PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pittsburgh Rowing Team held their own against top tier competitors at the annual Head of the Schuylkill Regatta (HOSR). Coming off of a strong start to the fall season at the Head of the Ohio Regatta in Pittsburgh, the team looked to continue the success. Entering in a wide array of categories with both sculling and sweeping boats of all sizes, the rowers demonstrated their quintessential Pitt Crew diligence. “Our performance at HOSR really showed the grit that Pitt Crew is all about. In comparison to previous years, it’s safe to say we’ve moved up the ladder as a club when racing against some D1 powerhouse schools,” said Phill Regina, varsity men’s team captain. “I think this race has solidified our confidence in the momentum we are building and I’m excited to see how it affects our training and future regattas.” In the competitive eights categories, the team was resilient in an extreme head-wind. Both the men’s and women’s novice eights finished in the upper half of the field against tough competitors like Drexel and Temple, with the novice women placing 8th out of 31 boats. The varsity men also had an extremely strong showing, placing 11th out of 38 boats behind some division one giants. Pitt Crew novice women charging down the course
The varsity women, who chose to take a break from racing eights at the Philly regatta, performed well in both pairs and fours. The women’s pair of Mary Donahue and Claire Marshalek placed 5th out of 21 boats and in the 4+ category the duo teamed up with Rebecca Huang, Kristi Bushman and coxswain Maggie Crotty to take 6th out of 41 boats.
The rest of the Pitt Crew fours similarly had solid performances for the day. The novice men’s 4+ barreled down the course to secure a third-place finish and a bronze medal, with the novice women and varsity men finishing in the upper third of competitors.

Pitt Crew also entered a number of boats in sculling events. Racing against world caliber national athletes, Kristi Bushman and Katie Murray powered out strong races in the lightweight and open women’s singles. Current Pitt Crew president Brendan Luksik teamed up with former president and alumnus Anthony Ascoli in the lightweight doubles to reel in a second place finish and silver medal for the team. Pitt Crew continues to perform increasingly well at HOSR against some top tier teams in the east, each year upping the team’s placing and medal count. With one race left for the fall, the Pitt rowers look forward to competing at the Head of the Occoquan Regatta in Virginia for a solid end to the fall season.
