Where Did My Family Come From? Immigration Project Complied by Stephanie Moorman http://teachinginroom6.blogspot.com
In class, we have been learning about the reasons people come to America to live. Whether they came here for a better education, to visit family, find a job, or simply for a better life, each Immigrant has a story to tell. In this project, you will be learning about the reasons your family came to America. You must complete the following: 1. Interview a family member about why they came to America. 2. Research the culture and history of their country of origin. 3. Create a float depicting that persons journey from one country to the next.
To begin, speak to your parents about the people in your family who came from another country and immigrated to America. Choose ONE of those people to become the focus of your project. If that person is living and you are able to talk to him or her, sit down with him or her and ask them questions about why they immigrated to the United States, using the interview questions we brainstormed in class. If you are unable to speak to that person directly, talk to someone in your family who knows the story behind why your ancestor immigrated. This is due ______________. Next, research the history and culture of the country your family immigrated from. Make sure you include all of the required information on the attached form. This is due ________________. Finally, create a "parade float" (see attached directions) depicting the journey your family member took from one country to the United States. You may include actual pictures, artifacts from the two countries, drawings, 3-D objects or anything that "tells the story" of how that person came to America. This is due _______________.
Parade Float Students will design a "parade float" based on the journey one family member took when he or she immigrated from their home country to the United States. They will decorate a box to show that story and it will be like a float in a parade.
Materials needed by each student: empty shoe box (or other box) construction paper or gift wrap paper scissors crayons pencil paper miscellaneous natural materials (rocks, sand, evergreen clippings, etc., as needed) other miscellaneous materials (craft sticks, photos, artifacts from country etc., as needed)
Procedure: Decorate an upside down box to show the journey that your family member took when immigrating from their home country to the United States. The students need to visualize this as a "float" in a parade—an immigration parade. Each project will be graded according to the following instructions and requirements: 1. All advertisement on the box should be covered. 2. The title of the float should be neatly displayed on one side of the "float". The title should be creative but informative. The people watching the parade should be able to tell where the person immigrated from. This title should be written in correctly form with the proper words capitalized. 3. One paragraph, describing the person, where they came from and why, should be included on the other side of the float. 4. The student's name should be written neatly on the back of the "float". 5. Natural materials. student-made decorations, or family pictures/artifacts should be used to build the scene on the box, not purchased materials like little cars, Indians, etc. (if you have these at home and wish to use them, please OK it with me first) 6. All drawings and writing must be neat, clear, colorful, and appealing to the eye. Ideas of things you MAY want to include on you float: * Flags of both countries * The mode of transportation your ancestor used * Pictures that show both countries * Pictures of your ancestor in both countries * Items that you think really show your ancestor's country * Dolls dressed like your ancestor
