Ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) recorded in Buckinghamshire (vice-county 24) VERSION 2.2. Authors: Mark G. Telfer and Martin C. Harvey. Date: 17 May 2007. Based on data held on the MapMate database at BMERC, comprising 1,491 Buckinghamshire ground beetle records at 22 February 2007, plus some subsequent edits to the list. This includes data from the national Ground Beetle Recording Scheme, supplied by Mark Telfer, and from Reid (1979). Records have been contributed by around 80 people, especially Mark Telfer, Chris Reid and Mike Jackson. 1. Species list We currently have Buckinghamshire records for 149 species (over a third of the UK total of 367 species). Of these, 42 species have not been recorded since before 1980; 13 (including many of the rarer species) not since before 1960. However, 13 species appear to be new to the county list since Reid’s 1979 list. Taxonomy follows the MapMate database species dictionary. Species

There are also records on the database for Asaphidion flavipes s.l. (s.l. = sensu lato, ‘in the broad sense’). Until the publication of Speight et al. (1986), British coleopterists had thought only one small Asaphidion occurred in Britain and called it Asaphidion flavipes. Speight et al. (1986) revealed that there were actually three very similar species: A. curtum, A. stierlini and A. flavipes s.s. (s.s. = sensu stricto, ‘in the narrow sense’). Only A. curtum and A. stierlini have been reliably recorded in Buckinghamshire.

A further 14 species are listed in Reid (1979) as requiring confirmation in Buckinghamshire (Nationally Scarce species are asterisked): Agonum piceum Amara communis Amara consularis * Amara montivaga Badister peltatus *

* : Carabus violaceus is well-known as the “Violet Ground-beetle”, one of the largest ground-beetles on the Bucks list. Unfortunately, many recorders are unaware that there is a very similar species that can cause identification problems: Carabus problematicus. In our experience, C. problematicus is the more widespread species in Bucks, so it is likely that many of the Violet Ground Beetle records entered as C. violaceus actually refer to C. problematicus.
