Hoya Coronal Column Types by Dale Kloppenburg The Gynostegia Column (surrounding the ovaries on its inside) has a variable surface area as it slopes inward toward the lower coronal lobe surfaces. So far I can divide the surfaces into 4 distinct types, and possible more rare types; in addition there are some species where the column is closely surrounded by the corona ventral lobes (5): 1. Surface slick, smooth, glabrous (the majority of species). 2. Surface with pubescent or stellate hair cells. 3. Surface with varying degrees and complexities of raised protrusions, from simple to very complex. 4. The one rare one has a granulate (papillate) surface. 5. Coronal lobes closely appressed to the column.
I would like to have data on all hoya species, I have only a few and since I did not notice this character earlier my photos of hoya parts, did not concentrate of the feature. Below is what I have, please add to this data if you can.
Central column
This is a bottom view of a corona. In many hoya species (not all) the edges of each coronal scale turn under and are rolled inward to form a channel (most often referred to as a groove and sometimes as sulcate). The edges of the scale mostly touch each other and there is a hollow formed on each side. These edges, as here, may only come in slightly from where the adjacent scales meet (the sinus and where the anther wings are located) or may extend into the central column. There are distinct surfaces surrounding the central channel, nothing (smooth) as in the photo above, hirsute, or with bulbous protrusions or (possibly punctate), punctate, and no area showing around column (the latter can be divided into a: column closely appressed by the coronal lobes and b: the column swollen to appress to the coronal lobes. Please note: After now recognizing the taxonomic significances, I will henceforth pay more close attention to the coronal columns when I work with hoya species. Undoubtedly there will be additions and changes, in some cases, to the above lists and material. There are a few species that seem to fit in more than one category.: e.g. H. kerrii, H. maladora, H. tannaensis, ilagiorum.
