Format Approximately A2 / A1 size, for poster and pocket format. Preferably one sided with text and images interspersed in an attractive visual style around a map of the area. The ‘Highlights’ of the route Landmark Fairlop Waters

Aldborough – Dick Turpin

Aldborough Hatch – St Peter’s Church

Description The enamel pictures under Fairlop Station bridge direct to Barkingside to the right and Fairlop to the left. Fairlop Waters was home of the Fairlop Oak and Fairlop Fair from 18th century and was equally popular over the years with royalty and local people enjoying traditional games and sports. It was an airfield in World Wars 1 and 2, home of Harry Jassby, the famous WW1 pilot (see below) and for Spitfires and being part of the London wide balloon barrage in WW2 before losing out to Heathrow as London’s main airport. Fairlop Waters is now a popular leisure park with golf, sailing and climbing. The butcher, Dick Turpin most likely became involved with the Essex Gang of deer thieves in the early 1730s extending their area of plunder from Royal Waltham Forest across Chingford and down to Barking. His legacy is represented with the Dick Turpin pub, which dates back to 1912, despite the onslaught of V2 bombs in WW2 which caused damage to the building in 1944. St Peter’s church was designed by Arthur Ashpitel in the mid 1800s in a 13th century style at the hatch (gateway) to the forest to serve the growing population as farmers as deforestation took place after the 1851 Act. It retains panelling and the processional cross from neighbouring Little Heath chapel. Some of the barns and Aldborough House Farm date back to a similar era, while in the graveyard rests WW1 pilot, Harry Jassby, in a rare example of a Jewish grave within a Christian burial area. Harry was a Canadian volunteer who tragically died a few days before armistice.

Barkingside Station

Originally opened in 1903 on the Great Eastern Railway branch line from Woodford to Hainault, Barkingside station was a response to the suburban growth, it was electrified as part of the “New Works Programme” of the London Passenger Transport Board and added to the Central line in 1947. The station is an attractive grade 2 listed building.

Tanners Lane / Mossford Green

At the junction of Station Road you turn into Tanners Lane and Mossford Green. Until the expansion of Barkingside, the main occupation of the inhabitants was agriculture and some of the original 19th century cottages, Pert Cottages and Sandringham Gardens can still be seen. Tanning was an early industry in the town, probably dating back to the 15th century and offering its name to Tanners Brook (probably located around north Cranbrook) and Tanners Lane. After visiting Barnardo’s (see below), you will see Chequers and the police station at the junction of the High Street. The police station was originally placed in the Trinity Church priory and there are tales of a passage connecting the police station with the magistrates court (although highly unlikely to be true!). Sitting opposite the police station, Chequers was briefly known as ‘Ye Olde Investigator’ before reverting to its prior name and was intersected by the busy tramroutes of the 691 and 693 which made their way down to Ilford via Horns Lane and Ley Street. Trinity Church is one of the oldest remaining buildings in the area dating back to 1840. Barnardos was founded by an Irishman, Dr Thomas Barnardo, who was born in Dame Street, Dublin. On the 21st November 1866, a boy called Jim Jarvis came to be Thomas Barnardo’s first resident and became one of the reasons that Thomas did not go to China and started him on his life’s work with Children. Originating in Stepney in rescuing children from the horrors of the poorer parts of London, Barnardo’s set up a girl’s home at his home at Mossford Lodge in 1873 and by 1880, there were 26 homes, each with their own ‘House Mother’.The unique ‘Children’s Church’ was finished in 1892, designed in the popular Pugin inspired gothic style {check}, the clock tower in 1887, schools in 1893 and the Australasian Hospital in 1912. By 1964 there were 60 cottages but gradually, the location has become more important as the headquarters of the organisation. Prior to the growth of the railways and the consequent growth in housing, Barkingside would have been made up of farmland and stately homes including Tomswood, Mossford Green, Greater and Little Gearies and St Swithin’s. St. Swithins farm and Carswell House was home to the Hatton family. The Hatton and Carwell name can still be seen in the names of local schools and roads in Clayhall off Roding Lane South just beyond the Woodford Avenue. The areas of Barkingside and Clayhall are now extensively covered by attractive, predominantly interwar houses and bungalows.

Barnardo’s

From farmland to high quality housing (‘The Hattons of St Swithin’s Farm’)

The Hatton name has long been associated with the area. In the mid17th century, Sir Christopher Hatton, cousin of the Lord Chancellor of the same name, lived at Clayhall and built a private chapel there1.

1

Sir Christopher Hatton was the king’s remembrance between 1616 and 1619 spending much of his adult life on the estate he leased at Clayhall in Essex, a few miles from the seat of his brother-in-law Thomas Fanshawe I. Consistently active in Essex affairs, he built a chapel near Clayhall. He died suddenly on 10 Sept. 1619 and was buried in Lord Chancellor Hatton’s vault at Westminster Abbey on the following day, and administration of his estate was granted to his wife on 15 September. Hatton’s widow sold Clayhall for about £1,000 to the customs farmer Sir John Wolstenholme, the father-in-law of her brother William Fanshawe.

Fullwell Cross (State Fullwell Cross takes its name from the preaching cross that was the Cinema and the site for outdoor services conducted by monks from Barking Abbey Fairlop Oak pub) prior to the construction of the church. It was home to State Cinemas from 1938, designed by the renowned architect, George Coles and advertised as a ‘Cathedral of Motion Picture Arts’ and included a luxury ballroom. It had various owners until after the war where it was acquired by ABC who operated it from 1948. In closed on 4th December 1976 with Christina Lindberg in the ‘banned’ Swedish film ‘Exposed’ and ‘Sex Rally’ and briefly reopened between 1978-1984 before it finally closed for good. Bingo has been operating since 1972 below a false ceiling on the ground floor and it is thought that the original art deco / art moderne décor is still in existence above. The Fairlop Oak is a more recent addition but is a good place to finish the tour following a trip to the town square. Frederick Gibberd Sir Frederick Gibberd, more famous for designing Harlow, built the and the new town grade 2 listed Fullwell Cross library and leisure centre (unlisted) in square 1968. The town square reflects many of the ideas of the original scheme including the colour and geometry of the loggia arches. An exhibition can be seen in the space on the blank frontage to the leisure centre along the High Street. …more…?

Questions 1. Do you have ‘landmarks’, historical stories and quirky incidents, destinations, lives of celebrities or ordinary people that you would like to add to the list? 2. Do you have pictures which could be used for this heritage trail? 3. Do you have any other ideas which would improve this heritage trail?
