How to Posterize

1. Find a photo file that you want to work with, it should be a .jpeg, .png, or .tif file. I’ll be using my glorious face for this tutorial… so handsome. Go to the start menu in the lower left hand corner of your desktop and click on the All Programs option. 2. Go to Adobe Design Standard CS6> Adobe Photoshop CS6. (From here on out every set of menu commands will be written out in this commons shorthand format. For instance, step one could have been written Start Menu> All Programs.) Once Photoshop is open go to File> Open and open your image file. 3. Go to Image> Adjustments> Black & White. When the black and white dialogue box opens up (that’s the window that pops open when you click on Black and White in the Adjustments menu) you can adjust the sliders to change the look of your now black and white photo and click OK.

4. Go to Image> Adjustments> Posterize.

5. Adjust the slider to whatever number of steps you desire, try and keep it between 4-10 steps.

6. Go to File> Print to open the Print dialogue box, when it opens make sure you check the Scale to Fit Media checkbox. If you do not do this your reference will not print out full page. Also make sure you print to the printer labeled 201- BW, that is the art computer lab printer. Make sure you save your image as either a .jpeg or .psd somewhere on your name should you need to open it and print it again. You are free to print out more than one copy for safe keeping. You may use any method to transfer your image to your canvas, it is recommended however that you use a grid method.
