I will be graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in May 2017, and taking the NCLEX on June 2nd, 2017. My grandmother had cancer, and helping my mother care for her as a teenager led to my desire to become a nurse. My grandma died with dignity and I can relate to patients and families who are dealing with cancer and understand how difficult it can be. During nursing school I had the opportunity to be taught by an oncology nurse at Highlands Oncology Group and observed administering chemotherapy to patients with various types of malignancy and learned the importance of compassionate bedside manner. This experience further solidified my desire to pursue nursing positions in oncology with plans to achieve a certification as an Oncology Certified Nurse in the future. My recent clinical rotations at Horizon Hospital gave me experience with a diverse patient population, and a respect for cultural differences. The emphasis on patient satisfaction impressed me. I was pleased that my preceptor, Karen S., RN, and my Clinical Instructor Deidre Y., RN, both gave me high evaluations on my communication skills with patients and coworkers and offered to serve as professional references for me. In addition to my nursing skills, I’ve developed strong leadership skills. As president of the Arkansas Chapter of the National Student Nurses’ Association, I led a team that initiated a very successful Health Education Booth for Fayetteville community members, students, and staff. The booth was featured in the Arkansas Traveler, and will be carried on by future nursing classes. I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you in person to further discuss my qualifications.
