Geographic Coordinate System: Latitude and Longitude Overview: The goal of this lab is to practice using Latitude and Longitude to find locations of different places on the Earth’s surface. Latitude and Longitude are the elements of a tool called the geographic coordinate system. All coordinate systems share a purpose of letting people communicate where they are to each other. They do this by placing an imaginary grid over the Earth’s surface. This grid works the same way as the grids you used in math class, with an ‘x’ coordinate and a ‘y’ coordinate. The combination of the x and y indicates a specific location.
x Location = 6, 5 y
Latitude and Longitude is the same basic idea. Given the Latitude and Longitude coordinates, you see where they meet, and find your location. Latitude: Distance North (N) or South (S) of the Equator. Goes from 0 (the Equator) to 90 N or S (the North Pole and South Pole respectively). The convention is to write the latitude before longitude. Longitude: Distance East (E) or West (W) of the Prime Meridian (which goes through Greenwich, England). Goes from 0 (the Prime Meridian) to 180 (the International Date Line). Longitude always follows longitude. These coordinates can be written with two different systems: Degrees, Minutes, Seconds (DMS): Example: 37° 43’ 47” N, 122° 13’ 12” W 1° (Degree) = 60’ (Minutes) 1’ = 60” (Seconds)
Decimal Degrees (DD): Example: 37.73 N, 122.22 W DMS is converted to a decimal 27° 30’ N = 27.5 N Part 1 Use a Globe to find the geographic coordinates for the following cities within one degree. Don’t forget to include the directions (N, S, E, and W)! 1) San Francisco, CA USA 2) Cairo, Egypt 3) Beijing, China 4) Brisbane, Australia 5) Santiago, Chile
Part 2 Use an Atlas to find the precise location of the following cites. Give as much detail as your atlas provides 6) Cleveland, Ohio, USA 7) Seoul, South Korea 8) Moscow, Russia 9) Mumbai, India Part 3 What major world city is found at the following coordinates? Please include both the city and country for your answer. 10)
45° 30.102’ N, 73° 34.038’W
11)
21° 18’ N, 157° 49.002’W
12)
33.8650° S, 151.2094° E
13)
28.6139° N, 77.2090° E
Part 4 Fill out the attached map with the locations provided. For areas, draw a box around the coordinates given.
