Global Health for Social Change Internship June 23-August 15, 2014 www.foundation.co.za/GHSCI/index.html
November 20, 2013 Dear Colleague, As an American scientist and epidemiologist living in South Africa, I have the privilege to work alongside local, national and international colleagues combating the burden of the HIV/AIDS and TB co-epidemics. My experiences have been made richer by colleagues who come from non-traditional backgrounds, providing approaches and perspectives that have been critical to the success of public health programs. An integrated approach to public health While natural and social scientists provide much needed tools to describe and measure health in quantitative and qualitative terms, those engaging in public health from a humanities perspective provide the metaphors, images and language that help us understand the effects of disease on the human condition. The result of such an integrative approach to public health strengthens our capacity to respond to global health priorities. Because of the power of this holistic approach, the Global Health for Social Change (GHSC) Internship seeks to provide students from diverse academic disciplines with the opportunity to learn how to apply their critical thinking skills to public health challenges. The GHSC Intership Program Through practical experiences and cultural immersion, students will: • Gain real-world work experience—by supporting vital public health programs that fight TB, HIV, childhood malnutrition, maternal-child health and more • Expand cultural horizons—by living with a host family in the community they are serving • Make a difference in the lives of others—by working with local or international NGOs to strengthen public health systems How you can help Like you, the GHSC Internship program wants to train today’s students to be tomorrow’s leaders. Our program aims to give students the opportunity to hone cross-disciplinary and critical thinking skills— enabling a more comprehensive approach to solving public health problems. Help us spread the word We’re looking for students with a wide range of backgrounds and interests—from science, social science or humanities to communications, nursing or public health. We would appreciate your sharing the attached PDF flyer with interested colleagues, students and campus groups.
