Notes for Playtesters Introduction Thank you for choosing to help playtest the Space Marines Legions army list. The goal of the production of this list is to play ‘historical recreation’ scenarios from the timeline of the Horus Heresy, in harmony with the Warhammer 40,000 Heresy supplement books published by Forgeworld, as well as balanced play between the armies of that time period. The Legion list is not designed to be balanced with standard Epic Armageddon armies, although for the purpose of playtesting, existing Imperial Guard, Adeptus Mechanicus and Titan Legion NetEA army lists will work as fine opponents, until such time as their own heresy-era lists are published. Just as Forgeworld are publishing volumes of three books as a theatre of war, I too would like to develop army lists and campaign supplements to coincide with their releases. The first stage of this will be the testing and production of the Legion list, from which any Legion can be proxied. The next stage will be working on supplement content for the Isstvan theatre of war, beginning with content for the battles of Isstvan III as a first release, moving onto Isstvan V as a second release, most likely adding a new army list for Titan Legions, with a third release to finish the Isstvan theatre campaign. Rather than waiting for all three books to be published before releasing an epic supplement, the supplement will be published in volumes, designed to be connected. Each campaign supplement will consist of missions, limited artwork and background that I hope the epic community will assist in providing- in any case, the epic army list is designed as an epic gaming aid to supplement the work of the Forgeworld team’s Heresy collection of books for Warhammer 40,000, used alongside a Warhammer 40,000 campaign if players wish, so it is suggested that players should purchase the Forgeworld books if they are interested in the background of the Horus Heresy campaign (or owning nice things!). As well as missions and campaign information, each supplement volume will contain Legion list supplemental modifications for the Legions and personalities present in the theatre- these will consist of specific primarch or personality rules to be used in place of the standard units, and additional or replacement units to be used within the Legion army list structure, as well as list construction modifications where appropriate. Playtesting Isstvan III The Legion army list can be fought between Legions using the standard epic tournament gaming scenario with some house rules for the time being as the easiest balance testing scenario. The feel of the game should be somewhat cinematic with massed astartes dropping from the skies to cut down their brothers in arms, so bearing in mind that in the Isstvan III missions battles will be ‘historical’, there will normally be one ‘attacking’ player and one ‘defending’ player. Games should be played at a larger point level than the standard 3000 points, if possible. I hope that in something like a 4000 point game, an attacking force will usually win versus a defending force- later on, this will be balanced by allowing the defending force to purchase stratagems such as defences and ambushes. An attacking army should make good use of transports, armour, aerial units, drop pods and storm birds if possible, and a house rule should be that the attacker cannot garrison, and must always try to win the take and hold objective, as a simulation of the missions that will be developed for Isstvan III. The defending player should be allowed to set up any garrisoned formation on overwatch, and make good use of troops, dreadnoughts, artillery, and limited use of armour, transports and air support, and not use titan support or teleports. It is a tough war for the defending player! But we want the battles to feel tough down to the last man. If we can achieve hard fought but losing battles with the defender, at the next stage of testing, we can test points-imbalanced forces, and defensive stratagems. Regular tournament scenario games playesting Legion versus Legion, or Legion versus Imperial Guard, Titan Legions or Adeptus Mechanicus armies are also encouraged, and may root out some flaws within the structure of the legion list. Please direct your playtesting feedback to Jayden at
[email protected] . Please include your army lists, a brief description of the battle, how it ‘felt’, and any comments that your playtesting group have that will aid in refining the legion list. I will be developing scenarios and rules for additional Legions in the mean time. Once all legions have been released for playtesting, work will begin on Adeptus Mechanicus and Titan Legions lists. Happy gaming!

Changelog 0.8.1 Some new units have been added in 0.7.0 that are not intended to be used in a core legion army list, but should be will be used with a specific named legion (namely two units, Predator Infernus: for this playtest document may be taken in place of Predator Destructors in a Salamanders Legion army; Glaive: may be taken as a squadron of three in place of a Fellblade squadron in an Iron Hands list). Feel free to try this for yourselves. The first supplement release will contain named legion rules for all of the legions covered in the Isstvan trilogy of books published by Forge World. Players will be able to choose to build their own Legion army using the core Legion army list, or construct their armies using a named Legion list, which will have a different detachment structure and some special units. General: Added Iron Hands and World Eaters Legions Army lists and units Demigod definition updated Changed artillery support restrictions Added Breacher Siege Detachment Changed Storm Eagle upgrade to Assault Claw upgrade Storm Eagles changes to aircraft Changed Sicaran battle tank squadron to 0-6 units Disrupt added to Neutron Laser Glaive added to Super Heavy Tank detachment (note: the decision to leave it available as a single tank only in the basic Legion list is deliberate, as other detachment options will be available to specific legion lists.) The Horus Heresy: The Death of Isstvan III An Epic Armageddon Supplement by J.Barr V 0.8.1
1.0 Heresy Legion Rules: 1.1 Space Marine Legion Transports
The Space Marines are a highly mobile army. Because of this, the points cost of a detachment usually includes enough Rhino transport vehicles to transport it and any upgrades that have been taken. Determine the number of Rhinos needed after all upgrades have been purchased. The number of Rhinos will always be the minimum needed to carry the detachment; you can’t take extras along to cover any losses! Note that many detachments don’t receive Rhinos, usually because they can’t fit into them. Detachments that come with Rhinos will be noted as having ‘plus transport’ in the units section of the army list below. Also note that you don’t have to take Rhinos if you don’t want to. If you’d rather field the formation on foot instead, so it can act as a garrison for example, or be transported in a Thunderhawk Gunship, or upgrade to a different mode of transport, then you may do so. In addition, you may choose to replace a detachment’s Rhinos with Drop Pods, or select the Drop Pods detachment upgrade. If you do this, then the detachment will enter play in a Drop Pod using the rules for Planetfall (see Epic Armageddon rulebook section 4.4). Note that if you choose to do this, The entire detachment must be allowed to deploy via drop pod (units that are taken as Legion Upgrades that are otherwise allowed to take a drop pod Detachment Upgrade count as being able to deploy via drop pod without having to pay an extra cost). You will also require at least one Legion Strike Cruiser or Battle Barge to deploy the drop pods from. Choosing transport options is part of the army selection process. Portions of a formation may be left behind during deployment (to garrison, for example) the decision to exchange options, even “free” ones, must be determined when the army list is determined.
1.2 Exploratory Augury Web:
Enemy detachments entering play via Planetfall within 15cm of a unit with Exploratory Augury Web must roll a d6 for each unit in in the detachment, taking a blast marker for each 1 rolled. Friendly units entering play via Teleport within 15cm of a friendly unit with Exploratory Augury Web do not need to roll for blast markers.
1.3 Demigod
A character with the Demigod special rule confers the following rules to the unit it upgrades: Supreme Commander, Fearless, Inspiring, Invulnerable Save, Reinforced Armour, as well as upgrading the armour save of the unit by +1. A Demigod unit has a damage capacity of three, Each hit that is not saved will reduce the Demigod's damage capacity by 1 point, and the demigod unit is only destroyed once its damage capacity is reduced to 0 (do not roll one attack per DC in an engagement as if a war engine). Do not place blast markers on the Demigod's unit for any damage capacity lost by the Demigod, but if the Demigod unit is removed as a casualty, its formation immediately becomes broken and any friendly formations within 30cm must take two additional blast markers. A Demigod unit counts as a Terminator unit when determining transport capacity.
1.4 Feedback
If a unit firing a weapon with the Feedback rule fails to cause damage when hitting an enemy unit, roll a D6 for every successful armour save the enemy unit made. The firing unit takes a blast marker for each 1 rolled.
1.5 Imperial Void Shields
Imperial Titans are protected by void shield generators. The number of void shields each Titan has is noted on the Titan’s datasheet. Each void shield will automatically stop one point of damage and then go down. Do not make armour saves for damage stopped by void shields, nor allocate Blast markers. Once all of the shields have been knocked down, the Titan may be damaged normally and you may make saving throws against any hits that are scored. Hits from close combat ignore void shields but units using their firefight values must first knock down any shields before they can damage the Titan. Void shields that have been knocked down can be repaired. Each Titan can repair one downed void shield in the end phase of each turn. In addition, if a Titan regroups it can use the dice roll to either repair the void shield or remove Blast markers (e.g., if you rolled a 2 you could repair 2 shields, remove 2 Blast markers or repair 1 shield and remove 1 Blast marker).
1.6 Legiones Astartes
Space Marines are renowned for their tenacity and bravery. This is represented by the following rules, which apply to all Space Marine Legion units (Adeptus Mechanicus, Titan Legion and Imperial Navy units are excluded): * It takes 2 Blast markers to suppress a Space Marine Legion unit or kill a unit in a broken formation (ignore any leftover Blast markers). * Space Marine Legion formations are only broken if they have 2 Blast markers per unit in the formation. * Space Marine Legion formations only count half their number of Blaster markers in assault resolution (rounding down – note that assault resolution will not receive +1 for having no Blast markers if the formation has 1 Blast marker before rounding down). Halve the number of extra hits suffered by a Space Marine Legion formation that loses an assault, rounding down in favour of the Space Marines. * When a broken Space Marine Legion formation rallies, it receives a number of Blast markers equal to the number of units, rather than half this number. Space Marines with the Leader special ability remove 2 Blast markers instead of 1.
2.0 Space Marine Legion armies
Space Marine Legion armies have a Strategy Rating of 5. All Space Marine Legion and Titan Legion formations have an Initiative rating of 1+. Imperial Navy and Adeptus Mechanicus formations have an Initiative rating of 2+. Three Space Marine Legion Support Detachments may be chosen for each Space Marine Legion Detachment. Detachments may choose up to three Legion Upgrades- each upgrade can only be chosen once per detachment. Only one type of transport upgrade may be chosen per detachment Up to 1/3 of the army’s points value may be spent on Allies and Lords Of War. Units

Leader, Invulnerable Save, Tech Priest Expendable, Invulnerable Save Invulnerable Save, Tech Priest Reinforced Armour, Thick Rear Armour Reinforced Armour, Thick Rear Armour, Tech Priest, Supreme Commander, Fearless, Inspiring, Invulnerable Save. A Primarch unit has a damage capacity of three, Each hit that is not saved will reduce the Primarch's damage capacity by 1 point, and the unit is only destroyed once its damage capacity is reduced to 0 (do not roll one attack per DC in an engagement as if a war engine). Do not place blast markers on the Primarch’s formation for any damage capacity lost by the Primarch, but if the Primarch unit is removed as a casualty, its formation immediately becomes broken and any friendly formations within 30cm must take two additional blast markers. A Primarch unit counts as a Terminator unit when determining transport capacity.
Iron Hands Special Rules 4.6.1 Expendable
Some units are seen by their allies as ablative or just plain disposable. This may be because the units are specifically created to sacrifice themselves, because the units are simply not valued, or for a number of other reasons. A formation does not receive a Blast marker when a unit with Expendable is destroyed, this includes the extra Blast marker from the first casualty of a crossfire and for units destroyed for being out of formation after a move. If an expendable unit is hit by a weapon with Disrupt it does not inflict a Blast marker. If a formation is comprised completely of expendable units then they do not benefit from any of the rules above. Expendable units killed in an assault count for the purposes of working out its result (see EA 1.12.7).
4.6.2 Cybernetica Cortex
Formations containing units with the Cybernetica Cortex rule suffer a -1 initiative penalty if there are no friendly units with the Tech Priest special rule within 15 cm of the formation.
4.6.3 Tech Priest
Each tech priest unit may roll once at the end of the rally phase (so long as the formation does not remain broken) to attempt to repair one AV unit or one War Engine DC from its own formation. On a roll of 6+, One war engine DC or one unit is returned to play (war engine units return to play with one DC remaining) and is placed anywhere within valid unit coherency. Units that were destroyed by a Titan Killer weapon may never be returned to play.
