Overview Seventh graders are well into puberty and observers can see vast differences between the students. Girls are often taller and more mature than boys at this age. Some students are still playing with toys while others are contemplating dating. Seventh grade is a great time to teach students about constructing an argument and having evidence to back up opinions. Science and Social Studies are “real” subjects with dedicated periods. Students in 7th grade study Life Science and World Geography. Abstract concepts begin to gel for many 7th graders. Brain development is faster in some students than for others. The differences begin to show up in math classes. Depending on success in 7th Grade math, students may be recommended for Algebra in 8th grade. Seventh Grade is a critical time to keep a student’s interest. Exploring careers is a good way to help a child see how their education can be used in the world. Books that 7th graders choose have more complex themes. Parents are encouraged to read some of the books that your child is reading so that you can have conversations about the content. As much as 7th graders may seem like they do not want their parents around, they value your opinion very much!

Unified Arts Seventh Grade students participate in Unified Arts classes along with their academics. Operating on a fifteen-day rotation, students have Music, Art, PE, and Health. They are also eligible to join the band. All Students Must Succeed! Nottingham Elementary School has an intensive Response to Intervention (RtI) program. In middle school, teachers work together to provide interventions for students who show a need. Though not as intensive a program as in younger grades, intervention in 7th grade may take place during WIN (What I Need) time or during breaks in class. Students take benchmark tests during the year to ensure that they are making progress in both reading and math.

Nottingham School Organization Nottingham Elementary School is part of SAU 44 which serves the towns of Nottingham, Northwood and Strafford. The school’s curriculum is based on state and local standards which are anchored in the Common Core State Standards. Science

Literacy

Focus on Life Science:

Select Literacy Standards Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g., how setting shapes the characters or plot). Analyze how an author develops and contrasts the points of view of different characters or narrators in a text.

Math

Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.

Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers.

Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and wellstructured event sequences. With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on how well purpose and audience have been addressed. Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation. Delineate a speaker's argument and specific claims, evaluating the soundness of the reasoning and the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence.

Select math standards

Compare and contrast a text to an audio, video, or multimedia version of the text, analyzing each medium's portrayal of the subject (e.g., how the delivery of a speech affects the impact of the words).

Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.

Use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. Solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations. Draw, construct and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationships between them.

Social Studies In World Geography, students study what is currently happening in a variety of places around the world. Some of the essential questions that are addressed are: "How does geography affect the way people live?" "What makes a culture unique?" and " Why does conflict develop?" As students learn about people and places around the globe, they make connections to themselves and also develop an understanding of how societies function.

Solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angle measure, area, surface area, and volume. Use random sampling to draw inferences about a population. Draw informal comparative inferences about two populations. Investigate chance processes and develop, use, and evaluate probability models.

Note: Full detailed standards for all subjects can be found on the school website.
