Systems Cropping Agronomist (Conservation agriculture in wheat-based systems) Internationally Recruited Staff
Reports to: SIRPSP Director (Principal/Senior Agronomist once appointed). Location: Rabat, Morocco

Main purpose of the position: To work within a multidisciplinary team developing, leading and implementing conservation agriculture (CA) and agronomic research projects throughout Central and West Asia and North Africa (CWANA) Region. To develop innovative solutions for adapting CA and improved agronomic practices to rainfed and irrigated croplivestock production systems of smallholder farmers in the dry areas. Main responsibilities Undertake integrated cropping systems research on rainfed and irrigated wheatlegume-livestock production systems as means of intensifying and increasing farm gate outputs. Identify, evaluate, and implement CA approaches and innovative agronomic practices that could be adaptable to smallholder farmers in the CWANA region. Develop, coordinate and implement research projects on conservation agriculture in integrated crop-livestock projects in CWANA, in conjunction with the national agricultural research system (NARS) partners. Evaluate wheat germplasm for resource-use efficiency and zero-till/residue retention in coordination with the wheat breeding program and NARS partners. Organize and participate in training activities in cooperation with other programs in ICARDA, NARS partners, and advanced research institutions. Publish in ISI refereed journals with focus on conservation agriculture and dryland cropping systems. Represent ICARDA in regional and international fora. Education, qualifications and experience A PhD degree in agronomy, soils, crops, or related field. A minimum of 10 to 14 years’ experience in international centres or organizations outside the home country. Excellent understanding of CA principles, and practical experience in conducting CA research trials. Background in crop, soil, weed and water management in the context of conservation agriculture. Capacity to plan, design and implement field scale research and demonstration programs. IEA# 512 UBW# 100096

Computer skills, with an understanding of statistical design and analysis of field research trials. Experience with development of farm machinery for conservation agriculture would be an asset. Fluency in spoken and written English. Additional languages that would be an advantage are French and/or Arabic Work experience in developing countries is desirable. Ability to work in a team and supervise technical staff.
Terms of appointment, salary and benefits This is an international recruited position. ICARDA offers an attractive remuneration package, including a competitive salary, housing allowance, contribution towards relocation costs, home leave provisions, medical and life insurance, and noncontributory retirement plan. The successful candidate will be appointed on a three-year contract, confirmation of which will be subject to a probationary period of 12 months. Subject to satisfactory performance the contract will be renewed by additional two years to cover the full project duration.
