The HBKU Sustainable Energy master’s and Ph.D. programs provide students with extensive knowledge in topics related to sustainable energy and the impact urbanization, transportation and manufacturing have on energy sustainability. The programs also looks at the implications and drivers of sustainable policymaking on society, the economy and the environment.

Program Focus •
Master of Science in Sustainable Energy Curriculum A 34-credit full-time program, taught in English over two years that includes: • • • • • • •
Core course: Sustainability Fundamentals and Tools Core course: Research Methods and Ethics Core course: Elected Math Core (2 choices) Core course: Elected Computation Core (3 choices) 4 elective courses A 6-credit research thesis or an industrial/applied project 2 graduate research seminars
The master’s program can be customized to focus on different aspects of sustainable energy such as renewable energy systems, conventional energy systems, energy and mobility, energy and urbanization, and energy and environment.
Ph.D. in Sustainable Energy Curriculum A 68-credit program, taught in English, typically over 3 years (for students already possessing a master’s degree) that includes: • • • •
4 core courses 2 elective courses 6 semesters of graduate research seminars A 44-credit research thesis under the supervision of an adviser and a Ph.D. dissertation committee
Ph.D. students should additionally pass a qualifying examination in their third semester and successfully defend their thesis proposal in their fourth semester to their committee. Students without a master’s degree but with exceptional performance in an approved bachelor’s degree may be admitted to the Ph.D. program but will need to take an additional 24 credits of coursework.

Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree relevant to this program, which typically includes science and engineering disciplines. Additionally, backgrounds in economics, business, policy, and social sciences will be considered. Applicants should demonstrate strong evidence that they possess the qualities to become successful researchers and professionals. These include excellent performance in relevant coursework, past research results if any, and strong recommendation letters. Applicants with prior research experience are preferred, especially for the Ph.D. program.

Applicants to the Ph.D. program in Sustainable Energy are required to submit GRE exam results from within the last two years. Applicants coming from an economics, policy and other social science backgrounds may submit results of the GMAT exam as an alternative to the GRE. While not required for the Master’s programs the GRE/GMAT exam is recommended and will strengthen an applicant’s submission.

All applications are reviewed by the HBKU Sustainability Division Master’s/Ph.D. Graduate Program Committee (GPC), who will make the final decision regarding admission and waivers for any of the application requirements.

Letters of recommendation: Applicants should submit at least two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from an academic referee. Referees should send their letters of recommendation from their professional email directly to
[email protected]. Letters which are not directly written for this program or which are incomplete will not be accepted.

Personal statement of interest: Applicants should submit a personal statement as part of the online application. The personal statement should explain why the candidate is applying to the Sustainable Energy graduate program and how their studies will contribute to the achievement of their personal objectives including information about the applicant’s research interests and achievements. (500 word limit)

Resume/curriculum vitae: Applicants should submit a copy of their current resume or curriculum vitae as part of the online application. This should include the following information: Academic qualifications Professional experience Publications Research projects Academic awards or honors Conference presentations

Identification document: All applicants should submit an electronic copy of their passport as part of the online application. Nationals and Residents of Qatar should also submit their Qatari ID.
Applicants are required to take the IELTS or TOEFL exam in order to demonstrate their proficiency in English. Applicants who completed their bachelor’s degree at a university where the primary language of instruction is English may seek a waiver for this requirement. Please contact

Academic transcripts: Applicants should have original academic transcripts mailed directly to HBKU from the issuing institution. In addition, electronic copies should be submitted as part of the online application process to expedite the admissions process. Final transcripts are required for all previous university studies. For those who have not completed their current studies, transcripts must include results from the last completed semester of coursework. Transcripts in languages other than English or Arabic must be accompanied with an official translation. Please note all documents submitted will not be returned.
