(a) Describe Kennedy's theory for the design of irrigation channel in alluvial soil. Also discuss the drawbacks of Kennedy's theory. (b) What are the objectives of a distribution system ? Explain in brief the Warabandi system.

(a) Describe various types of canal lining with 5+5 their respective advantages and disadvantages. (b) Design an irrigation channel to supply 30 cumec of water, assuming a silt factor of 1.0, by Lacey's method. 3.

(a) What is meant by river training ? List the 5+5 various objectives of river training.

(b) A discharge of 0.035 cumec is desired to pass through a pipe outlet (i.e. a nonmodular arrangement), given that the available working head for it is 7 cm. Compute the diameter of the pipe. Assume the co-efficient of discharge Cd = 0.5 (a) Discuss in brief the necessity, working, and 5+5 the types of drainage systems used behind canal linings. (b) An adjustable orifice semi-module is to be fitted in a distributary, for the following conditions. Discharge of outlet = 0.40 cumec working head = 0.80 m. F.S.L. of the distributary = 102.0 m. Bed level of the distributary =100.40 m. Design the module. Assume Bt = 15.5 cm. (a) What are non-modular outlets ? Discuss 5+5 each type and explain with the help of suitable sketches. (b) A water course is to take a flow of 0.045 cumec. Design an open flume outlet from the concerned distributary if the full supply depth in the distributary = 0.80 m. ET-536(B)

(a) What is a Groyne ? List the various types of 5+5 Groynes. (b) Determine the discharging capacity of the pipe drop spillway for the following data : H = 2 m, d = 15 cm, f = 0.012, L =4 m, where H is the difference in elevation between the water level at the upstream and downstream ends of the structures, d is the diameter of the pipe, and L is the length of the pipe. (a) Why do weeds need to be removed ? How 5+5 can you control weeds on a water course ? Give some practical examples. (b) A rectangular channel carries water at the rate of 400 litres/sec when bed slope is 1 in 2000. Find the most economical dimensions of the channel if C = 50. 8.

(a) What are the factors affecting the economics 5+5 of a lined channel ? Give a few (at least two) practical examples.

(b) A trapezoidal channel is 10.0 m wide and has a side slope of 1.5 horizontal : 1 vertical. The bed slope is 0.0003. The channel is lined with smooth concrete of n = 0.012. Compute the mean velocity and discharge for a depth of flow of 3.0 m. 9.

(a) What are the various types of falls 5+5 commonly adopted on canals ? Discuss the suitability of each type. (b) A triangular channel with an apex angle of 80° carries a flow of 2 m3/ sec at a depth of 1.2 m. If the bed slope is 0.009, find the roughness co-efficient of the channel.
