Highl and Ter ra ce Fa mil y a nd Frien ds are i nvi ted May 9 ,2 011 a t 6 : 30p m Our very own Ms. Edy, 4th Grade teacher at Highland Terrace, has been selected as the 2011 Shoreline School District Teacher of the Year. She will be honored at a reception at 6:30pm on Monday, May 9th in the Shoreline Center lobby, which is located at 18560 1st Ave N.E. All family, friends, and students are invited to come. Ms. Edy has taught in Shoreline for 29 years overall, and at Highland Terrace since 1996. She has also taught at Brookside, Echo Lake, North City and Ridgecrest during her career. "Becky is an extraordinary teacher who creates individualized learning experiences for all of her students in a highly personalized and caring environment," her nomination read in part. "She is adored by her students, valued by parents and admired by her colleagues. On top of it all, Becky is a lifelong learner; she is always looking for new and better ways to provide the best education possible for her students." Her lifelong learning has included teaching in Shanghai and a 2008 University of Washington summer fellowship to Jordan. She has served on numerous school and District committees, including elementary reading, math and writing curriculum adoptions, the Puget Sound Writing Project and is a Highland Terrace “Response to Intervention” coach. We hope to see you all there to celebrate Ms. Edy receiving this award. MSP Te s ting May 2 n d - May 1 9 th Students in grades 3-6 will be tested using the “Measurements of Student Progress” or MSP (formerly WASL). Testing begins each morning at 9:30am and ends at 11:30am. Parents / guardians can provide support to their students by assuring that they arrive at school on time, with a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast so that they are ready to make their very best effort on their assessment. Please be sure that your student is on time/present at school and that no outside appointments are made during their testing dates. If a student is absent from school, they will be required to make up the assessment they missed. Highl and Ter ra ce Ele men tary Stude nt Cla s s P la ce men ts for th e 20 10- 11 Sch ool Yea r The time has come to begin thinking about classroom placements at Highland Terrace Elementary for the 2011-12 school year. We do not know yet which teachers will be teaching the different grade levels and probably will not know final teacher assignments until late August. However, we will begin working on classroom groupings in June. To better meet the needs of every child at Highland Terrace, our goal is to carefully create balanced classes according to boy/girl ratio, academic performance, social-emotional development, leadership abilities, special learning needs, and independent work habits. Parents know their student best. The more information we have, the better decisions we are able to make regarding building balanced classes. Please do not hesitate to share any information with us that you think might be helpful. We spend a great deal of time looking at each child’s individual needs when creating balanced classes. Any information that you would like us to consider when determining your child’s placement must be submitted to Mr. VanOrden at mi ke .va n ord en @ sh or eline sc h ools .org n o l ate r th an Frida y , Ma y 27 th. Submitting information after the deadline means that it might not be possible to take that information into consideration. We do not accept requests for specific teachers. Hillwood Soccer Club in Shoreline invites kids 5 to 18 to come and experience the fun of soccer! Registration for the fall soccer season will start May 25th to July 15 th. Dale Turner YMCA “After the Bell” program for 7th and 8th graders during the 2011-12 school year. This program is for teens attending Einstein Middle School. Each day, students take a Shoreline School District bus to a stop near the Y where a staff member meets the group. Staff walk together with students to the Y, have a healthy snack and check in about the day. Staff spends time working with the teens on homework and doing a range of activities from arts and crafts, cooking, rock climbing and swimming! There is a cost, but financial assistance is available. The program is from June 20th through August 29th from 6:30am to 6:30pm. There is a nonrefundable registration fee of $30 per new enrollee. Summer themes include “Bugs-critters, creepy crawlers and climbers”, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”, “Ripley’s Believe it or Not – records, challenges, and games”, “Space Jam-sports fun for everyone”, and “Under the Seat- dive, swim, explore.” Call 206-393-4256 for registration and more information.

Highland Terrace Walk-A-Thon will be held on Thursday, May 19 . This year, pledges and donations will go towards HopeLink, a non-profit organization since 1971. Hopelink has served homeless and low-income families, children, seniors and people with disabilities. Hopelink's mission is to promote self-sufficiency for all members of our community making lasting change. The Walk-A-thon will start at 2:00pm so that all students may participate, except for 6th Grade students who will be at Camp during this time. We need about 40 parents to assist with this event. If you can help, please return the form with your student on or before Monday, May 16th. Mr. Davies will conduct a short training in the Gym at 1:00pm on Thursday, May 19th. Thank you!
