Information to the Public: Visa Section of the German Embassy Lilongwe permanently closes on 30.03.2012 Lilongwe, 14.03.2012 The Consular Section of the German Embassy in Lilongwe will permanently close on 30.03.2012. The German Embassy will no longer issue visas from that date onward. Please note the following important changes for the visa application procedures. 1) Long-term visas: Applications for long-term visas to Germany (for stays over 3 months in order to study or work in Germany or to permanently move to Germany with a German family member) will be processed at the German Embassy in Lusaka / Zambia. 2) Short-term visas ("Schengen Visas"): The German Embassy will no longer process any Schengen Visa applications and will also cease to represent the Schengen partners Austria, Belgium, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal and Spain. According to Article 5 of "Regulation (EC) No 810/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 July 2009 establishing a Community Code on Visas (Visa Code)", the Member State competent for examining and deciding on an application for a "Schengen Visa" is: (a) the State whose territory constitutes the sole destination of the visit(s); (b) if the visit includes more than one destination, the Member State whose territory constitutes the main destination of the visit(s) in terms of the length or purpose of stay; or (c) if no main destination can be determined, the Member State whose external border the applicant intends to cross in order to enter the territory of the Member States. It is vitally important that you understand what country constitutes the main destination of your trip, as visa applications will not be accepted by another country's Embassy if it is not competent by law to accept your application. If the sole or main destination of your trip is Germany: please contact the German Embassy in Lusaka / Zambia. For the other states previously represented by the German Embassy in Lilongwe,

please contact the following diplomatic missions for further information on where to obtain a Schengen visa: Austria Belgium France Greece Hungary Italy Luxembourg The Netherlands Portugal Spain

It is recommended that all applicants check the Embassy's website for changes in opening times, holidays and the current information sheets on visa requirements before travelling to Lusaka. 3) Please note: - Holders of diplomatic passports issued by the Republic of Malawi currently do not need a Schengen Visa for short travels of up to a maximum of 3 months within a 6 months period to Germany, provided that they travel on official government business and that the passport is valid for at least another 3 months after returning to Malawi. The same exception applies to Belgium, Luxemburg and The Netherlands for holders of diplomatic or service passports. Those exceptions do not apply to other Schengen Member States and you will need a visa! - According to Article 9 of the Visa Code, applications can not be filed more than three months before the start of the intended visit. This means that before its closure on 31.03.2012 the Visa Section of the German Embassy can only accept applications for travels that start before 30.06.2012. The German Embassy sincerely apologises for the inconvenience these administrative changes might cause to travellers and hopes that there might be a more convenient solution in the near future.
