“Rose Show Round-up”

By Jean Giesel – Rose Show Chairman

Our 44th rose show is history and we are already looking forward to 2018! We can be proud that a crew of dedicated volunteers put together a beautiful show. Thanks to all who participated in any way. Each member contributed time and talent and it all came together. Although the fickle weather this year limited the number of roses available for many exhibitors, we still had a lovely display for our visitors to enjoy and had 19 arrangements, almost as many as 2015, but only about half as many horticulture entrants. Thanks to Lee Kline who greeted and spoke to each visitor as they entered and to Dan Mills and others who answered their questions. Cydney and Art Wade sold out of Peggy Martin roses and Cyd and Ann Sherwood made lovely bouquets available for purchase. Ralph Stream did a masterful job planning the layout and staging of the show and recruiting the judges, Linda Reed , Cindy Dale, Montine Herring, Walt Reed, apprentice Sara Coleman, Mary Maud Sharpe, and Jeff Hoffman. Ralph and Jean were instrumental in organizing all the exhibition details. I would especially like to thank Ralph for building the “ladders” for our first rose photography exhibit. Jean was responsible for the show schedule and ordering and organizing supplies. Art Wade, Ken Osborne, and Bob Kline did the heavy lifting to move show supplies from and to our storage unit. Mary Menoski, Kathi Warren, and Ann Sherwood put together a delicious breakfast buffet for the judges and attractive areas for breakfast and lunch carrying out the theme of “Seeing Your Garden Through Rose Colored Glasses.” Dan Mills arranged the box lunches. And what would be a rose show without prizes? Thanks to Dan Mills, Missy Burton, and Mary Menoski. Shirley Mullins, Cleon Jenkins, and Jean Stream kept up with recording the results and provided beautifully calligraphed certificates. We also give a big “thank you” to Wayne and Lyndy Myers who came from Jacksonville to lend a hand with classification and clerking. Other clerks were Helen Hardee, Cyd Wade, Jean Giesel, and Bob and Lee Kline. Others who helped were Danton Sherwood, John Menoski, Ted Giesel, Willie Mae Burley, Van Sherwood, who won in the Arrangements Novice Class. It was nice to have a visit from Anita Campbell who has been having some health problems. And a round of applause for Earl Bergadine who helped in so many ways and the First Christian Church for hosting our show. It’s always good to critique and look ahead. The layout of the show worked well other than Classes 20 and 21, minis and minifloras, being crowded especially for the judging. We had many more visitors than the past several years, probably due to a more accessible location. How about getting the email addresses of visitors—at least those who express interest in our meetings. Some other suggestions I heard were to open to exhibitors at 7 when it is starting to get light and close at 3 or 3:30, providing that breakdown of the show would not start any earlier. Add a photography contest. We might do more to encourage our own members and others to enter the show. There were no entries in the Horticulture Novice class. And remember that we are all volunteers and doing our best.
