WHAT IS GUERRILLA VIDEO/FILMMAKING? Film Industry • •

No Permits Real locations

Small Crew

Low budget

What does it mean for you •

Thinking outside the box

Not hiring professionals/me

Not having president/Executive Director •

Using smartphone

You all have something to say ‐ how can you say it in a unique way? Emotional, funny, personal, what direction do you want to take and why?

Make sure you SHOW and not just TELL ‐ don’t forget this is a visual medium.

Don’t tell people what they already know ‐ take them someplace they haven’t been.  Show them something they’ve never seen. MM

AMAZING! •

1995 ‐ MiniDV ‐ HD was @50k and over ‐ college we were still on film

2005 Cameras started to appear in phones

2007/8 ‐ DSLR’s with video capabilities ‐ HD Video hit the market @ price point  that opened the market up to everyone.

Today we can do 4k video on our phone iPhone 7 advertisement https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6dsRpVyyWs

50k camera vs iPhone 7 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztpX3AO1UtU&t=16s

Taking full advantage of the tech •

Use a manual camera App

Iphones/Android ‐ Filmic Pro: www.filmicpro.com/ ‐ One of the best 10 bucks  you ever spent ‐ allows you to transform the camera into a professional tool.

CHANGE SETTINGS ON CAMERA •

Bitrate:  the higher the setting the better the quality

Audio: AAC

Frame Rate: 24fps ‐ cinematic look

Before you shoot •

Battery ‐ video EATS battery life ‐ buy external

Create a gear check list Know how much storage you have ‐ 16gigs not much Release forms Research/Interview questions/ tissues

• • •

Be prepared for anything

USING THE CAMERA •

ALWAYS shoot horizontal ‐ vertical is not how we see the world

Stabilization ‐ tripod mount, arms, built‐in

Instead of zooming ‐ physically move the camera

Lighting ‐ best with a TON of light ‐ use manual controls ‐ next to  window or light source

Audio ‐ use an external mic ‐ if not ‐ move camera close as possible ‐ people  are forgiving of bad picture but not forgiving of bad audio

Establishing shot/Extremely wide Shot Wide angle shots usually at the beginning of the scene that show the full environment in order to set the stage so that your viewer  knows where the story is taking place.

Wide Shot or Long Shot Wide shots provide for a little tighter view of a scene as compared to the establishing/extremely wide shot.

Medium Shot This shot gets in a little closer to the subject and usually portrays the subject from the waist up.

Close Up A close up is a tight view of the subject. If the subject were a person, the person’s face would fill the entire frame for a close up.

Extreme Close Up

Two shot

Over the shoulder shot

Cutaway shot Cutaway shots show anything other than the main subjects.

SHOT ANGLES High angle With high angles, the camera looks down on the subject. The high angle is commonly used to portray the subject as small and vulnerable.

Eye level We are used to seeing people at eye level in everyday life so this is the most common angle. The eye level angle is the  eye level of your subject rather than your own.

Low angle Low angles are used to make the subject appear larger and dominant.

6 Rules for video composition https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qj3QIQXYyik&t=44s

Rule of thirds ‐ divides frame into 3x3 grid ‐ intersecting lines are ideal placement.

Avoid the center  ‐ unless you want to draw the eye to center.

180 degree Rule ‐ keep them all on the same side.

Headroom ‐ leave room at top of head ‐ unless its an extreme close‐up.

Create Depth ‐ foreground and background ‐ be creative!

Know when to break the rules

While shooting  ‐ get coverage.   Wouldn’t hurt to get a WIDE, MED, CU of  everything you shoot.  More coverage ‐ the more freedom in editing  HOLD EACH SHOT FOR AT LEAST 10SEC.

Getting media off the phone. Mac ‐ image capture ‐ iTunes‐ cloud backup

Make sure you have the rights to use EVERYTHING in your video ‐ people, music,  locations, etc. CONTENT CONTENT CONTENT 1 video a year isn’t going to get you a following
