MISSION

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

At Vanier Elementary School, we are committed to fostering lifelong learning in an atmosphere of caring and mutual respect, which encourages personal achievement and development, and promotes a sense of responsibility to society and the world.

We hope that all enjoyed the break and are recharged and ready to return to our final term of 2015-16.

VISION

We accomplished much in the short month of March. Our sincere appreciation goes out to our Gala - Auction committee, and our entire school community, for your support in our school fundraiser on March 5th. Over $20 000 was raised through our collective efforts towards our playscape. It was a wonderful evening! Sincere thanks goes out to all involved.

Visiting the Grade 5 Heritage Fair

Also during March, Literacy-Numeracy Teacher Ms. Darlene Tilley worked with students in Learning, sharing, growing—preparing for several grade levels to help them achieve learning goals. Our Scholastic Monster Book Fair was again a great success, and we thank all our families, volunteers and Ms. Gallant for the future

your incredible organization, hard work and support. Our elementary students attended the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra on March 10th. Character Development continued with our grade three classes presenting a beautiful assembly on March 15th on the character trait of Fairness. Thank you to all who came to view our Grade Five Heritage Fair on March 17. Grade six students attended Sharing Our Cultures at The Rooms on March 22nd. A very special Easter Assembly was led by grade one students on the last day before break. During the month of April, we salute our volunteers. National Volunteer Week, organized by Volunteer Canada, will take place April 10-16. At Vanier, we are reminded daily of the positive impact our many volunteers have on our school and our students. We invite all volunteers who have supported us in so many ways this year to attend a social in your honour on April 13th at 2:45 pm, as we celebrate volunteer week. We look forward to seeing you there! Volunteers are the roots of strong communities. Just like roots are essential for trees to bloom, volunteers are essential for communities to bloom...Even the tiniest volunteer effort leaves a profound and lasting trace in a community, much like tree rings that appear over time. (Volunteer Canada, 2016)

One final note, we ask families to please note our tentative professional development date this month on April 29th. This date is to be confirmed this week. We wish all our families a happy month of April! Happy Spring! Happy learning! Administration and Staff, Vanier Elementary

VANIER BREAKFAST PROGRAM FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE UPDATE We would like to thank corporate sponsors PF Collins, East Coast Mortgage Brokers, and Hunt’s who provided supplies and monetary donations to our Breakfast Program. We appreciate your support of our program.

The Vanier KES Breakfast Program has received multiple monetary donations, supplies, and food items that have helped us reach our monthly goals. Without the support of the many parents, guardians, and family members, our program would not be a success. Thank you ! If you or your company would like to jump on board, please let us know. We will graciously accept any kind donation that you are willing to provide. We will be holding a parent volunteer meeting Thursday, April 14th at 7pm in the Resource Center. New volunteers are always welcome! Please contact Allison Chafe at [email protected] if you would like to help in any way.

Donations of any of the following items are always welcome: Cereal bars (peanut free), plain and multigrain Cheerios, Shreddies, Triscuit Crackers, Premium Plus Whole Wheat Crackers, cheese blocks, cheese strings, and yogurt tubes. Monetary donations are also gratefully accepted and are used to purchase perishable items such as milk, fruit, and vegetables.  Our “Fill the Fridge/Cupboard” is running biweekly with grade levels donating certain food items from the Vanier Food List. These items are based on the guidelines of the Kids Eat Smart Foundation, Newfoundland and Labrador. Thanks to your support, we have had more than 120 breakfast food items donated to our program totalling approximately $800! The dollar value will be matched by Kids Eat Smart and will be used to purchase even more items for our Breakfast Program. Our grade four classes will be invited to participate in our Fill the Cupboard/Fill the Fridge Challenge throughout the week of April 1115. You can follow our progress on the chart in the upstairs foyer. Thank you, Vanier School Community!  Our first Recycling Blitz in aid of the Breakfast Program took place February 6, 2016 with great success. Our next Recycling Blitz will take place Saturday, April 9, 2016 from 10 am to 1 pm at Vanier Elementary Parking Lot. We accept the usual recycling materials; please note we also accept bottles (beer, spirits, wine). Please spread the word in your neighborhood…we hope to see you there!!

ART PIECE REQUEST

VANIER CHESS CLUB NEWS

Our Breakfast Program Committee is kindly requesting an art piece donation from our school community. This piece of art would serve as a centerpiece at the Kids Eat Smart Gala to be held in a few weeks and would represent our school. Our whale and sea stars are symbolic of Vanier, but the committee is certainly open to other possibilities. The centerpiece should be small enough to sit in the centre of a table, be valued at approximately $100, and could include a business card or brochure from the artist acknowledging their kind donation. If any community members know someone who may be able to donate such a piece to this cause, please have them contact [email protected]. Funds raised from the auction of the centerpiece on the night of the gala will go directly to our breakfast club.

Congratulations to Jacob Sheppard who won the Provincial tournament for Grade 2 and will be heading to Saskatchewan to represent NL! Other notable finishes from our players include the following: Riley Griffiths (2nd place); Jacob Brockerville (2nd place); Harrison Hefferton (2nd place). The next tournament takes place on Saturday, April 16 at Mary Queen of Peace School. This is the team tournament, meaning that all Vanier players are on the same team and players typically do not play others from the same school. Winning schools are awarded the team banners that you see around the school. There are individual medals as well. The Vanier Open tournament takes place on May 7th. Tournament information can be found at www.chess.nl.ca For those scheduling summer camps, a Chess Camp takes place in August at MUN. In the past it has been during the third week of August but the date has to be confirmed for this year. Participants learned chess in the morning and then did other activities (such as walks, etc.) in the afternoon.
