COVERAGE:
Clarksville celebrates its Homecoming weekend against a Riceville team that stands at the top of the district standings. “Without guys blocking for [our running backs] they’re not going to do a whole lot. Recent History:
Recent History:
Riceville hasn’t been scoring with quite the moxie they called upon at the end of the 2016 season, but the wins keep coming for the Wildcats. Stef Fair’s team scored the eventual game-winning touchdown with just 2:21 to play, but left the field on Homecoming with their fourth straight victory. Jon Miller tossed up a 30-yard score to Grant Shedenhelm and ran for another five-yarder, but points were hard to find in last week’s contest. Cole Byrnes continued a beastly streak on the defensive side of the ball with 10 tackles, a team-best. The Wildcats have won four straight with wins over a formerly-rated AGWSR team, and an overtime victory over Turkey Valley two weeks ago. Their loss to fourth-ranked Tripoli came down to the final possession.
Clarksville is the “little team that could” heading into the second half of the regular season – only 18 players are on Adam Anthony’s roster but they’re playing to get back to .500 tonight. The Indians turned up the heat last week on the North Iowa Bison on a hot and humid evening – after 12 scoreless minutes, Clarksville racked up 22 points in the second on the way to 42-14 victory. After posting 156 rushing yards and six scores two weeks ago against West Central, Spencer Gray took it to another level with 217 yards and two more scores against the Bison. More than half of those yards came on a pair of scoring plays, including a 65-yard dash that broke the scoreless tie two minutes into the second quarter.
What to Watch For:
The Indians have dealt with their share of illnesses and injuries this season, but have stayed on the field throughout the 2017 campaign. Last week the team got Sterling Kroeze and Blake Johnson back into the lineup, giving them a major power-up at defensive end. So far, the special teams have been competitive for Adam Anthony’s group, and the running game has been a true highlight. The passing game, however, has been lackluster – the running game really shined last week as the Indians snapped their 13-game district losing skid.
What to Watch For: On the offensive side of the ball, Jon Miller will be the player to watch – north-central Iowa has a habit of producing impressive dual-threat eight-man quarterbacks and Jon Miller is the latest. The line will keep things tight and, for the most part, look to move the ball straight ahead. It’s a big line too – guard Chris Eastman is a 255-pound sophomore and senior center Spencer Kuhn checks in at 300 pounds, and both are powerful players up front who will drive hard off the snap.
Impact Player:
Impact Player:
Boe Adams is a noticeable plus for the Wildcats on the edges, and gets to the ball quickly. Expect him to be a major factor in tonight’s game.
Koltyn Beckham is the Indians’ leading receiver for the season, but he’s also the second half of the two-headed Clarksville rushing attack.
Keys to the Game:
Keys to the Game:
Riceville has an uncanny ability to grind out drives and wear down opposing teams. Look for them to exploit their depth and ramp up the physicality tonight.
Tonight’s game will be a battle of speed on the edges and a race to the ball for the defenses. Clarksville has to win that race tonight and put pressure on Riceville’s offense.
