Guilt Trips and Honor: Dantes probes--chapters 16-20

Chapters 16‐20 feature in‐depth interactions with Gaspard Caderousse and Monsieur Morrel in which Dantes probes into what his old friends have done while he was in  prison, how they feel about Dantes and what happened to him, and how they are currently conducting their lives. Below is one extensive passage (18 lines from the book)  from chapter 16 featuring Dantes, disguised as a priest, questioning Caderousse about past events involving his former acquaintances. To the right of the quote is  commentary and analysis on the quote. Your job is to select and copy large, very well‐chosen (highly significant) quotes and do your own commentary and analysis of what  they showcase. On this side feature quotes from chapter 16 (Caderousse); on the other side, feature quotes from chapters 17‐19 (Morrel).      “First of all I must make  sure you’re really the man  I’m looking for. . . . In 1814  or 1815 did you know a  sailor named Dantes?”     “Dantes? Yes, I knew him,  poor Edmond! In fact, he  was one of my best friends.  Do you know him? Is he  still alive? Is he free? Is he  happy?”     “He died in prison,  wretched and hopeless.”     Caderousse turned pale.  He turned away and the  priest saw him wipe a tear  from his eye with a corner  of the red handkerchief  which he wore around his  head. “Poor boy!” he  murmured. “There’s  another proof of what I  was telling you, that God is  good only to the wicked.  Ah, the world is going from  bad to worse!”     “You seem to have been  quite fond of him,” said the  priest.     “Yes, I was very fond of  him,” said Caderousse,  “although I must admit I  envied his happiness for a  short while. But since then  I can assure you I’ve felt  great pity for his  misfortune.” There was a  silence during which the  priest searchingly  scrutinized the innkeeper’s  face. “Did you know him?  went on Caderousse.    Pages 97‐98 

     Dantes is confident that  he can bring up his past  identity and not be  recognized.       Caderousse, without  having anything to gain at  this point, seems to  remember Dantes with  genuine fondness.       A nice way for Dantes to  immediately get an  indication of how  Caderousse really feels  about Dante.        Unless you’re an actor,  it’s pretty hard to fake a  tear in and instant.  Caderousse seems to feel  true sadness for Dantes’  sad end.       Caderousse’s casting  himself as “bad” and  Dantes as “good” shows  humility, as well as high  regard, for Dantes.         Dantes, as the priest,  shows good questioning  skills—he’s clarifying.        The candid admission by  Caderousse that for a  “short time” he felt  envious toward Dantes ups  his credibility and lessens  suspicion that he is hiding  something.        The priest’s searching  look does not seem to  bother or fluster  Caderousse and his quickly  inquiring if the priest knew  Dantes shows positive  regard toward Dantes.
