REDUCING COSTS HUMANELY

MARKETS

If you are, or know, a dairy-farmer, or orchardist, or investor, or venture capitalist, who would be interested, in producing milk and eggs, humanely and profitably.

You do not need to get cows pregnant for cows to lactate. And, you can breed 90% female calves, using current technology.

Humane production means freerange poultry and pasture-fed dairy.

Could you please email me: [email protected]

************************************** HUMANE MILK AND EGGS Humane milk and eggs are produced from dairy-cattle and poultry, who are treated as pet cows and hens. No-one gets killed. No-one gets abused. Calves stay with their mothers. Everyone is genuinely free-range. Cows and hens die of old age. COMMERCIALLY VIABLE This is to show that humanely produced milk, using current technology, is commercially viable. As a stand alone business. And, that humanely produced eggs, are commercially viable, when mixed with orcharding, so as to reduce the effective cost of land, water, food. The poultry mow the orchard, eat weeds, fallen fruit, and insects, and produce eggs and dung. Producing eggs while saving time, fossil-fuel, and money, on mowing, herbicides and insecticides. Their dung acts as fertiliser for the orchard and so reduces the costs of fertiliser and waste removal. One does not have to double up on the cost of land for poultry. This is not a precise business plan. But, rather to show heuristically, that humane milk and eggs are commercially viable using current, proven, technology. And, as technology improves, and becomes less expensive, the costeffectiveness of humanely produced milk and eggs, will increase.

HORMONALLY INDUCED LACTATION

So, you have the environmentsustainability, and health markets. As well as the vegetarian and humane markets.

Lactation can be induced, by a 7 day course of 17β-estradiol and progesterone. Milking can begin 2 to 3 weeks later.

PROFITABILITY

[7 days – compared to 20 years on the contraceptive pill for women.]

But, with no-kill, you could eventually have, 3 to 4 times as many cattle. And, 5 times as many hens.

Hormonally induced lactation is a proven, cost-effective technology. Hormonally induced lactation reduces costs, and culling, by even inducing barren cows into lactation. And, reduces the number of calves bred, to the calves needed for replacement, or for herd expansion.

For the first year, even the first few years, costs could be similar.

But, not 3 to 4 or 5, times the costs. Since, off-farm, costs are the same. And, males and retired females, are cheaper to feed, and manage. MILK, YOGHURT, CHEESE With current technologies such as:

SEX-SORTED SEMEN 90% FEMALE CALVES 90% Female Calves, from using sex-sorted semen, means you will not have a lot of unproductive males to look after.

Hormonally induced lactation. Sex-sorted semen with 90% females. Robotic milking. I think that humane dairy could be successful as a stand-alone business. Off farm costs could be the same.

ROBOTIC MILKING Robotic milking enables cows to come into the dairy, to be milked, whenever, and as often as they like. Since some cows come in too often, up to 11 times per day, you can program it to bypass some cows. And, because the cows can be costeffectively milked, more than twice per day, robotic milking increases milk production, by about 10%. Milking more than twice per day, also reduces mastitis, and damage due to overfull udders. HUMANE DAIRIES For examples, of Humane Dairies, please see my Blog. On farm milk costs might double. But, probably not triple. Milk is currently sold from $2.00 to $6.50, for 2 litres, in Supermarkets. At higher prices in Smaller Shops. So the milk could be sold in supermarkets, and smaller shops, at competitive prices – at a profit. One could sell directly to consumers. As well as, value adding, by selling yoghurt and cheese. EGGS I think humane egg production, is commercially viable, using current technology, if it is included with orcharding, so you are effectively getting, free land, and half of the hens' food for free.

HUMANELY PRODUCED EGGS

FUTURE TECHNOLOGIES

I have produced eggs humanely, from my pet hens, but could this be done commercially and profitably?

SEX-SORTING EGGS BEFORE INCUBATION

The main extra expense, is the cost of keeping all poultry, until they die of old age. With no-kill, you could eventually have 5 times as many hens. And, until sex-sorting of eggs, before incubation, technology is available, a similar number of roosters. Resulting in 10 times as many birds, for maybe 50% to 100% more eggs, since older hens do not lay as many eggs per year, as younger hens. COMBINE WITH ORCHARDING TO REDUCE COSTS HUMANELY An orchardist would not have to buy land for the poultry – and, the trees, can provide shelter from rain, wind breaks, and shade for hens. The poultry would mow the orchard, turning weeds, fallen fruit, insects, into eggs and dung. About half the hens' food could come from weeds, fallen fruit, and insects. The rest from concentrated foods, such as wheat, and other seeds. Saving money on food for the hens. While, saving time and money on, mowing, herbicides and insecticides. The hens, dunging in the orchard, also reduce the costs of fertiliser, and waste removal of chicken dung. POULTRY MANAGEMENT Hens let out of their spacious sheds, which allow plenty of natural light, in the morning. To free-range in orchards during the day. [With some guard dogs who will only eat some of their eggs.] SAFE FROM PREDATORS AT NIGHT Scatter some extra concentrated foods, such as wheat and other seeds, in their sheds, 1 hour before dusk, and they will come running in.

The sex of a bird is determined by the egg – not the sperm. So sex-sorted semen cannot be used to prevent male chicks.

MILK DRINKERS AND DAIRY-EATERS ARE HAPPIER, HEALTHIER, AND LIVE LONGER A meta-analyses of 1,063,471 women, showed that the women, who consumed the most dairy food, got 15% less breast cancer. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21442197

INFRA-RED IMAGING OF EGGS

People who drink the most milk, or eat the most dairy products, also have:

Fertilised eggs can be sex-sorted, before incubation, by using infrared imaging. And, so reduce the hatching of male chickens.

13% lower overall death rates; 8% less ischaemic heart disease; 21% fewer strokes; 15% less diabetes;

This has been done experimentally.

than people who consume the least.

But, it is still too expensive for commercial use.

Vegans get the most bone fractures. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17299475

But, it soon could be. Even if it cost $10 per egg – that is $20 to find a male and female. That would add $20 to the cost of a female chicken. And, spread over 500 eggs that would be 4 cents per egg. Or, about 50c per dozen eggs, extra cost of producing eggs humanely. The premium selling price, of genuinely humanely produced eggs, could well cover that extra cost. And, you would save the cost of keeping a male for 10 years. The few males, who did hatch, could be left to free-range in orchards, where they could turn weeds, fallen fruit and insects into manure, for the 10 years or so, chickens live. Humanely produced eggs, with all poultry living a happy life, free-ranging all day in orchards, until they die of old age. They would only be locked in sheds, which allow plenty of natural light, at night for protection from foxes and feral dogs. [Hens do not mind this as they sleep at night.] See my Free Ebook, “Poultry As Pets Hens, Ducks, Bantams, Muscovies, Free-Ranging In Your Garden”, at: https://www.smashwords.com/books/ view/527131
