THE HOOTIE HOO Kappa Kappa Gamma | John Carroll University | Eta Zeta Chapter

This past year, Eta Zeta showed our Panhellenic involvement by supporting the other sororities on campus in their Philanthropy fundraisers and other events. Some of these include Chi Omega’s Taco Takeout for the Make-A-Wish foundation, Kappa Alpha Theta’s Chipotle Fundraiser benefitting CASA, Kappa Delta’s Annual Shamrock Pancake Breakfast for Prevent Child Abuse America, and Gamma Phi Beta’s G Phi Joe fundraiser. We had the following girls involved on the Panhellenic board: Panhellenic Delegate: Laura Gagliano Pi Chi’s: Mariah White Hannah Suttles

Panhellenic Involvement

A Letter from the President 2014 was a wonderful year for the women of Eta Zeta! The Spring semester was full of fun activities such as mixers with other chapters and two dances, including our annual formal, Sapphire Ball. We also had a wonderful time participating in the campus-wide Greek Week games! This was a chance for us to come together as a chapter and work as a team, while making memories for a lifetime. Parents came to campus to celebrate our annual Parents Brunch, giving them an opportunity to hear about Kappas’s accomplishments and honoring our seniors. To end the Spring semester, we gathered for our Reading Day picnic as a way to relax from the stresses of final exams. Once the school year came to an end, Eta Zeta attended the biannual national convention along with other Kappa chapters around the country in Houston, Texas. At the national convention, the Eta Zeta chapter received the Most Outstanding New Member Program Award for our ability to welcome New Members into the Kappa family. Once returning to school in the Fall, we participated in formal recruitment on campus. We were proud to welcomed 18 beautiful women into our chapter! Shortly after, we gathered as a chapter to put on our annual philanthropy event, Kappasta, where we raised money for the Reading Is Fundamental Foundation. Finally, we ended the Fall semester with perhaps the most wonderful and beautiful aspect of Kappa Kappa Gamma—Initiation. These New Members were officially installed as women of Kappa Kappa Gamma and learned of the special ritual that unites us all. I was extremely proud to lead such a wonderful group of women this past year as President. Each one of these girls brings something special and unique to the Eta Zeta sisterhood. Thank you for a truly amazing year!

Bid Day 2014

New Members

Recruitment This year during recruitment, Kappa gave bids to 19 amazing new members, meeting the quota that PanHellenic Council set. From Friday to Saturday, 98% of the girls we invited back chose to come back. From Saturday to Sunday, 71% came back, setting a new record for our sorority! While we had great statistics, that’s not the only thing that made recruitment weekend a great time. Throughout the weekend, everyone kept positive attitudes and enjoyed some little surprises! We got goody bags from the Cleveland Alumnae Association, shared fun jokes between rounds, and implemented a “Secret Sister” program so

Welcoming Our Newest Members Our Informal New Members before Pledge-In

Following formal recruitment held from September 19-21, 2014, this year’s new member program kicked off at a “Flower Power” themed bid day where we welcomed eighteen wonderful new members into our chapter. During the bid day festivities, the new members and active members got the chance to bond by painting flower pots and having henna tattoos painted on them. Throughout the eight-week new member program, the girls participated in many events including Owl Pal, where we painted pumpkins, Kappa Kousin, where we created mini canvas paintings, a speed-dating event with sisters on the Kappa floor, a New Member Retreat, New Member dinners, big/little reveal, and weekly New Member presentations. Each of these activities provided an opportunity for the New Members to get to know one another and the other active members in the chapter. On November 16, 2014, all 18 members were initiated, including four legacies. In the spring of 2015, informal recruitment was held to raise the number of members in our chapter. During this time we were fortunate to gain two additional chapter members. They participated in a shortened New Member program, but were still able to have events such as Owl Pal, Kappa Kousin, weekly New Member presentations, a New Member Retreat, and big/little reveal. On March 28, 2015, these two women were initiated at Carnegie Mellon University. The New Member classes of Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 have already proven to be wonderful additions to our chapter and we are very excited to see the great things that they will do for Eta Zeta in the future! Welcome home! Loyally, Olivia Tomsick

Spring 2015

Our Sisterhood Our sisterhood has grown over the past year and continues to grow each and every day. Every time we welcome more sisters into our chapter, we are reminded of what made us join Kappa in the first place and what it means to know that these sisters will continue to be in our lives forever. Planned sisterhood events like going to Patterson's for apple picking and cider, making gingerbread houses at Christmas time, or stuffing our faces with sweets at a Valentine's Day party are great, but being a sister means so much more. While the planned events are wonderful memories, impromptu trips to Starbucks or the mall mean infinitely more. Knowing that when you are having a bad day or are in need of a distraction from your overwhelming To-Do list that comes with this crazy college life, over 60 girls are there to lend a hand, crack a joke and make you smile. It's the small moments that we take for granted that never leave us. Our ritual is another aspect of our sisterhood that binds us not only to the women in our own chapter, but also to Kappas across the globe. The far reaching support system that Kappa gives us makes the real world a little less frightening, because no matter where you go, there will be another women in the blue and blue not far from you. Since I have a biological sister, I have known the close bond that comes with having someone who will stick with you through everything. And, though the bond with my Kappa sisters is slightly different, I've found the differences are quite insignificant. I trust these women to accept me despite my many faults and help me to grow into a woman who can make a positive impact on the world. As Kappa's motto says, we aspire to be the good we wish to see in the world. Each day deepens the bonds I have with my sisters. Just as we said in Recruitment this year, the best journey takes you home. Eta Zeta is my family and these girls are my home. Loyally, Marina Sendek

Spring 2015

Events Our chapter had a lot of fun events gong on this year. In the spring, we had our annual Sapphire Ball at a nice restaurant in downtown Kappapalooza 2014

Cleveland, Massimo Da Milano. Shortly after was Greek Week for the whole campus. Before each day's event, we mixed with a different fraternity or sorority. Greek Week mixers are always a favorite! We also had a Tie Dye Mixer in the spring with Delta Tau Delta. In the fall, we had a few more mixers. The outdoor campfire mixer with Lambda Chi Alpha was a favorite with s'mores and hot dog roasting. We also mixed with Sigma Phi Epsilon and had a pancake brunch on a Sunday morning. For our big date dance, we had Kappapalooza. It was music festival/ Woodstock themed and the girls looked amazing in their flower crowns! Loyally,

Philanthropy and Service

Jen and Shannon on an Immersion Trip

The women of Eta Zeta have truly lived out the John Carroll mission of being “women for others” this year! To begin the spring semester, the chapter hosted a fingerprint art booth at Danie’s Day: a campus-wide event for children and adults with Down’s Syndrome. We spent an evening in downtown Cleveland with Labre, bringing hot meals and conversation to the homeless. We also volunteered at Montefiore Assisted Living Home, where we helped the elderly celebrate Purim with a carnival complete with games and prizes. We finished the school year with Jesuit Day of Service at the end of Greek Week, participating in service projects across the greater-Cleveland area.

We began the fall semester with another exciting Kappasta event to raise money for Reading is Fundamental. Our chapter enjoyed spending time with family and friends while serving pasta dinners. We raised over 1,400 dollars to donate to RIF. We also hosted a Reading is Key event at the Cleveland Boys and Girls Club. After reading a Thanksgiving story aloud to the children, we played bingo and created hand-turkeys. At the end of the event, every child was able to leave with a book of their choice, and many books were also donated to the Boys and Girls Club. Our chapter also participated in Through the Eyes of a Child, a day full of Christmas fun for children of the Cleveland area. We colored and assisted the kids as they waited in line to meet Santa. In addition to these chapter-wide events, most of the women of Eta Zeta also participated in service on their own, both in the local community and across the world. Most women have thoroughly exceeded the fivehour minimum service requirement per semester, from participating in weekly service at John Carroll to attending immersion trips in other countries. As the philanthropy chair, I was personally inspired by each woman’s commitment to service, and selflessness in giving of her time and energy. Truly, 2014 was a successful year for philanthropy.
