COLONEL HAROLD PHINEAS GARD CLASS OF 1924

Born in Massachusetts, he was commissioned into the Coastal Artillery Corps upon graduation. He commanded two different batteries, first in the 55th Coastal Artillery on the island of Oahu in Hawaii from 1937 to 1939, and then the 68th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion from 1939 to 1940. During World War II, he served with various Coastal Artillery units and was made the Commanding Officer of the 192nd Coastal Artillery Battalion in 1944. After graduating from the Command and General Staff College in 1944, he was assigned to Headquarters Army Service Forces, Washington, DC in 1945. He was the Commanding Officer of the 19th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Group from 1950 to 1951 and then the Executive Officer of the 35th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Brigade at Fort Meade, Maryland from 1951 to 1952. His last assignment was as the Anti-Aircraft Officer at Headquarters, United States Army Alaska from 1952 until he retired from active duty in 1954. Colonel Gard died in Newport News, Virginia on December 14, 1997.
