Hermit Crabs

Hermit Crabs Introduce your hermit crabs with these wonderful video links! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tg3Pr4wWiUc&scrlybrkr=f0e03768 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fG99gofOnPg&scrlybrkr=f0e03768 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1dnocPQXDQ&scrlybrkr=f0e03768

My local Petco along with a parent of one of my students donated both crabs and everything I needed. I was so surprised. This all started because I just asked about how much they would cost. I had no idea this would all come about.

This gave my class a great opportunity to learn about Hermit Crabs right along with me.

Meet Hermie and Coral… and their crabitat!

Hermit Crab Hermit Crabs are also known as tree crabs. They like to climb. They live in coastal regions in all the oceans. Hermit crabs live in shells left by other animals. They do not grow their own shells. When they get too big for their shell, they move to a new one! They need the shell to protect their soft underbody. Hermit crabs are omnivores. They eat almost anything they can find. They eat fish, worms, plankton and other things found in the ocean. Since they are so small, they have many predators such as shark, fish, squid and octopus. If you plan to have a hermit crab as a pet they take special care. They need a large tank with deep sand and coconut fiber so they can molt. It needs to be warm and humid because hermit crabs breathe through their modified gills, not lungs like us. They store water in their shell. Lastly, they need to have friends! They get lonely when they are by themselves. ©L. Moldenhauer @ www.littlepriorities.blogspot.com 2016
