October 11, 2017 Dear Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz: We, the students of Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon, thank you for being a model of stalwart leadership in a time of crisis. In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, you took each day’s challenges in stride, assessed those issues of gravest concern, and cast politics aside. You created and used your platform to defend the rights of the vulnerable, regardless of its impact on your reputation. You provided the necessary facts of the crisis with deliberate and forthright words, forcing our nation and the world to grapple with a looming humanitarian crisis of our own making. In the midst of intense suffering you walked through San Juan’s flooded streets, handed out solar lanterns to your citizens, but most of all you comforted them. At the same time, you coordinated relief efforts, oversaw distribution of supplies, and advocated for stronger U.S. support to lift San Juan’s residents out of crisis. Rather than use your power to isolate yourself from the devastation, you chose to wade through floodwaters, a hyper-partisan U.S. government, and logistical barriers in order to save as many lives as possible. Your courageous leadership in the streets of San Juan in the wake of Hurricanes Irma and Maria inspires our work and strengthens our resolve. Through such efforts, you faithfully embody Heinz College’s founding vision of “Educating men and women for intelligent action.” As students studying public policy, management, and information systems, we are compelled to lift our voices in solidarity with you and our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. News that most of the island may be without power until 2018 is unacceptable, and we urge Americans across the country to provide financial support to help those affected by Hurricanes Maria and Irma in the U.S. territories in the Caribbean. We firmly believe that a united response is required and any financial support we can provide these territories is critical moving forward. Heinz College students are committed to sustainable, long-term rebuilding efforts throughout the Caribbean and we look forward to engaging in a future dialogue regarding the ways in which we can be most helpful in this work. Thank you, Mayor Cruz, for being an exemplary leader whose “heart is in the work.” With our deepest respect, Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College Students & Alumni
