Give each student a cracker and have them describe what happens to the cracker in their mouth. Record answers on chart paper. Have students feel their throat as they swallow the cracker. Add the esophagus to the Human Body map. including a label. VIDEO: The Magic School Bus Gets Eaten

Introduce the stomach and stomach acid. Explain that the stomach has two entries, one that takes food into the stomach, and one that pushes the food out of the stomach. The stomach is like a bag that expands to take in food. Stomach acid is a strong liquid that breaks down food even more which is the main part of digestion. Give each student a ziplock bag and a cracker. Have students pour a small amount of water into the bag and close the bag tight. Students tape the “stomach bag” to the Human Body map, and add label.

Introduce the intestines. Explain that the intestines transport the food from the stomach out of the body. This is the last part of the digestive system. Students get a strip of crepe paper and glue it into the Human Body map, and add a label. The esophagus, stomach, and the intestines should all be touching as the Digestive System is one continuous tract. VIDEO: Digestive System Kid’s Health

Complete the “All About the Digestive System” booklet by adding facts and pictures. This book should depict the process of the Digestive System. Summarizing activity for the Digestive System.

Introduce the heart. Explain that the heart is the muscle that forces blood into the body. The heart has 4 chambers and students need to know what each chamber’s function is. VIDEO: Circulatory System Kid’s Health

Students color a real heart (printable) and add it to their Human Body map and label. Discuss the terms veins and arteries and their function in the circulatory system. Add blue and red yarn to the Human Body map to show arteries. Glue the yarn from the heart to the arms, then from the heart to the legs.

This is a lose outline of how my unit went but you can always add more or less depending on your students. This is definitely a spring unit due to the amount of writing and labeling.
