She stays alone with the Indians when her father returns home for the rest of the family. *1955 Newbery Honor Book Level 4-5 (0) The Matchlock Gun by Walter D. Edmonds Edward is in charge of protecting his family on the American frontier. Throughout the book are illustrations that help tell the courageous fight of the family to survive in this new land. Beverly Cleary Series (Any book by Beverly Cleary would fit this requirement.) Suggested titles: Ramona the Brave, Ramona and her Father, Dear Mr. Henshaw, Otis Spofford, The Mouse and the Motorcycle, Ralph S. Mouse or Runaway Ralph Baseball Fever by Johanna Hurwitz Ezra’s immigrant father does not understand his ten-year-old son’s love for the sport of baseball. Level 3-5 (0) The Trumpet of the Swan by E. B. White Trumpet Swan Louis learns to speak to the world with a stolen trumpet. With the support of an unusual boy named Sam, who helps Louis learn how to read and write, the swan has some rather “unswanlike” adventures and ultimately wins the prize he most desires. Level 4-6 (0) Little House Series by Laura Ingalls Wilder The adventures of a young girl, Laura Ingalls Wilder, are highlighted in this series as the young girl grows up during frontier times.
