Welcome to the 2017-18 school year. The beginning of a new school year always brings with it an enormous amount of information that is useful for parents and students to know. This agenda serves as a handbook for retrieving that information. It contains guidelines put forth by West Wilson Middle School and the Wilson County School Board that students and parents should become familiar with to ensure a successful year. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations that students are expected to follow. Our students are required to have their agenda with them at all times. It is a valuable tool to use for organization as well as a means of communicating between parents, students, and teachers.

Wendell Marlowe, Principal Bethany Wilson, Assistant Principal 6 David Akins, Assistant Principal 7 Carmen Bouldin, Assistant Principal 8

In partnership with parents and the community, it is our mission to create a culture in which all students are actively engaged in rigorous, relevant learning to foster independent thinkers capable of success in further education, career, and life.

Student Handbook 2017 - 2018 Every student receives a handbook at the beginning of the year. This is a valuable tool, and we suggest that parents read all the information with their child. If the handbook is lost, a new one must be purchased for $5.00. Absences: The day a student returns to school following an absence, he/she should bring a note to the main office. It should be signed by the parent, state the reason for the absence, the dates of the absence, and the student's grade level. If the student is taken to the doctor, please provide a doctor's note as students are only allowed 5 parent notes per semester. Parent notes are turned into the main office. Arrival/Dismissal: The front doors are unlocked each morning at 7:45 for car riders. Bus riders will enter at the side of the building under the portico. Students report to the gym, cafeteria for breakfast, or the library. In the afternoon, all car riders are dismissed and exit through the front doors. Bus riders leave the building through the portico exit near the gym. Students are to be picked up in the car line only, not in the parking lat. During dismissal, cars are not to be left unattended in the car line. Please park in a marked parking space if you need to leave your car. Attendance: Students are expected to be present all day on each school day. WWMS will use the county calling program, School Messenger, to contact parents when a student is absent. Please keep the office informed of updated phone numbers and keep Skyward update with the most recent information. Breakfast: Breakfast is served each morning from 8:00-8:20 am. Students may eat at the first three rows of tables in the cafeteria. Students are to return to the gym after they finish and their eating area is clean. Early Dismissal: Due to weather or other emergencies, schools may be dismissed early. Please make sure you child knows what they are to do at dismissal in all circumstances. Grading System: Report cards are sent home at the end of each nine week grading period. A mid- nine week progress report will also be available in Skyward each grading period. The following grade scale is used by Wilson County Schools: A=100-93, B=92-85, C=84-75, D=74-70, F=69-below, I=incomplete Leaving Early: A Parent/Guardian must come into the main office to sign the student out of school. If the student is leaving with a person other than a guardian listed in Skyward, a note must be sent stating the parent's permission. A phone call will be made to the parent to verify early dismissal. Please try to make an effort to schedule appointments after regular school hours. Students miss quality time when away from class. Lockers/Locks: Lockers are assigned by the school. Students are encouraged to purchase a lock. Locks can also be purchased at school for $9.00. Students may not change lockers without permission from the administration. Each student is responsible for the care of his/her locker and is liable for any damage. Sharing lockers is prohibited. Backpacks are to be left in a locker and not taken to the classroom Library Hours: The library is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. Lunch: Lunch is served each day during 3rd and 4th period. There are 3 lunch lines: the store, and two traditional hot lunch lines. For more information about food services, go to www.wcschools.com, and click on Food and Nutrition. You can view menus, pricing, the online meal payment program, and other information. Missing Work Request: Requests for class work and/or homework due to a student absence should be made via email or phone call before 10:00 a.m. Teacher websites will be the most effective way to obtain assignments. Money Collection: Any purchase or payment made at the school, by check or cash, must be for the exact amount. Cash is not kept for change. The only exception is for breakfast or lunch. B

Office Phones: The main office phone will only be used for outgoing and incoming messages in urgent situations. Forgotten homework or P.E. clothes are not emergencies. Outside Food Items: No restaurant, fast food or drinks may be brought or delivered to the school for students. Also, no homemade or store bought deserts may be brought to school to share. The only exception is what a student brings in their lunch bag or box. Sick Students: If your child is sick, please do not bring them to school. If they get sick at school, students must go through the school nurse to contact a parent or guardian. Students are not permitted to use their cell phone during school hours. Student/Parent Information: It is very important that schools have updated information on all students and immediate family members. The school should be provided with changes and Skyward should be updated as soon as they occur for any of the following areas: Address, Phone Numbers (home, work, and cell), Custody Changes or Name Changes. Student Schedule: For academic or behavioral reasons, the school reserves the right to change a student's schedule as needed. Teacher Websites: Teacher websites are available by going to www.wcschools.com. Click on Schools, then Middle Schools, then WWMS, then Teachers, then the teacher’s name. Transportation Changes: If a student has written permission by their parent to ride a different bus, the note must be received by 10:00 am to allow the office staff time to call and verify the note. The school office must be notified no later than 3:00 pm to make a change in a student's transportation home. Visitors: While parents are always welcome at WWMS, we ask that an appointment be made to see a teacher, school counselor, or an administrator. To make an appointment, call the main office at 615-758-5152 or guidance at 615-758-9985. All visitors must report to the main office to sign in and receive a visitor's tag before going anywhere else in the building.

Extra-Curricular Activities: Below is a list of different groups and activities that may be offered to students to be involved in. If there is one that you do not want your child to participate in, please notify the guidance office in writing. 4-H
