May Means Farmers Markets for Independent Candidate   

Gibson, volunteers circulating petitions in Fairfax and Prince William counties    FAIRFAX, VA – April 30, 2014    With 40 days remaining in the period for collecting voter signatures, Mark Gibson – independent  candidate for Virginia’s 11th Congressional District (VA‐11) – and neighborhood volunteers will focus  their efforts on circulating ballot petitions at weekend farmers markets in Fairfax and Prince William  counties. “Without party primary elections in the 11th District this year,” Gibson said, “signing a ballot  petition is the only way for a voter to make a choice of what candidates appear on the November 4  ballot.”    According to Subsection 24.2‐506 of the Code of Virginia, candidates “other than a party nominee” must  present the petitions to the Virginia State Board of Elections (SBE) by June 10. In order for Gibson to  appear on the November 4 ballot, SBE must validate that 1,000 of the signatures presented are those of  current 11th District voters.    Gibson was surprised to learn that without primary elections, party candidates do not have the same  ballot petitions requirements. “It’s another example of the Commonwealth’s recognized political parties  writing the rules to suit themselves. This didn’t originate with SBE,” Gibson said. Recognized political  parties are defined in the Code of Virginia, Subsection 24.2‐101.    Saturday farmers markets in the 11th District include Burke and Reston; Sunday markets are in the  Mosaic District and Dale City. Gibson’s complete schedule can be found at his campaign website,  Gibson4congress2014.com.     # # #  About Mark Gibson and Gibson4congress2014  Mark Gibson is an independent candidate in Virginia's 11th Congressional District in 2014.  A candidate  for Congress in 2012, Mark is a lifelong Washington area resident and has lived in Fairfax since 1997.    With over 20 years of management experience and a Master's degree in Economics, he serves as chief  operating officer for a Fairfax‐based small business.    Contact  Mark Gibson  Website  Gibson4congress2014.com  Email
