‘urban hip.’” The uniforms are supposed to convey part of the brand, something that will be very experiential, she says. “These people are meant to project the meaning of the property, to be part of the journey.” Whatever you do at this year’s G2E, don’t miss the Cintas 2016 Ultra-Lounge Fashion Show to understand how your casino can capitalize on new uniforms, the latest styles and employee pride.

BRINGING EMPLOYEES AND PLAYERS TOGETHER

icketing technology has eliminated coins, lowered operating costs and dramatically reduced human interaction. It used to be that players regularly interacted with casino personnel to get change. Advice, instruction and friendship followed, resulting in loyal customers and increased spend. Today, only one player in nine has contact with a casino employee on any given visit—and that’s usually to move aside while ticket paper is replenished. Compared to those of the 20th century, modern casinos are quiet, impersonal and solitary experiences. It is no coincidence that gambling growth declined after ticket technology became prevalent. In 2009, Acres began developing mobile technology to restore meaningful, profitable interactions between players and employees. The resulting product—called Kai—is used by casinos around the world to dispatch gaming machine services. Benefits include dramatically reduced player wait times and more than $500 per machine in annual profit improvement. At G2E 2016, Acres will introduce an expansion of Kai’s capabilities that drives profitable real-time interactions between employees and players. Kai now can dispatch employees to welcome new arrivals, deliver a favorite drink even before the customer asks, celebrate achievements and stay in touch with player needs and emotions. Kai automatically senses, through existing player tracking systems, which players should be challenged to step up to a new tier level and when a player’s interest is 58 | G2E Preview 2016

flagging. Kai prioritizes, according to potential worth and player preference, the order and manner in which players are served during busy times. Kai even measures labor utilization on each hour of each shift, to recommend more efficient future staffing levels.

Kai also understands individual player worth, personality, history and desires. Kai learns, without human intervention, exactly how to serve each player to maximum benefit. Kai creates an electronic bridge between employees and customers, allowing instant communication through text or voice conversations. Kai does all this without burdening customers with app downloads or learning. Customers simply text or talk, exactly as they do now with

friends and family. Kai isolates hosts and service personnel from actual customer contact details. Employees simply click on a customer name to call, text or communicate, without ever seeing the customer’s true contact details. Managers have full access to each conversation. Customers communicate through a single dedicated phone number and Kai automatically routes the call to the most appropriate employee. Kai surveys players and employees to determine the efficacy of services and adapt to personal preferences. Kai eliminates radios and works with any system and across all machines. Kai requires minimal IT support and usually installs with less than a dozen hours of dedicated IT time. Training is accomplished in minutes. Kai operates on the casino’s virtual server or through the cloud. Acres has served the gaming industry for more than 40 years, and today its inventions and products are in use by virtually every casino on earth. Acres is dedicated to helping casinos achieve profit and growth by creating powerful and personal relationships with their players. For more information, visit acres4.com.

AGS

MEET THE “NEW” AGS

prime new booth location and dynamic new product category offerings will serve as an extraordinary backdrop for the “new” AGS at this year’s Global Gaming Expo in Booth 1253. As a leading supplier of Class II and Class III gaming machines, as well as specialty table products and social casino games, AGS has strategically delivered on its numerous acquisitions in 2015 to enhance its product library, expand its global footprint and successfully deliver competitive, high-performing products across its slots, tables and social casino product portfolios.

Slots Operators will see their floors in a new light with the star of the show—AGS’ striking new Orion cabinet. Ushering AGS into premium, competitive hardware, Orion features a first-of-itskind emotive lighting design that captures the attention of players like no other before. At the heart of Orion is a 42-inch HD monitor set in portrait mode and enveloped in a solid ring of emotive LCD lights reflecting against the clean, chrome base material to visually enlarge the cabinet. When placed in bank configurations, Orion’s design creates a virtual billboard that leads players into AGS’ top-performing, dynamic game content. Complementing AGS’ new Orion cabinet within the G2E booth will be the immersive, eye-catching core cabinet Icon. Featuring two flush-mounted 23-inch high-definition LCDs and an integrated digital sound system, the Icon cabinet delivers a compelling player experience. Its striking visual effects enhance AGS’ new suite of customized, premium game content and play mechanics, including three new core-gambler-style titles that will be on display: Fire Wolf II, Fu Cat and Queen of Wonderland Fierce Factor. The mammoth presence of AGS’ Big

Red cabinet featuring Colossal Diamonds also can’t be missed. This game remains one of the most highly consistent performers on casino floors, entertaining and attracting players across the country. With nearly 250 placements across 17 states, its three-reel, single payline and large, vibrant graphics feature simple, classic game play that awards appealing and frequent payouts thanks to its unique high-denomination betting structure. new white-label version of Bonus Spin, a customizable, virtual prize wheel that connects to a blackjack table or any other table game, including poker derivatives. Bonus Spin gives casinos the ability to offer a progressive top prize, a fixed top prize or an experience-based prize as the top award, allowing casinos to target the player segments that are most important to them. For example, casinos can customize the virtual wheel to award property-specific prizes such as a weekend stay in their finest suite, VIP bottle service, event tickets or a night of fine dining at their hottest restaurant. This dynamic configuration empowers table game operators to offer unique, non-cash prizes or progressive prizes that target specific player demographics. The mega-cool, fast-paced blackjack variation Mega Blackjack is another can’tmiss table game that will be featured in AGS’ G2E booth. In Mega Blackjack, blackjacks pay 3-to-1 and up to 10-to-1 for an Ace and King of Spades. All other 21s pay 3to-2, and winning bets push if the dealer busts with four or more cards. Including the optional Buster Blackjack side bet as an insurance-type wager, Mega Blackjack “turns a player-favorite card game into a truly epic experience,” says one AGS official.

Social

Tables AGS’ table-products portfolio has continued to grow since last year’s show with more than 1,000 tables installed across the country and more than 25 game titles in its library. Headlining this year’s G2E, AGS will unveil its first-ever shuffler, the Dex S. This single-deck, commercial-grade shuffler features a streamlined design with fewer moving parts for an exceptionally functional and economical alternative to other shuffler products currently in the marketplace. Konami Gaming

L

A RUSH OF DIVERSITY

ast year’s G2E debut of Konami’s Concerto standard upright cabinet was met with strong enthusiasm from casino professionals who witnessed the legacy of high performance and reliability brought on by Podium since its release. Concerto has extended this legacy to Konami’s newest games product line, with launch titles like Chili Chili Fire and Dragon’s Law Twin Fever that have in fact exceeded figures achieved by Podium launch titles when they came to market six years ago. As momentum continues to grow for Concerto worldwide, Konami is wasting no time in expanding a complete lineup of Concerto video slots. These, along with a variety of next-generation product, performance-driven game design, iGaming elements and Synkros systems updates, will be at the forefront of this year’s G2E in Las Vegas. Concerto Continues The sleek black cabinet with its signature holographic attract lighting feature will take on new forms and functions when Konami’s Concerto family lineup is displayed for the first time at G2E 2016. Concerto SeleXion, Concerto Slant, Concerto Crescent and Concerto Stack will be added, with clear visual complement to the standard upright cabinet that is attracting player attention and generating retention at casinos across the globe. Konami Vice President of Marketing Matt Reback says, “One of the most promising trends we discovered after Concerto’s launch was the incredibly strong and consistent performance delivered by the new KP3+ games exclusively for Concerto and for backwards-compatible KP3 games on the new cabinet. The core elements of this machine were designed with the player in mind, and were built to optimize revenue potential. Now, we’re extending those same core Concerto elements to new video formats to allow operators to diversify their casino floor with Konami products that perform.” Konami’s popular SeleXion multi-game is bringing the industry’s fastest game change speed to Concerto for the first time. With expanded memory and processing power, up to 10 different game themes—as well as a stand-alone progressive—can be featured on a single machine. In addition to its Concerto upright debut, SeleXion

64 | G2E Preview 2016

will simultaneously be released on the allnew Concerto Slant. Concerto Slant also carries dual 27-inch HD game screens, with a lower profile and relaxed-angle posture for player comfort and convenience. Other additions to the Concerto family lineup include two unique single-screen cabinets: a curved-screen Concerto Crescent machine and a tall Concerto Stack machine. Both feature a stunning 43-inch, vertically mounted HD monitor that delivers a luxury gaming experience without exceeding the standard upright base size. Several custom game themes will be on display at G2E with exclusive content designed to optimize the extratall portrait orientation. The Pluses Are Infinite Konami’s new KP3+ platform has powered an impressive library of original games with proven popularity on the floor. G2E attendees will encounter another wave of original base games, as well as stand-alone and linked progressives to further expand diversity and specialization in reaching different gambling audiences. With a nod to its roots in entertainment-style games, Konami continues to introduce fun arcade elements to bonus feature events, such as in Jackpot Streams, Hammer Festival and even Titan 360. The thrill and energy of these popular releases first will be introduced to KP3+ in the form of the new progressives, with mystery-

triggered and symbol-driven bonuses. “The continually growing depth of our KP3+ platform library is bringing a wealth of possibilities for properties and players,” says Reback. “Our customers know every square foot of their properties, and they come to us to engineer the machines that give the greatest value for all available space. This year, we’re bringing that intent and mission to our game products in more ways than any previous time.” Systems at the Center Konami’s Synkros casino management system is continually engineering new tools and features to give operators an edge in their market. During G2E, Konami’s comprehensive Synkros demo environment will include the industry’s leading dashboard analytics interface, available to Synkros customers in late 2016. In addition, Konami’s new Synkros Offers Management is further expanding the power of the marketing suite by making multiple loyalty offers available to players at a wide range of touch points. Offers can be non-contingent and operators can empower their guests to select between several offer options. Reback continues, “With Synkros at the center of an operation, it’s powered by industry-leading reliability, flexible integrations and free version upgrades to advance business. Konami games and systems teams are focused on introducing a variety of new products so that customers can leave no space on their floors unplayed.” Konami's proven Concerto machine expands to a debut lineup of neverbefore-seen game cabinets with diversity, flexibility and performance to make the most of every space available For more information, visit G2E Booth 1154 or konamigaming.com.

JCM Global

CONTINUALLY ASKING "WHAT IF?"

ometimes, revolutionary ideas begin S with a simple question: “What if?” That was how JCM Global began more than 60

years ago, and that spirit of innovation has been driving the company ever since. It was a simple question of “What if we put a bill validator on (and later inside) a slot machine?” that led to a revolution in how players and operators viewed a slot machine, and operator revenue and security increased because of it. JCM still asks “What if?”—and the company continues to invest in developing innovative applications for the casino industry, to deliver outside-the-box solutions for today’s integrated industry and multidimensional players. Working in close collaboration with OEMs and system providers, JCM is leading the industry with forward-looking solutions that are better, smarter, faster and more integrated, and go even further to help operators make connections with their customers. JCM always has worked closely with key stakeholders across the gaming industry,

and the company continuously solicits feedback from operators to discover any pain points that arise as the industry evolves. Those close working relationships have led to the development and evolution of products and technologies such as intelligent cash boxes, promotional couponing and complete note scanning, front and back. Now, as the content in EGMs and the EGMs themselves are evolving, so is the need to consider ways to generate additional revenue from existing devices and systems. JCM believes the slot machine can be utilized in new ways to unlock greater value for both the operator and the player. This new “What if?” has sparked a renewed spirit of cooperation between JCM, OEM, CMS

RPM

BUILDING BRANDS THAT ENTERTAIN

eople want to laugh. They want to P scream. Every time they click on something, whenever they open an email or change the channel, they want to be thrilled and amazed. People are hard-wired for curiosity. Casino players expect to be entertained, now more than ever. And RPM builds casino brands that entertain people. Think of the marketplace like one big party. A casino’s brand is one of the many guests. It’s noisy, there’s loud music and everyone’s trying to make conversation. Looking around, there are those to spend time with and those not to. They rub the wrong way, they’re close-talkers or worse, they’re just plain boring. The ones to really remember? They tell great stories, they know funny jokes and speak passionately about things people care about. They’re clever and unexpected. They’re entertaining. So, RPM creates brands that know 76 | G2E Preview 2016

how to work a party. RPM builds brands that drive the conversation—engage the world in ways that are hilarious, intriguing, awe-inspiring and heartfelt. In short, brands that are… unforgettable. Because when a brand entertains, people come looking for it. They seek out the content. They search for and create opinions and posts about brand experiences. They take pictures, they share. People begin a relationship with the brand. And more importantly, the casino. From renowned Native American properties to the world’s biggest entertainment company, RPM has developed some of the greatest gaming brands in the country. From Horseshoe’s legendary persona through the dazzling red-carpet world

RPM created for the Hollywood brand, RPM finds the insights that speak to gamblers and funseekers everywhere. And nobody has created more No. 1 casinos in more markets coast to coast than RPM. RPM is all about successful brands and profitable partners. Its job is to push clients outside their comfort zone. To see the solutions in every challenge. RPM sets the bar very high. For itself, and for its clients. And for the past 21 years, RPM has produced some pretty remarkable results. As the industry continues to evolve, RPM remains at the forefront of casino marketing, offering a full complement of digital and social media services. For more information, visit rpmadv.com.
