  

Sri Lanka's Maithripala Sirisena was a low-profile minister when a rudderless opposition chose him to spearhead a campaign to topple the president. The son of a World War II veteran, Sirisena entering parliament in 1989 after settling in the eastern district of Polonnaruwa, where he had worked as a local government official. At the time his Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) was struggling to find candidates willing to risk attacks by Marxist Sinhalese militants who wanted an elections boycott. Sirisena was also a soft target for the Tamil Tiger rebels during the height of fighting and says the separatists may have tried to assassinate him on at least five occasions. Sirisena was jailed for nearly two years after being arrested on suspicion of leading a revolt against the government in 1971 when he was just 20. 63-year-old farmer-turned-politician had become a rallying point for disaffected Sri Lankans. He rejected the president's accusation of backstabbing, promising to "end the Rajapakse family rule".

Dressed in the white sarong and tunic favoured by Sri Lankan politicians, Sirisena appeals to a rural electorate while his main backer, the centre-right United National Party (UNP), is more popular in urban areas. Maithripala Sirisena has pledged to abolish the executive presidency within 100 days and return the country to a Westminster-style parliamentary democracy where the police, the judiciary, and the civil service will be independent institutions. The government has accsued Sirisena of being a proxy of former president Chandrika Kumaratunga, who came out of retirement to boost his electoral fortunes by asking her loyalists to vote for him. Maithripala Sirisena says he will make UNP leader and former premier Ranil Wickremesinghe his prime minister if he wins, and together they pose a a serious threat to Rajapakse. Sirisena's vision for the country ties in closely with the free-market, investor-friendly policies of the opposition UNP which provided him with the political base to challenge Rajapaksa.

SEBI proposed 'e-IPOs'  Capital markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has proposed draft norms for initial public offers (IPOs) in electronic form to boost retail participation, and a 'fast-track' route for already listing public listed firm to raise funds via follow-on public offerings (FPOs) and rights issues.  The proposed development comes as a part of efforts to boost fundraising from the markets via simplifying the process of IPOs, lowering their costs, helping companies reach more retail investors in small towns, and providing fast track route for FPOs and rights issues.  The proposed electronic-IPOs (e-IPOs) mechanism will enable investors to place bid for shares in the public offering online, eventually on mobile too, without signing any physical documents. The process will result in overall lower cost of public issues due to reduction in printing of application forms.

International December 9 1. US House Passes Bill Approving Keystone XL Pipeline  

House of Representatives of the United States passed a legislation that approves construction of a controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline. The bill was passed by 153 votes in the 266-member House of Representatives. Now the bill will go to the Senate for approval The lower house of the US took the decision after Nebraska Supreme Court in its ruling removed a major obstacle that delayed project till now

The obstacle was over the issue of constitutionality of Governor’s decision to bypass regulatory procedures and approve the pipeline route himself. In 2012, former governor of Nebraska, Dave Heineman had granted TransCanada Corp a pipeline route to cross the State

In its decision, four judges of the Nebraska court said that the Governors’ decision was unconstitutional but state law required five judges to reach that conclusion. As a result, the deadlock over the issue in the court amounted to ruling in the company's favour

With the court decision in the favour of the pipeline, it is now supposed that US President Barack Obama will have to sign the controversial bill who so far had refused to sign the bill on the grounds that the case was pending in Nebraska court

About Keystone XL oil Pipeline Country: Canada/United States TYPE: Crude oil Owner: TransCanada  The 2000-kilometer Keystone

XL oil pipeline would carry 830000 barrels of oil per day from the oil sands of western Canada to the ports and refineries of the Gulf Coast of Mexico

The pipeline will be built by TransCanada Corp. which had submitted its permit application in 2008 to the State Department, which has jurisdiction over Cross-Border Pipelines

Surveys January 9 1. Teixobactin, a new antibiotic discovered.

For All Competitive Materials visit www.jobs2day.in

A team of scientists led by Kim Lewis from Northeastern University have identified a new antibiotic called teixobactin, which kills some kinds of bacteria by preventing them from building their outer coats. They used it to successfully treat antibiotic-resistant infections in mice. And more importantly, when they tried to deliberately evolve strains of bacteria that resist the drug, they failed. Teixobactin appears resistant to resistance. Bacteria will eventually develop ways of beating teixobactin -- remember Orgel -- but the team are optimistic that it will take decades rather than years for this to happen. That buys us time. Teixobactin isn't even the most promising part of its own story. That honour falls on the iChip-the tool that the team used to discover the compound. Teixobactin is a fish; the iChip is the rod. Having the rod guarantees that we'll get more fish-and we desperately need more.
