IBM Research Africa Visiting Scientist Fellowship in Johannesburg 2015 At IBM Research, we have a longstanding and strong commitment to encourage and mentor the next generation of top research talents. Every year our research labs around the world host many visiting academics, scientists and students in the belief that it takes broad collaboration of the brightest minds to create innovations that make the world work better. With the IBM Research Africa Fellowship initiative, we want to reach out to outstanding young research talent in South Africa. We are inviting those who are close to completing their PhDs and wish to continue cutting edge research, as well as existing Post Doctoral Scientists who wish to add to their body of knowledge to apply for a fellowship at the IBM Research Laboratory Africa - South Africa in 2015 and to take this opportunity to work at a world-class industrial IT research centre. The IBM Research – Africa Lab in Johannesburg is currently searching for post-doctoral research candidates. We collaborate with leading research institutes, universities, and industry to perform scientific research and develop novel technologies that tackle pressing societal and business challenges. We are looking for talented scientists to lead a series of projects in data intensive research areas such as healthcare, digital urban renewal, mining, agriculture, and radio astronomy. The design of the fellowship will keep your efforts to a minimum. There are only two simple steps. First, please publicise the initiative using this letter. Second, you will need to receive the candidates’ applications and forward those of suitable candidates to the local IBM University Relations representative ([email protected]), together with a letter of recommendation by 30 August 2015. Your letter of recommendation should state your personal view why the particular applicant is a strong candidate for this fellowship. Besides technical skills and talent, we would appreciate it if you also address the applicant's creativity, perseverance, teamwork, and enthusiasm about his or her field. The following are the main responsibilities required of the applicant.    

Performing complex data analysis, develop algorithms, and visualise large data sets Executing decision analytics / insight projects as part of a multi-disciplinary team Collaborating with application architects, developers, and data scientists Initiating, defining, managing, and executing original and impactful projects

Specific requirements include:      

Experience in roles such as data analytics , visualisation for large complex datasets; experience with dynamic and static visualisation tools Experience in machine learning, analytics algorithms, and predictive modeling using various data sources (text, weather, geo-spatial, spatio-temporal, demographics and social) Experience in large scale data linking and architecture, data mining, information retrieval, recommender and filtering systems Experience with big data platforms, various cloud platforms and distributed systems, analytics tools, database systems, and programming languages Experience with analysis and visualisation of large data sets using statistical software (R, S-Plus, Matlab or similar) and databases (SQL) Background in numerical analysis; probability theory; stochastic processes; optimization; network analysis

A PhD in a quantitative discipline such as Computer Science, Engineering, Physics or Mathematics will be an advantage. In keeping with IBM's traditionally close links to universities, we are seeking the brightest minds and hottest IT topics for a fellowship at IBM Research Africa - South Africa. Applicants must be nominated by a faculty member. A recommendation letter from your faculty member is mandatory. Applicants need to submit their current CV and a short proposal (1–2 pages). The proposal (1–2 pages) should address the following points:   

Based on your expertise and interests, as an intern at IBM Research, what are the big challenges that you would like to tackle? What do you personally want to achieve? What type of impact would you like to have on IBM Research?

This is not a quiz — there are no right or wrong answers. We encourage you to express your own views and to propose creative and innovative ideas that could be turned into concrete projects. You should inform yourself about the research areas at IBM Research Africa – South Africa, to understand what kind of projects might be possible to work on. However, we do not require that you focus on those areas when writing your position paper. Your CV and proposal have to be in English. Please submit them in PDF format.

How to apply Submit your CV and proposal (in PDF format) to your nominating professor by 30 August 2015. The IBM University Relations manager and a committee of IBM technical experts will review the nominations received from the professors, from which they will select the best candidates at their discretion. You will be notified at the middle of September 2015 whether or not you have been successful. The successful applicant will start their fellowship in 2015 on a mutually agreed date. Please don't forget to propose possible dates and duration (12 months) for your fellowship in your CV. Deadline for submissions is 30 August 2015.
