IBARMS MYP Breakout Session January 31st, 2014: 1. Round the Horn with how schools are feeling about Next Chapter Changes. Responses were generally good; districts with a lot of top down initiatives were further behind. 2. Karen provided a couple quick easy activities you could do with your staff around the new unit planner (thanks Karen!). Karen discussed a new computer program that let’s folks do the cut and match activity on the computer – Karen will share this program when she follows up with meeting. Karen will also email a clean copy of activity. a. We believe there are133 different ATL indicators’ that fit into the 5 categories. Karen emailed the guide/document earlier. School matrixes needs to show these 133 are covered years 6-10 and how are they building on each other. ATL’s should be part of articulation of entire program and all 8-subject areas. 3. Old Business: from board meeting this a.m. –  IBARMS level representatives is “technically” a year-to-year position. Karen is willing to step aside or continue in the role for 1 more year. Yes it is time consuming, but there have been efforts to manage this for folks and it is very rewarding with a great deal of learning. Karen will send an email to all MYP members next month and ask for bio and a picture if folks are interested – please send any applications to Paul and Jan, then in April this MYP body will vote on your level representative. 

North MS and Palmer HS in district workshop with opportunities for IBARMS members is being set up: o Workshops will be structures much like a program articulation would be – NOT subject specific. o Dates: Feb 21st 4:3--7:30 and Feb 22nd 8-2:30 (roughly), and then April 26th with a 6 hour follow up day. o Fifty slots will be offered to all of IBARMS members. Similar to a symposium, but 15 total hours and cost is $100.00. o Location: Unsure, but believe it will be at one of two schools. o Possible Topics: Assessment, ATL, Global Contexts, International Mindedness, Projects (not positive on topics, but will email this out when confirmed). o Not an official IBO workshop but in-service/CDE relicensure we think will be available – more to come on this as well.

Structure of our IBARMS Meetings – looking for feedback. o Currently we hold 4 ½ day quarterly meetings o Future: Continue with the same structure or or 2 ½ day and 2 full day with PD for us (round tablish?) during the full days.

o o o o

Group present liked the idea of adding PD for coordinators Lots of nodding heads Takes several hours to get here for folks, might as well be a full day Maybe am optional PD/ second half traditional to provide choice

4. Clarification on signing up for round tables: a. We NOW REGISTER on the IBARMS website, just like for Keystone, all goes through Veena and not through level reps anymore. b. This weeks Preparing for program evaluation – only 2 folks signed up – may be cancelled c. Personal Project – 18 folks as of last night – signed up to go. There is a desire for a group break out around the Community Project (We believe Jason Malone is facilitating). d. Expanding MYP – 1 person registered. e. Language Acquisition – April 17th at Lucille Loveland in Erwin – Daniel Gallegos is facilitator. Opening Soon. 5. Keystone Science School Dates: reviewing dates and possibly moving to November to accommodate High School sports schedules. High school folks were in favor of this. Reminder: IBARMS has made a commitment to provide schools with $150.00 towards student’s registration fees– how you choose to use those funds is up to individual sites. 6. By March 1st we need to submit conference topics for 2015: please email topic requests to Karen. (WL – Chinese, embedding Design again) 7. We will need to train all 8 subject areas plus HOS/Coordinator in a category 1 or category 2 – category 3 will NOT count. You have time to do this. a. Embedding Design; told recently that we could NO LONGER “team teach”, teacher where Design is being embedded would have to be cross-trained at official IB Trainings. **Wait to hear more. b. Could we coordinate IBA official district training around embedding Design. Karen will look into this. c. As a group we have never heard that teachers MUST attend category 1 prior to attending category 2. Candidate schools HOWEVER attend the 1 -day Launching the MYP and this gives staff category 1 credit. If they have not received a 1-day then they need to go to category 1 until they have received either the 10-day or attended a 1-day. d. If attending “regional” workshops – be VERY careful that the workshop leaders have all been “up-skilled”. If you have any doubt or questions email Sean Reed Parsons. 8. Karen shared another activity around inquiry questions that we could use with our staff. Spend 8 minutes to process. Karen will send this out as well.

Choose factual/conceptual/or debatable and tweak them. De-briefed a couple of them. Share out 1 of them: a. ?: 1stt group question: “Are there any benefits…yes or no question so needed to be revised i. What is the definition of de-forestation ii. Are there any benefits to deforestation? iii. Defend the benefits of… *2nd group: Impressionist Art Question -thought okay factual question *3rd group: A lot were factual and yes and no in nature. What are the implications of deforestation in the rain forest? To what extent are the USDA nutritional recommendations represented in this diet? 4th group : Revised “what is nonfiction?” to “what are the characteristics of nonfiction?” Factual questions allow for some great content knowledge conversations. 5th group: Wanting more “process” questions. These questions really need to be planned ahead of time for teachers to be able to use them effectively. Could also be an avenue for differentiation? **(Request for copies of Iqbal for a whole school book read at McAuliff International School.. group thought Lesher and Lincoln probably have sets of these. Also, next year McAuliff is adding 8th grade and will be looking for Language Acquisition, Science and Mathematics teachers if folks know of folks interested. **Future request: Discuss more on the Affective ATL and how do we plan, teach, and assess for things that are sort of “life events” for this. Also, there is an ATL book published by IBO that was helpful.
