Hip-Hop’s Consumer Demographics Mike D’Errico UCLA Musicology and Digital Humanities Research question To what extent did hip-hop’s “golden age” mark both a social and stylistic shift in the production and reception of the music? More broadly, how has the global proliferation of the music affected social and economic consumer demographics? Why understanding it would be useful The meteoric rise of hip-hop around the world since the release of “Rapper’s Delight” (oft-claimed to be the first hip-hop record) has been a topic of interest to music scholars across disciplines for the past two decades. Key texts such as Bakari Kitwana’s Why White Kids Love Hip-Hop and M.K. Asante’s It’s Bigger Than Hip-Hop, among others, have dealt specifically with the question of how consumer demographics have been affected by the increasing globalization of the music. As recent controversies such as Miley Cyrus’ twerking and Baauer’s perceived appropriation of a local dance craze with the “Harlem Shake” attest, concerns over cultural property and racial identity are at the forefront of popular music studies and cultural studies even more broadly. How does Music Industry Data answer the research question? Comparing trends in the 1991 hip-hop charts across countries shows that different nations valued different cultural aesthetics and production practices, although at comparable chart positions. For example, in the United States groups like A Tribe Called Quest, N.W.A., De La Soul, and EPMD were popular, while in Japan groups like L.L. Cool J, Heavy D and the Boyz, Queen Latifah, and M.C. Hammer were popular.

A Selection of Hip-Hop Albums in the U.S. Billboard 200 (1991)

A Selection of Hip-Hop Tracks in the Tokyo Hot 100 (1991) This data begins to suggest that a linear narrative for the proliferation of hip-hop (i.e. that it came from the U.S. and spread Internationally in a direct pattern of influence) is incorrect. In the same year—what may be considered the midpoint of the “golden age” of hip-hop—audiences were enjoying widely varied forms, styles, and practices within the genre, suggesting the need for localized hip-hop histories and genealogies, rather than an overarching global narrative. Unfortunately, racial and localized geographic demographics (i.e. at the state or regional level) cannot be gleaned from the Music Industry Data charts. For this, I would suggest digging into the database of journals and other academic resources that Music Industry Data has compiled for the user.

What elements of the answer would not have been possible without Music Industry Data? Without the chart data that Music Industry Data provides, the specificity of hip-hop styles, as well as the trends in commercial consumption, could only be gleaned by two methods: (1) mining libraries or archives for popular music periodicals from the early 1990s, and (2) relying on word of mouth and personal testimony. 5. Consider the benefits of this kind of research for scholars and students in interdisciplinary settings: What are the benefits to faculty? For hip-hop scholars and faculty, this data provides easy access to quantitative research that may help to debunk common misconceptions or blindly accepted historical genealogies about the influence of hip-hop on a global scale. In developing courses, teachers may find the information useful in facilitating case study-based approaches to the analysis and interpretation of hip-hop music and culture. The question arises: how can the qualitative data of Music Industry Data supplement, or even contradict, public discourse surrounding this music that has been going on for the past thirty years? What are the benefits to students? For students, this data is useful in providing a much more detailed global perspective on the music than currently exists through other outlets. Hip-Hop is a highly contested cultural terrain, and its fans are often highly localized not only by country, but by region as well. The qualitative data of Music Industry Data can help to balance insider knowledge with broader trends in cultural consumption. What interdisciplinary impact does it have? The incorporation of commercial “big data” on a global scale asks the music scholar to think outside of the strict Humanist agenda of hermeneutic and semiotic interpretation, toward a broader methodology that borrows from disciplines such as the social sciences, economics, and information studies. Combining these approaches will bring the scholar in much closer contact with emerging subfields such as the Digital Humanities, and other transdisciplinary approaches that have employed qualitative and empirical practices.
