Harvard University Laboratory for Particle Physics and Cosmology Seminar: “Searching for SUSY in Big Data at the LHC” Abstract: One of the most enticing and popular additions to the Standard Model of particle physics, Supersymmetry, is the target of a wide range of searches at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Recently, ATLAS and CMS resolved one of the longest standing discrepancies, where ATLAS saw a hint of a possible signal. This seminar will use that search as an example to show how these searches work, which assumptions can play important roles, and what can happen when the experiments don’t quite see eye to eye. There are still many ways Supersymmetry could have escaped detection up to now, and we will also point towards some of the next directions for searches for Supersymmetry at the LHC. Along the way, we will discuss some of the software and computing challenges that come with world-wide analysis of tens of billions of events, and how the experiments at the LHC are squeezing every drop out of their data.
