Due to its success, this will continue in the 2017-18 academic year along with some exciting new additions! The PE team, in partnership with staff at Churchill College, are hosting a number of new CVLs in Table Tennis & Basketball for U13s & U16s. This will hopefully enable students to gain a more valuable experience and help them build upon their skills over an extended time. Keep a look out as a Handball CVL will be the focus in spring term.

Stories from Schools St. Columbas RC Primary School By Mrs Iliadou

Our Year 5 team took part in the Hoops4Health Basketball Competition, in April and finished in 1st place. They are the North Tyneside Champions for 2016-2017! The team represented North Tyneside at the next round at the Champions of Champions. They have shown amazing teamwork and determination throughout the competitions and we are all so proud of them and their achievements!

Preston Grange Primary School

By Newcastle Eagles Community Foundation This is the first time that the Newcastle Eagles Community Foundation have held an event for Year 6's across Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. This event saw 32 schools come together to battle it out for the cup. The atmosphere was incredible throughout the day and every school gave everything they could. The Newcastle Eagles Community Foundation would like to give special congratulations to the champions, Preston Grange Primary School.

Bailey Green Primary School By Miss Cowie

The boys Football team have had a great year topped off by winning back the Cremona Shield. At the beginning of the year they struggled to play as a team as there were so many great individual players. However with the extra lunchtime training Mrs Taylor provided them with, they have achieved and performed exceptionally well. The girls team were on the back foot at the beginning of the year however after introducing an FA Coach, Linsey Broughton and along with Mr George and Mr Doolan the girls have proven to be a force to be reckoned with, just like the boys, coming third in their first competition and winning their league on the same day! The girls have gone from strength to strength.

Burradon Primary School By Miss Turnball

The children at Burradon Community Primary School thoroughly enjoyed their day at the North Tyneside Key Steps Gymnastics Competition where we implemented all of our fantastic new skills Gail taught us during the autumn term. We loved attending the competition where we used different equipment and did things we’ve never done before! We were super pleased that the key step 1 and 2 vaulting teams received medallist certificates, what an achievement!

St. Thomas More

By Martin Bland, Year 9 pupil

I first started doing gymnastics at the City of Newcastle Gymnastics Academy when I was 8 years old. I started in the recreational group who train once per week, but quickly advanced up to the Elite Boys Team and was training up to six times per week. I enjoyed the Gymnastics Academy but was looking for a new challenge and have always enjoyed trampolining, so it was an easy choice of what to do next. I joined Apollo Trampoline Club in Washington in June 2015, the club where Olympian Kat Driscoll trains, and in the first year I qualified for two UK competitions, achieving a Gold and a Silver at NDP Level 5. In 2016 I moved up to Level 8 and again in the two UK competitions I achieved Gold and Silver medals. Also in 2016 I competed in the European Loule Cup in Portugal and was placed fifth overall. 2017 has already been an exciting year for me as I have now moved up to Elite Level. In the first competition of the year in Nottingham I was placed second, in the process qualifying for the British Finals that take place in Liverpool in September. I also competed in the Alsmeer Cup in Amsterdam back in March and was best placed for my age. If I also do well in my next competition in Sheffield I will have a chance of being selected for the World Age Games in Bulgaria in November. Later this year, Martin is likely to be on the “Team GB Pathway programme”, which means he will be training at the British team’s base in Liverpool. Congratulations to Martin on these fantastic achievements, we wish him every success in future competitions.

North Tyneside’s future Gymnastics judges Interest in this year’s Key Step Gymnastics competition was once again on the up with over 340 individual entries! Children across key stages 1 and 2 competed at the event, performing Key Step routines that they had been practicing back at school. With this in mind the PE and sport team needed some support to ensure the competition ran effectively and efficiently. The team worked with coaches from Whitley Bay Gym Club & the City of Newcastle Gymnastics Academy who trained up a number of young leaders. The aim was to provide them with the skills to judge alongside qualified judges on the panel. The girls received several training sessions focused on the specific judging elements for the moves relevant to each key step routine. Some of the young leaders also supervised and managed the rotation of young people on both the floor and vault on the day of the competition and their role was to reassure and settle the nerves of the children before they went onto the apparatus. A number of school staff commented on how great they were with the children. A competition of this size for a child in year 1 is huge, so having the support of these role models is of great importance and helpful in preparing them for future gymnastics competitions. We would like to pass on our thanks to Gail Robson & Karen Chapman for their support with this. We will continue this work in future years as it was a great opportunity for the young leaders to gain experience in their chosen sport from a different perspective. A huge well done to the girls from St. Thomas More, Whitley Bay High & John Spence who showed enthusiasm and commitment throughout the process and did an excellent job on the day of the competition.

The PE & Sport team piloted a new event during the summer term focusing on Outdoor & Adventurous activity, a Trail and Challenge event for pupils in year 5. There were 5 events held at The Rising Sun Country Park and approximately 300 children attended. For a lot of these young people it was the first time that their navigational skills, including map reading had been put to the test. Not only did this event provide pupils with the opportunity to get to grips with orienteering from one point to another, it also enabled the young people to reach their daily target of 60 active minutes recommended by UK Chief Medical Officers’. Without even realising, the young people had covered distances of around 3 to 4 miles of this huge country park, including hiking up a rather steep hill! Whilst following the map and making their way to identified points on the map, they had to keep a look out for the orange orienteering kites; hanging from trees and benches and located just off the main walkway, the kites also had stamps attached to them. The groups had to use these in order to mark their score card to confirm that they made it to the specified sites. The groups were required to do all of this within a time frame and return to the visitors centre, having gained as many stamps on their score card as possible in the hope of getting as many points as they could for their team. The PE & Sport team plan to run a number of these events throughout this academic year as they proved to be a great success.

The Secondary PE Landscape “On 19 October 2016, the All-Party Parliamentary Group released it’s report, calling for change to PE in order for it to be fit for the 21st century. The PE profession was called to recognise and embrace the need for change, with a bigger health focus and commitment to personalise the offer in secondary schools.” In a recent article in the latest Youth Sport Trust’s Inspire publication Will Swaithes, Head of Physical Education and Achievement at the Youth Sport Trust, explores the report by the All-Party Parliamentary group on a fit and healthy childhood and poses a few questions to PE departments in order to “examine and redefine their curriculum PE offer”. 1) When did you last look at your core PE offer and consider why you do what you do? 2) Has most of the PE Department development time been centred (understandably) around GCSE and A-Level reforms? 3) Is your curriculum meeting the needs of all pupils and their physical and mental well-being? 4) Is the purpose of your curriculum clear to you and your pupils? 5) Is it contributing explicitly to students’ readiness for work or further study? 6) Above all, is physical education (and what it can uniquely bring to young people’s personal, social and emotional development) really valued in your school?”

What does PE look like in your school? For more information on how to access the full report or the article please contact the PE & Sport Team. Opportunities for subject leaders to network with colleagues from across the Tyne and Wear are available at sessions on the following dates; · · ·

Primary PE & Sport Premium

A recent announcement from the Department for Education has indicated that the Primary PE & Sport Premium funding will double in total from September 2017. Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils will receive £16,000 and an additional payment of £10 per pupil meaning that schools will be able to deliver further improvements to their PE and Sport provision. It is expected that schools will see an improvement against the following 5 key indicators: 1. the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles 2. the profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement 3. increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport 4. broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils 5. increased participation in competitive sport Check out the Spring 2016 edition of the Goal newsletter for a summary of how the funding should be used as well as the accountability measures of the funding. Please also visit the Department for Education’s guidance page on the PE & Sports Premium for further information and support. Active Literacy An Active Literacy training course will take place from 1-4pm on Wednesday 16th November, to coincide with the Primary PE Network meeting taking place on the same day, 9-12pm. The course is open to members of staff across the whole school and not just solely for the PE Coordinator, in order to create a workforce within this subject area. This course uses the context of PE and Sport alongside practical learning approaches to support the teaching of English across the school. The PE & Sport Premium can be used to cover the release of staff to attend this training.

The new way to book CPD from North Tyneside PE and school sport team.

In the summer term North Tyneside schools engaged over 420 young people in Primary Change 4 Life Sports clubs. These are extracurricular clubs which are designed to engage the least active children in physical activity and school sport. The overall aim is to increase young people’s awareness of living a healthier lifestyle. Almost half of these young people have gained the skills and confidence to take part in additional opportunities, accessing sports clubs on offer outside of school hours, taking part in activities hosted by local leisure centres, attending community sports clubs as well as participating in School Games competitions at levels 1 & 2. In June, a county wide training session was held at John Spence High School for deliverers and mentors of new and existing clubs. There was also a Champions training session lead by athlete mentors; Amanda Coulson, a GB boxer and Jade Windley, a GB Tennis player who worked with the primary sports leaders in order to inspire and motivate participation in sport and physical activity. The leaders were encouraged to take this back to their own school and be the ambassadors for health and wellbeing, in the hope that they will inspire younger pupils and their peers just like the athlete mentors inspired them. The Change 4 Life champions’ role is to promote and support the delivery of the Change4Life sports clubs and help children at their own school engage in activity, build self confidence and ensure that the importance of living a healthy active lifestyle is embedded into school life.

Tyne and Wear Level 3 School Games

Unfortunately the weather was not on our side for the outdoor events on the 7th July at the Level 3 School Games finals and therefore a number of events were cancelled. However the team put a contingency plan in place in order to host the Quad Kids Athletics indoors, the Year 4 Mini Tennis competition went ahead as scheduled in the Tennis Centre & the Key Step Gymnastics took place at AAASports club. Here’s a breakdown of the medals that were achieved by North Tyneside pupils;

Virtual Quad Kids Athletics

This year’s Virtual Quad Kids Athletics competition saw the highest number of entries we have ever received. In 2012 there were just 182 young people from 6 schools who took part, 1,819 children from 19 schools were involved this year. The schools plan, prepare and organise the level1 intra-school competitions on their school site. Reaching this number of pupils would not be possible without the hard work and commitment of primary & middle school staff in North Tyneside who have provided opportunities for so many young people at their school. The virtual competition enables schools to take part in level 1 and level 2 competitions without leaving their school site. It also provides children with an opportunity to compete against themselves. Times and distances for each of the four events can be taken at the beginning of the summer term for example and following specific support, coaching and practice sessions, results can be recorded 6 weeks later in order to measure the improvements made. This is a great assessment tool and a great way to evidence impact. For further information about how to get involved in the Quad Kids Athletics this year please contact a member of the PE team.

Tennis triumph for Benton Dene pupils

Benton Dene Primary School’s Year 4 team played exceptionally well throughout the initial North Tyneside Tennis competitions and went on to take Gold at the 2017 Tyne and Wear Level 3 School Games finals. This was following their brilliant performance last academic year at the year 3 competition where again they won Gold. What really makes this success so significant is that these young people do not play tennis at a community club, it’s all down to the hard work and commitment back at school from not only the players themselves but also the staff who have been involved in their development for a number of years and have put in the effort and hours of coaching in order to prepare them. Mr. Jarvis, PE Coordinator at Benton Dene said “They are an incredible group of tennis players, I couldn’t be prouder!” Kings Priory have also had a great term of tennis success. Again looking very strong throughout the North Tyneside competitions, the Year 3 team finished on top, dropping only 6 matches across the 32 in total that were played at the two competitions. They qualified for the Tyne and Wear final and followed suit, to take away the Gold medal.
